Legendary Chicago Soul Singer Otis Clay Busier Than Ever with New Cd Truth Is and Featured Performance in Acclaimed Documentary Take Me to the River
LEGENDARY CHICAGO SOUL SINGER OTIS CLAY BUSIER THAN EVER WITH NEW CD TRUTH IS AND FEATURED PERFORMANCE IN ACCLAIMED DOCUMENTARY TAKE ME TO THE RIVER Not many soul singers are hotter after nearly a half century of making records and headlining countless shows than in the early stages of their careers, but that’s precisely the case with Otis Clay. The Chicago soul legend retains the supercharged gospel-powered pipes that he unleashed on his 1972 hit “Trying To Live My Life Without You” and countless more R&B classics, and he’s busier than ever in the studio and on the road, bringing his fiery brand of soul to several generations of ardent fans. Otis co-stars in director Martin Shore’s new music documentary Take Me To The River, which showcases a passel of southern soul legends (including Bobby Rush, William Bell, and the late Bobby Bland) combining with a new generation of rappers to illustrate how the region’s indigenous music has changed over the decades. “It’s really a lot of fun. Educational and entertaining, the whole works,” says Clay, whose remake of “Trying To Live My Life Without You,” filmed at Royal Recording Studios (where he cut the original hit with the late producer Willie Mitchell) was done in conjunction with pint- sized rapper P-Nut. “Lo and behold, I wind up with one of the greatest kids you’re gonna find anywhere,” marvels Otis. Then there’s Clay’s new CD Truth Is, where the singer collaborates with a pair of old friends, producer/arranger Tom Tom Washington and songwriter Darryl Carter, in a veritable feast of warm, intimate old school soul. -

Biography -- Printable Version
Biography -- Printable Version Peter Wolf's Historical Biography Written & Researched by Bryan Wiser, and Sheila Warren with Mimi Fox. Born in New York City, Peter grew up in the Bronx during the mid-1950's in a small, three-room apartment where he lived with his parents, older sister, two cats, dog and parakeet. For some time, Peter lived with his grandmother, an actress in New York City's Yiddish Theater. She and Peter had a strong bond, and she affectionately named him "Little Wolf" for his energetic and rambunctious ways. His father was a musician, vaudevillian and singer of light opera. Like Peter did years later, his father left home at age fourteen to join the Schubert Theater Touring Company with which he traveled the country performing light operas such as The Student Prince and Merry Widow. He had his own radio show called The Boy Baritone, which featured new songs from Tin Pan Alley, and was a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale. As a result of such artistic pursuits, Peter's father underwent long periods of unemployment that created a struggle to make financial ends meet. Peter's mother was an elegant and attractive woman who taught inner-city children in the South Bronx for 27 years. A political activist, union organizer and staunch civil rights advocate, she supported racial equality by attending many of the southern "freedom rides" and marches. Peter's older sister was also a teacher as well as a photographer who now works as an advocate for persons with disabilities. She continues her mother's tradition, often marching on Washington to support the rights of the disabled. -
The Theo Huff – Interview by Mike Stephenson
THEO HUFF INTERVIEW By Mike Stephenson Scott and Howard Scott. All of these people really encouraged me and nurtured me. They would pull me to the side and tell me to try this and that and they would bring ideas that have enhanced my performance. From having a first CD out, called ‘Now Is The Time’ in 2014 I’ve just released my new CD this year which is called ‘The New Beginning’ on T.M.P. Records and it’s a big title for me. I had the privilege to work with a great artist, Marzette Griffith, on the CD and the producer is Paul Richmond, who wrote hits for Tyrone Davis and Willie Clayton. Theo Huff, Chicago, 2016. Photo: Mike Stephenson. It was recorded in South Holland, hicago bluesman Theo Huff has had two CDs Illinois in the South suburbs of Chicago. I have had a couple of singles out : ‘Wet Creleased since 2014 and has now become a Pannies’ from 2013 on P.M.T. Records and ‘Just Enuff Rope’ from regular on the Chicago blues scene as well as 2015 on R.G.H. Records. touring the U.S.A. and Europe. Mike Stephenson I was on Brittney Records owned by Mel Waiters before he talked to him about his career so far. passed but when he passed we still went with the project. Mel also helped me with a couple of songs as well. It motivated me so I was born on the west side of Chicago, Illinois on July 10th much to have such talented people to work with. -

OTIS CLAY BIO Born February 11, 1942 in Waxhaw, Miss., Otis Clay grew up in a thoroughly sanctiFied environment. “LiKe most traditional blacK Families, Church was a big part oF my liFe not just the religious aspect but the social, it was the center oF our community. As Kids we imitated what we saw and heard in the church, that was how the singing thing started.” Gospel would remain Otis’ primary Focus after arriving in Chicago during the mid-‘50s, He joined the Golden Jubilaires, then hooKed up with Charles Bridges’ Famous Blue Jay Singers in 1960. “Here we are singing acappella, and we’re singing in elementary schools, high schools, hotels and colleges and things liKe that,” says Clay. “We were Known as variety singers, or we were billed as (perForming) ‘Old Negro Spirituals and Plantation Melodies.” “AFter the Blue Jays, it was the Holy Wonders. AFter the Holy Wonders, then it was the Pilgrim Harmonizers. AFter the Pilgrim Harmonizers was the Gospel Songbirds, which was a very important group that I was in at that time. And From the Gospel Songbirds, I went to the Sensational Nightingales.” Even as he sang spirituals, Clay cut an unissued R&B session For Columbia with producer Carl Davis. The One-derFul Records deal came about after I leFt Columbia. Cash McCall (Maurice Dollison) who I was in several Gospel groups with, was signed to One-derFul! and he introduced me to the label. It was cool because it was a hip independant label, located on South Michigan Avenue in the heart oF Record Row. -

BLUES NEWS from Your President… Ah, Fall
Blues Society of Central Pennsylvania October-December 2016 http://www.bscpblues.org BLUES NEWS From your President… Ah, fall. or, here in PA, almost winter. Just like not having a real spring, we don’t seem to have a real fall. Just my observation. Anyway, we made it through summer. Lots of music and festivals. BSCP has been a bit more active with shows and events. The Missippi Railroad Picnic, with Lightnin Malcolm, was, in my opinion, a great success. We are partnering with River City Blues Club to bring Southern Avenue in September. This happens to fall on the same date as the Pennsylvania Blues Festival, but it will provide some blues locally for those of us not going to the Poconos. We are also doing a show at Champions in October with the Carolyn Kelly Band from Syracuse, NY with Don Johnson Trio opening. Should be a great show. And… don’t forget the BSCP Christmas party December 4, at the Hummelstown Fire Co. This year, we are having Johnny Rawls. This will be an excellent show. So, plan ahead. Free to members and you can re-up at the door. So, this being the last newsletter of the year, it’s time to thank all the folks who have so selflessly pitched in to help keep BSCP running. Our Board of Directors; without their tireless efforts, we would exist. Remember, we are all volunteers. The only thing we get out of this is the enjoyment and satisfaction of trying to keep the blues alive. Thanks to everyone who pitches in when needed, who help set up and tear down weekly at the jam, who help set up and tear down at the shows, who cook and clean up at the picnics and parties. -
