Of Music, Punjabi University Patiala, Pin: 147002. Abstract The Classical music of Kashmir (Sufiana Mousiqui) is an important component of the Kashmiri society and culture. It is a type of mystical music practiced traditionally by professional musicians belonging to different Gharanas of Kashmir. This musical form has been fashioned over the centuries of its development by a synthesis of foreign as well as indigenous elements. It is a type of composed choral music in which five to twelve musicians led by a leader, sing together to the accompaniment of Santoor, Saaz-i-Kashmir, Kashmiri Sehtar and Dokara/Tabla. Instead of raga, Persian Maqams are used. The text of the songs is mystical Sufi poems in Persian and Kashmiri. This musical genre took shape in the 15th century at the time of Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin (1420-1470). Key words:- Sufiana Mousiqui, Origin, Structure, Singing style, performance. Introduction The region of Kashmir is renowned worldwide for its rich and distinct cultural heritage. Fine arts in general and music in particular form an important component of Kashmir’s glorious cultural heritage. Highly popular in India and the larger Persian-speaking world up to the modern times, he inuenced many generations of Persian and Urdu poets in India. Ghani’s forte lies in his remarkable use of language to create poems with multiple layers of meaning. This, along with his versatility in creating delightful metaphors and images, makes him one of the few medieval poets with a striking appeal to the modern reader. MUFTI MUDASIR FAROOQI was born and raised in Srinagar. He has published on literary theory, postmodernism and Indo-Persian poetry. He is senior assistant professor in the Department of English, University of Kashmir. NUSRAT BAZAZ is associate professor in the Department of English, University of Kashmir, where she teaches American poetry and ction. A Note On the Translation Translating poetry is generally understood to be a dicult task. It is also very well known that Kashmiri language is not the only language that Kashmiri writers take recourse to while expressing their literary imagination. Kashmiris have and continue to produce literature in various languages like Sanskrit, Kashmiri, Persian, Urdu, Hindi and now English. This implies that the linguistic interchange which is a characteristic of Kashmiri cultural has greatly benefitted its literary tradition too besides the interchange of communication. Over a long period of time, Kashmiri literary tradition has certainly evolved from different linguistic and non-linguistic influences. With its contemporary English writers coming up on the literary horizon, one can say, Kashmir’s literary expression is undergoing a gradual linguistic shift from Kashmiri to English which is precisely the theme that this particular paper endeavours to explore but not without looking at the various phases of the broader Kashmiri literary tradition. It will also look at how the contemporary literary culture of Kashmir is being influenced by the specific historical contingencies that it is beset with from the last three decades.
