MIN. BID JANUARY RARE SOUL AUCTION & A EARL JACKSON SOUL SELF SATISFACTION ABC 11142 WD VG++ 500 After all these years, Jackson is still a mystery man, a singer called Larry Marks recorded the flipside ‘Looking Thru The Eyes Of Love’, but it’s a different version and we are fairly sure its not him. Whatever the truth, this is mighty, mighty Northern Soul from the pen, producing and arranging skills of the legendary Johnny Pate. Just one small mark on this one, other than that, a minter! B LIFE TELL ME WHY REPRISE 1185 WD M- 150 It’s a while since we had an original copy of this, one of the first modern spins on the scene and virtually unobtainable even as a new 1974, release. Quite easy to tell the original from the bootie – the original is truly stereo/mono on each side whereas the boot says such but is actually, mono both sides. You’ll get this in an original sleeve; don’t you just hate the pretentious term “birth-sleeve” as used by a certain crazed East Midlands record dealer? C MARY LOU WILLIAMS YOU KNOW BABY MARY 1976 M- 400 AND GROUP Featuring the vocals of Leon Thomas who had a few good 45s to his name on Flying Dutchman, Don King and Now Sound, this must be his first recording and its solid sixties all the way. Loads of mileage in this rarity for an enterprising deejay. D CHARLES MINTZ RUNNING BACK UPLOOK 42671 M- 1500 Now here’s a rare one, the superior version of the song also done by Delegates Of Soul. And only the second copy we’ve ever had in the 20 years we’ve known about it. Look around the internet – it just doesn’t come up for sale. E JOHNNY SAYLES I CAN’T GET ENOUGH ST LAWRENCE M- 200 1024 D Surely one of the greatest non-hit soul records ever made? Even in its native Chicago, it got nowhere. Can you imagine creating a titan such as this and no-one being interested? But then, collectors alert, this is the format to have it in – the original Chicago vinyl but the rare promo copy – and original mint condition too! F JAMES COLE REST AND DRESS SPECTRA 8032 VG++ 250 Recently covered up as Bobby Rich and proof that original vinyl discoveries from the late sixties can still crop up. Its produced by Robert Staunton, presumably the same guy that wrote for Motown as well as numerous other soul acts from the East Coast to the West. He also was a member of the Motown one-off group The Hit Pack. G THE SUPERLATIVES I STILL LOVE YOU UPTITE 250 M- 150 So many calls when we ever set-sale this dancefloor wonder but surely the yellow label separates it from the various formats, legal, semi-legal, illegal, which are all sky blue? I don’t think this is the Detroit group, rather a one-ff Paul Kyser situation. Producer Hal Wess had only a minor track record with soul, but he also produced The Shalimars ‘Stop And Take A Look At Yourself’, so he certainly knew how to do it! H JIMMY McFARLAND LONELY LOVER RPR 108 WD M- 250 Much to our surprise this copy is datelined ‘1969’ which is a few years after Marvin Gaye’s original, but unissued-at-the-time, version: Wonder how the producers, at that time, got to hear/know about the song? McFarland, in the Northern Soul tradition, is unknown, but he does a fine job that’s for sure. I LARRY LASTER THAT’S JUST WHAT YOU DUO VIRGO 100 M- 200 DID Known for his ‘Go For Yourself’ on Loma, in the 1980s Stafford era this mid-tempo gem turned up and got big spins. It remains much rarer than his excellent Loma recording; known later as the Reverend Larry Laster, the two above 45s would appear to be his only secular recordings. J THE BELL BOYS I DON’T WANT TO LOSE JAMAR 31968729 M- 200 YOU This cover of the Jackie Wilson record went huge at the Casino through ‘76/’77, it has all the qualities of a Carolinas attempt at the song but is actually an Ohio recording which won’t turn up in the pristine condition offered here very frequently at all. Wilson archive – and as good as any of them. 8 GENE CHANDLER and FROM THE TEACHER TO BRUNSWICK 55387 M- 15 BARBARA ACKLIN THE PREACHER Twisted Wheel-era gem has stood the test of time. 9 LITTLE WILLIE JOHN (I NEED) SOMEONE / HOME KENT SELECT 011 M- 10 AT LAST The story of Little Willie John’s unissued 1966 album is astounding – as are these two great tracks extracted from the Kent CD. 10 BEN E KING GETTIN’ TO ME KENT SELECT 046 M- 10 This is the side known to most- and its good but it’s put in the shade by the previously unissued Marvellos stormer ‘I Need You’, on the flipside.
