Resumen. – Situación de la población del Canquén (Cauquén) Colorado (Chloephaga rubidiceps) en Tierra del Fuego y Patagonia continental (Chile y Argentina). – La población del Canquén (Cau- quén) Colorado (Chloephaga rubidiceps) que cría en Tierra del Fuego (Chile y Argentina) y Chile continental e inverna en el sur de Buenos Aires (Argentina) ha sufrido una seria disminución desde los 50s y reciente- mente su tamaño poblacional se calculaba en 300–400 individuos. Durante Diciembre 1999 y Marzo 2000, se realizaron censos y se estudió su distribución durante la cría. Los cauquenes fueron observados casi exclusivamente en vegas (mallines) de la estepa. Para el sector chileno, se utilizó una imagen satelital LANDSAT-7, con el fin de localizar hábitat potenciales para la especie (cubriendo el 90% de estos). En Diciembre 1999, se contaron 768 Cauquenes Colorados (634 adultos, 134 crías de 32 nidadas) y en Marzo 2000, un total de 793 individuos (adultos y juveniles). El tamaño poblacional post-reproductivo se calculó en 900 individuos, siendo esta una estimación mínima, ya que, existen áreas potenciales aún no estudiadas. Los grupos familiares se concentraron en pocos sitios en Chile continental, los que se caracterizaron por la presencia de humedales que ofrecían protección contra la predación de zorros. Este tipo de hábitat prácti- camente no existe en Tierra del Fuego, donde los cauquenes probablemente no nidifican por falta de sitios reproductivos seguros. La cría exitosa estuvo limitada a escasos sectores, donde el éxito reproductivo es altamente susceptible a las perturbaciones locales. Es imperativo implementar acciones concretas de con- servación para estos “sitios claves”. La introducción del zorro gris patagónico (Dusicyon griseus) en Tierra del Fuego aparece como el principal factor responsable de la disminución y escasa recuperación poblacio- nal. El éxito en la recuperación de esta especie dependerá a largo plazo de la implementación de medidas para incrementar las oportunidades de reproducción en Tierra del Fuego y el continente, mediante la inun- dación temporal de vegas para reducir el acceso de los zorros a las áreas de nidificación. Abstract. – The population of the Ruddy-headed Goose (Chloephaga rubidiceps) which breeds in Tierra del Fuego (Chile and Argentina) and nearby mainland Chile and winters in the southern Buenos Aires prov- ince in Argentina has seriously declined since the 1950s. Recently, the population was estimated at 300–400 individuals. Ruddy-headed Geese were almost exclusively associated with wet marshes (“vegas”) in the steppe zone. A LANDSAT-7 satellite scene covering the Chilean breeding range was used to locate potential habitats used by the geese. More than 90% of potential areas were surveyed. During December 1999–January 2000, 768 geese (634 adults and 134 young in 32 broods) were counted, and during March 2000, 793 adults and juveniles. The post-breeding population size was estimated at 900 individuals, which was a minimum because potential areas north of the known breeding range remained unsurveyed. Family groups were concentrated in few areas in mainland Chile. Brood-rearing sites were characterized by swamps and/or open water offering retreat in case of predation attempts by foxes. Such habitats are generally lacking in Tierra del Fuego. In Tierra del Fuego, the geese probably refrain from nesting due to lack of predator-free breeding habitat. Successful reproduction is restricted to few areas making productivity highly sensitive to local perturbations. The effective protection of the areas of high breeding success is imperative. The introduction of the grey fox (Dusicyon griseus) to Tierra del Fuego seems to be the major factor causing the decline and subsequent lack of recovery of the population. In the longer-term, the restoration of the population will require improved opportunities for breeding in Tierra del Fuego, most realistically achieved by reducing fox access to nesting and brood-rearing areas by tempo- rary flooding of vegas. Grimaltc and Jon Øyvind Odland a The EMASAR study is the first study to describe the body burden of OCs in Argentinian women after delivery. In total, 698 maternal serum samples from Salta (n ¼ 498) and Ushuaia (n ¼ 200) were collected in 2011–2012 and analyzed for a total of 7 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 12 pesticide-related compounds. Only 11 of the compounds had detection rates above 60% in one or both places. Compared with Ushuaian women, those from Salta exhibited higher lipid-adjusted concentrations of p,p0-DDE, p,p0-DDT, b-HCH, and PCB 118 (p # 0.003), with no differences in concentrations of PCB 153 and 138. Age was generally associated positively with the body burden of nearly all OCs and parity negatively so, with p,p0-DDD, o,p0-DDT, and o,p0-DDD residues and a-HCH in Ushuaia being the exceptions.

DEVELOPMENT OF A METHODOLOGY FOR THE ACCOUNT OF TOU- RIST ASSETS ALONG TRAILS IN NATURAL AREAS A methodology for the account of tourist assets along trails allows inventorying a series of components and aspects of the landscape to make clear the process and models for space planning. This methodology is called Re.Je.Sen. (this abbreviation accounts for its Spanish name) and in this paper it is particularly applied to a mountainous area in the south of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. A new version of the methodology by Borla (1995; 1998; 1999) modified by Salemme et. al., 1999 was designed to the account of tourist assets along trails. It takes a tran- sect —the trail or path— considering all the components which can be reachable by the observer’s view, understanding the scenery as a whole. The transect is divided into sma- ller units —sectors— allowing a smaller-scale analysis. The division is based on a set of indicators —geographical, biological, cultural—. Each split is marked by a node, a set of fixed points along the trail where the hiker makes a stop because of different reasons: a panoramic viewpoint, a peculiar non-mobile component, a spot where he meets other hikers, inspires a stop for a rest or a snack.

    HABITAT SELECTION BY WATERFOWL OF ARGENTINE ISLA GRANDE MILTON W. WELLER Isla Grande is the main island of the archipelago at the tip of South Amer- ica known as Tierra de1 Fuego. Current knowledge of the birds of Isla Grande has been ably summarized by Humphrey et al. (1970). As part of a study of austral waterfowl, I spent the period from 10 January to 9 Feb- ruary 1972 at three locations on Isla Grande. I recorded 84 of 108 bird spe- cies recorded by Humphrey et al. (op. cit.), including 15 of the 17 known species of waterfowl. The purpose of this paper is to discuss habitat selec- tion of Isla Grande waterfowl. Observations are also presented on their pa- rental care, brood sizes and reproductive behavior. Data on stage of the reproductive cycle were gathered by age classification of broods according to the system described by Taber (1969:330) : Class I = downy young; II = partly down and partly contour feathers; III = full juvenal body plum- age but not yet flying. Observations spanned two major study areas, the southern mountainous beech forest along the Beagle Channel and the open steppe zone of northern Isla Grande. Nineteen days were spent at Estancia Harberton on the Beagle Channel, four days from Ushuaia west to Lapataia, and nine days at Estancia Viamonte and the region west and north of Rio Grande (Fig. 1). STUDY AREAS Estancia Harberton is along the Beagle Channel in an area of shoreline highly dis- sected with estuaries, bays and offshore islands. The terrain is rolling at sea level, rising in a series of hills to mountains of nearly 915 m.

    Climate Change and Marine Biology in Southern Patagonia and Antarctica ENVI3005 (3 Credits / 45 hours) SIT Study Abroad Program: Argentina: People, Environment, and Climate Change in Patagonia and Antarctica PLEASE NOTE: This syllabus is representative of a typical term. Because courses develop and change over time to take advantage of unique learning opportunities, actual course content varies from semester to semester. Course Description This course focuses on the various ways in which Southern Patagonia and Antarctica’s biodiversity, more specifically their marine biology, are impacted by climate change. In this course students will examine the natural and dynamic components of the Beagle Channel, the Southern Ocean and Antarctica and studies the coastal and marine biology of the region. The course includes site visits to a range of ecological sites chosen to represent Southern Patagonia and Antarctica’s exceptionally unique biodiversity. Through the lens of climate change, students will be exposed to how the region’s biodiversity reflect geological, evolutionary, and biogeographical events to achieve greater understanding of the impact of climate change and other environmental dynamics. This course runs concurrent with the thematic seminar Socio-ecological Dynamics and Conservation in Southern Patagonia and Antarctica and with the Environmental Research Methods and Ethics seminar. Classes with professors and researchers are also imparted during the program excursions/expedition. There are several day excursions which include academic activities to the Tierra del Fuego National Park, Almanza-Estancia Haberton and in the Beagle Channel. There is an excursion from Ushuaia, across the Beagle Channel to Port Williams, Chile, which is located in the Cape of Horns Biosphere Reserve as well as an excursion to Cabo San Pablo and Río Grande.
