BSL Students to Participate in Leading Global MBA Competition

Lausanne, , February 27, 2014 – Next month, BSL MBA students will participate in a case study competition celebrating innovation at the intersection of corporate profitability and social, environmental and ethical issues.

In the first round, two BSL teams including students from Brazil, Colombia, France, Greece, Switzerland, and the USA, will enter the competition and strive toward the campus winner prize. In last year’s edition, the BSL team placed in the Top 10 and earned an honorable mention in the Aspen Institute’s 2013 Business & Society International MBA Case Competition.

BSL is one of 25 leading business schools chosen to engage in the Aspen Institute’s 2014 Business & Society International MBA Case Competition. Students at these institutions will analyze a brand new case study – co-authored by the Yale School of and Tecnológico de Monterrey – and give deep thought to the potentially positive role that a well-managed business can have in society.

“All too often, we hear about the damage done by the private sector,” said Nancy McGaw, Director of the Aspen Institute’s Center for Business Education. “The fact is that there are many innovative leaders in business who are leveraging the tools of business to improve our world. This competition, now in its fifth year, helps students acquire the skills and perspectives these leaders possess. It gives students a chance to practice making the kinds of decisions that drive business success and produce lasting social benefits.”

Over the course of an intense three days, students will tackle a complex, real-life business decision being undertaken by a company in transition based outside of the United States. Separate competitions at each of the 25 partnering schools will determine first place campus winners, whose work will be reviewed by a panel of academic judges to determine five honorable mentions and five finalist teams. Finalists will be flown to New York City, where they will present to a panel of corporate judges and social sector thought leaders, as well as join an invitation-only reception generously hosted by BNY Mellon. All finalist teams will receive prize money, with the first place team receiving $15,000 and $1,000 to donate to a charity of their choice.
