MIN. BID JANUARY RARE SOUL AUCTION & A EARL JACKSON SOUL SELF SATISFACTION ABC 11142 WD VG++ 500 After all these years, Jackson is still a mystery man, a singer called Larry Marks recorded the flipside ‘Looking Thru The Eyes Of Love’, but it’s a different version and we are fairly sure its not him. Whatever the truth, this is mighty, mighty Northern Soul from the pen, producing and arranging skills of the legendary Johnny Pate. Just one small mark on this one, other than that, a minter! B LIFE TELL ME WHY REPRISE 1185 WD M- 150 It’s a while since we had an original copy of this, one of the first modern spins on the scene and virtually unobtainable even as a new 1974, release. Quite easy to tell the original from the bootie – the original is truly stereo/mono on each side whereas the boot says such but is actually, mono both sides. You’ll get this in an original sleeve; don’t you just hate the pretentious term “birth-sleeve” as used by a certain crazed East Midlands record dealer? C MARY LOU WILLIAMS YOU KNOW BABY MARY 1976 M- 400 AND GROUP Featuring the vocals of Leon Thomas who had a few good 45s to his name on Flying Dutchman, Don King and Now Sound, this must be his first recording and its solid sixties all the way. Loads of mileage in this rarity for an enterprising deejay. D CHARLES MINTZ RUNNING BACK UPLOOK 42671 M- 1500 Now here’s a rare one, the superior version of the song also done by Delegates Of Soul. And only the second copy we’ve ever had in the 20 years we’ve known about it. Look around the internet – it just doesn’t come up for sale. E JOHNNY SAYLES I CAN’T GET ENOUGH ST LAWRENCE M- 200 1024 D Surely one of the greatest non-hit soul records ever made? Even in its native Chicago, it got nowhere. Can you imagine creating a titan such as this and no-one being interested? But then, collectors alert, this is the format to have it in – the original Chicago vinyl but the rare promo copy – and original mint condition too! F JAMES COLE REST AND DRESS SPECTRA 8032 VG++ 250 Recently covered up as Bobby Rich and proof that original vinyl discoveries from the late sixties can still crop up. Its produced by Robert Staunton, presumably the same guy that wrote for Motown as well as numerous other soul acts from the East Coast to the West. He also was a member of the Motown one-off group The Hit Pack. G THE SUPERLATIVES I STILL LOVE YOU UPTITE 250 M- 150 So many calls when we ever set-sale this dancefloor wonder but surely the yellow label separates it from the various formats, legal, semi-legal, illegal, which are all sky blue? I don’t think this is the Detroit group, rather a one-ff Paul Kyser situation. Producer Hal Wess had only a minor track record with soul, but he also produced The Shalimars ‘Stop And Take A Look At Yourself’, so he certainly knew how to do it! H JIMMY McFARLAND LONELY LOVER RPR 108 WD M- 250 Much to our surprise this copy is datelined ‘1969’ which is a few years after Marvin Gaye’s original, but unissued-at-the-time, version: Wonder how the producers, at that time, got to hear/know about the song? McFarland, in the Northern Soul tradition, is unknown, but he does a fine job that’s for sure. I LARRY LASTER THAT’S JUST WHAT YOU DUO VIRGO 100 M- 200 DID Known for his ‘Go For Yourself’ on Loma, in the 1980s Stafford era this mid-tempo gem turned up and got big spins. It remains much rarer than his excellent Loma recording; known later as the Reverend Larry Laster, the two above 45s would appear to be his only secular recordings. J THE BELL BOYS I DON’T WANT TO LOSE JAMAR 31968729 M- 200 YOU This cover of the Jackie Wilson record went huge at the Casino through ‘76/’77, it has all the qualities of a Carolinas attempt at the song but is actually an Ohio recording which won’t turn up in the pristine condition offered here very frequently at all. RICHARD SEARLING BOOK “SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT” FULL COLOUR SOFTBACK EDITION. Over 250 pages detailing the records that made him a Northern Soul legend. £29.99 (inc. UK post) Call / Email for international postal rates. SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 CHUCK JACKSON & BABY TAKE ME WAND 181 M- 15 MAXINE BROWN Great duet, same backing track as Tina Britt ‘You’re Absolutely Right’. 2 JIMMY HUGHES I’M GETTING BETTER FAME 6404 M- 10 Version of the Ed Bruce tune, with superior vocals. 3 DON COVAY TRAVELIN’ IN HEAVY PHILADELPHIA M- 10 TRAFFIC INTERNATIONAL 3602 Tremendous seventies dancer, was overlooked at the time and still is to this day. 4 JOE SIMON WHEN SOUND STAGE 7- M- 15 2667 Lovely (rare?) white promos of this excellent sixties dancer played at Stafford. 5 LITTLE CARL BAD FOR EACH OTHER BACK BEAT 603 M- 15 CARLTON Another overlooked gem from Little Carl which sees another Detroit recording end up on the famed Texas label. 6 THE HOLIDAYS WATCH OUT GIRL GOLDEN WORLD 47 M- 15 Incredible piece of Detroit music, often-overlooked because it ain’t ultra-rare. 7 JACKIE WILSON I’VE LOST YOU BRUNSWICK 55321 M- 10 One of the many gems from the J. Wilson archive – and as good as any of them. 8 GENE CHANDLER and FROM THE TEACHER TO BRUNSWICK 55387 M- 15 BARBARA ACKLIN THE PREACHER Twisted Wheel-era gem has stood the test of time. 9 LITTLE WILLIE JOHN (I NEED) SOMEONE / HOME KENT SELECT 011 M- 10 AT LAST The story of Little Willie John’s unissued 1966 album is astounding – as are these two great tracks extracted from the Kent CD. 10 BEN E KING GETTIN’ TO ME KENT SELECT 046 M- 10 This is the side known to most- and its good but it’s put in the shade by the previously unissued Marvellos stormer ‘I Need You’, on the flipside. • Reproductive Technologies and Surrogacy: a Feminist Perspective
1599 REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGIES AND SURROGACY: A FEMINIST PERSPECTIVE BARBARA KATz ROTHMANt During the "Baby M" case, I found myself caught up in the me- dia circus surrounding the case and spent an amazing amount of time in green rooms with Noel King, the man who had brokered the sur- rogacy contract between Mr. and Mrs. Stern and Mr. and Mrs. White- head. I think I spent more time putting on my makeup for that particular surrogate broker than I did with my husband that year. I found that one of the interesting things that happened was the way that the media used me for something it called balance. The media would have a carefully groomed "surrogate" and her broker on one side and then on the other side, it would usually have a rabbi or a priest or minister, and then me. The little tag that appeared in white letters on the television screen under me sometimes read "author" and sometimes read "sociologist," but usually it read "feminist," and so I was there to be the feminist balance. My family and friends time and again agreed with the viewpoint of the rabbi, the priest, or the minister. Today, I find myself in the same general mode of opposi- tion to this arrangement we call surrogacy, proving the point that surrogacy does, indeed, in every possible way, make for very strange bedfellows. Although I and others who are critical of the development of surrogacy from a feminist perspective may be on the same side of this particular fence as the religious leaders, we are coming from a very different place, and we are going to a very different place.

  • Legendary Chicago Soul Singer Otis Clay Busier Than Ever with New Cd Truth Is and Featured Performance in Acclaimed Documentary Take Me to the River
LEGENDARY CHICAGO SOUL SINGER OTIS CLAY BUSIER THAN EVER WITH NEW CD TRUTH IS AND FEATURED PERFORMANCE IN ACCLAIMED DOCUMENTARY TAKE ME TO THE RIVER Not many soul singers are hotter after nearly a half century of making records and headlining countless shows than in the early stages of their careers, but that’s precisely the case with Otis Clay. The Chicago soul legend retains the supercharged gospel-powered pipes that he unleashed on his 1972 hit “Trying To Live My Life Without You” and countless more R&B classics, and he’s busier than ever in the studio and on the road, bringing his fiery brand of soul to several generations of ardent fans. Otis co-stars in director Martin Shore’s new music documentary Take Me To The River, which showcases a passel of southern soul legends (including Bobby Rush, William Bell, and the late Bobby Bland) combining with a new generation of rappers to illustrate how the region’s indigenous music has changed over the decades. “It’s really a lot of fun. Educational and entertaining, the whole works,” says Clay, whose remake of “Trying To Live My Life Without You,” filmed at Royal Recording Studios (where he cut the original hit with the late producer Willie Mitchell) was done in conjunction with pint- sized rapper P-Nut. “Lo and behold, I wind up with one of the greatest kids you’re gonna find anywhere,” marvels Otis. Then there’s Clay’s new CD Truth Is, where the singer collaborates with a pair of old friends, producer/arranger Tom Tom Washington and songwriter Darryl Carter, in a veritable feast of warm, intimate old school soul.

Biography -- Printable Version Peter Wolf's Historical Biography Written & Researched by Bryan Wiser, and Sheila Warren with Mimi Fox. Born in New York City, Peter grew up in the Bronx during the mid-1950's in a small, three-room apartment where he lived with his parents, older sister, two cats, dog and parakeet. For some time, Peter lived with his grandmother, an actress in New York City's Yiddish Theater. She and Peter had a strong bond, and she affectionately named him "Little Wolf" for his energetic and rambunctious ways. His father was a musician, vaudevillian and singer of light opera. Like Peter did years later, his father left home at age fourteen to join the Schubert Theater Touring Company with which he traveled the country performing light operas such as The Student Prince and Merry Widow. He had his own radio show called The Boy Baritone, which featured new songs from Tin Pan Alley, and was a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale. As a result of such artistic pursuits, Peter's father underwent long periods of unemployment that created a struggle to make financial ends meet. Peter's mother was an elegant and attractive woman who taught inner-city children in the South Bronx for 27 years. A political activist, union organizer and staunch civil rights advocate, she supported racial equality by attending many of the southern "freedom rides" and marches. Peter's older sister was also a teacher as well as a photographer who now works as an advocate for persons with disabilities. She continues her mother's tradition, often marching on Washington to support the rights of the disabled.

OTIS CLAY BIO Born February 11, 1942 in Waxhaw, Miss., Otis Clay grew up in a thoroughly sanctiFied environment. “LiKe most traditional blacK Families, Church was a big part oF my liFe not just the religious aspect but the social, it was the center oF our community. As Kids we imitated what we saw and heard in the church, that was how the singing thing started.” Gospel would remain Otis’ primary Focus after arriving in Chicago during the mid-‘50s, He joined the Golden Jubilaires, then hooKed up with Charles Bridges’ Famous Blue Jay Singers in 1960. “Here we are singing acappella, and we’re singing in elementary schools, high schools, hotels and colleges and things liKe that,” says Clay. “We were Known as variety singers, or we were billed as (perForming) ‘Old Negro Spirituals and Plantation Melodies.” “AFter the Blue Jays, it was the Holy Wonders.
