B AR B ARA C HING Happily Ever After in the Marketplace: The Ballads of the Southern Mountains and the Escape from Old Europe Between 1882 and 1898, Harvard English Professor Francis J. Child published The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, a five volume col- lection of ballad lyrics that he believed to pre-date the printing press. While ballad collections had been published before, the scope and pur- ported antiquity of Child’s project captured the public imagination; within a decade, folklorists and amateur folk song collectors excitedly reported finding versions of the ballads in the Appalachians. Many enthused about the ‘purity’ of their discoveries – due to the supposed isolation of the British immigrants from the corrupting influences of modernization. When Englishman Cecil Sharp visited the mountains in search of English ballads, he described the people he encountered as “just English peasant folk [who] do not seem to me to have taken on any distinctive American traits” (cited in Whisnant 116). Even during the mid-century folk revival, Kentuckian Jean Thomas, founder of the American Folk Song Festival, wrote in the liner notes to a 1960 Folk- ways album featuring highlights from the festival that at the close of the Elizabethan era, English, Scotch, and Scotch Irish wearied of the tyranny of their kings and spurred by undaunted courage and love of inde- pendence they braved the perils of uncharted seas to seek freedom in a new world. Some tarried in the colonies but the braver, bolder, more venturesome of spirit pressed deep into the Appalachians bringing with them – hope in their hearts, song on their lips – the song their Anglo-Saxon forbears had gathered from the wander- ing minstrels of Shakespeare’s time. -

The present paper is an attempt to place Mahjoor in the history of Kashmiri poetry and study his outpourings against the form and thematic backgroundprevailing before him,so as to underscore his contributions as aharbinger of a sort of renaissance in twentieth century Kashmiri poetry This paper will also illustration how Mahjoor puffed in a fresh air in Kashmiri poetry while maintaining a middle ground between being an extreme traditional on the one hand,and an outright rebel on the other. Endeavour will also be made to explore how Mahjoor by introducing unprecedented themes and issues like nature, flora and fauna, ordinary day-day aspects, mundane love, local environment, freedom from political, economic and social subjugation etc. not only brought in modernity and a new era in Kashmiri poetrybut also by doing so, expanded its canvas. What is more, unlike earlier poets all these themes were rendered in a language understood alike by the learned and the hoi polloiearning him such titles as “The Poet of Kashmir,” as well as “The Wordsworth of Kashmir”. -

Singh Professor of English University of Lucknow-226007 ______________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: It is an informative paper on the construct, form, and expansion of Ghazal as a poetic form. The origin of the word ‘Ghazal' goes back to the Arabic word ‘Ghazal' meaning ‘deer' in English. The reference finds roots to the act of hunting a deer. When a hunter shoots a deer in a moonlit night in the Arabian desert, the deer getting pierced with the arrow, runs around helplessly in search of water. In this state, the throat makes the sound like "gaz - gaz". A lover, in the same way, pines for his beloved, and feels emotional bleeding; this leads to the making of Ghazal. The paper discusses various aspects of Ghazal. Key Words: Ghazal, Sher, Matla, Takhallus. The Ghazal is a Persian word referring to a form of Persian poetry. It became popular in Urdu literature later. It is, generally speaking, a form of poetic expression describing platonic love. The locale, tone, and content –almost everything around Ghazal find a lover and his unattained love as the central concern. The narrator almost knows it too well that the meeting of the lovers is unattainable, yet they keep striving till the last. This pang and desire emanate into the verses of Ghazal. The complete Ghazal comprise of Shers (couplets); most of the Ghazal has less than fifteen shers, A good Ghazal has approximately five Shers. -

It is a condition in which an author loses the ability to produce new work or experiences a creative slowdown. The problem is more difficult in the context of poetry than prose, as in the latter case authors need not be very concise while expressing their ideas, also the various aspects such as rhyme, poetic meters are not relevant for prose. One of the most effective ways to overcome this writing block for poets can be, to have a prompt system, which would help their imagination and open their minds for new ideas. A prompt system can possibly generate one liner, two liner or full ghazals. The purpose of this work is to give an ode to the Urdu/Hindi poets, and helping them start their next line of poetry, a couplet or a complete ghazal considering various factors like rhymes, refrain, and meters. The result will help aspiring poets to get new ideas and help them overcome writer’s block by auto-generating pieces of poetry using Deep Learning techniques. A concern with creative works like this, especially in the literary context, is to ensure that the output is not plagiarized. -

1 Solomon and Sinatra: The Song of Songs and Romance in the Church Robert Case A Sunday School Class Faith Presbyterian Church Tacoma, Washington 2016 Part 3 There are a multitude of biblical themes expressed by non-believing Jewish songwriters in the American Songbook, but one fine example for our purposes in this class is the theme of: no Sex before marriage “Love and Marriage” In 1955 Jimmy Van Heusen (a Methodist) with Jewish lyricist Sammy Cahn wrote “Love and Marriage” which was introduced (ironically) by Frank Sinatra in the television production of Thornton Wilder's Our Town. It is the biggest hit to ever come out of a television special. In 1956, the song, "Love and Marriage" won the Emmy Award for Best Musical Contribution from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The Cahn inspired clever lyrics euphemistically call “sex” “love” and claim that mom told dad you can’t have sex (“love”) without marriage. The song was used as the theme song for the long-running (1987–97) FOX television sitcom Married... with Children. Additionally, the song has been used in several national commercial campaigns. “Love and marriage, love and marriage, go together like a horse and carriage. This I tell you brother you can't have one without the other. Love and marriage, love and marriage, it's an institute you can't disparage. Ask the local gentry and they will say it's elementary. Try, try, try to separate them it's an illusion Try, try, try, and you will only come to this conclusion. -

The 45 rpm single lists the songwriters as Lennon-McCartney. One of several Beatles songs Paul McCartney owns with Yoko Ono. Starting with the songs recorded for their debut album on February 11, 1963, Lennon and McCartney’s output was attached to their Northern Songs publishing company. Lead Belly and His Legacy of Southern Song A Smithsonian Folkways Unit of Lessons Designed by: Patricia Shehan Campbell and Bethany Grant-Rodriguez University of Washington Summary: This unit of four stand-alone or progressive lessons celebrates Lead Belly, a Louisiana-born songster who remembered, invented, and passed on a legacy of songs that opens ears and minds to the world of the American south in the late nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century. The ballads, blues, work songs, and singing games in these lessons celebrate an African American sensibility that can be enjoyed in school settings by listening and participatory singing and playing. With such musical engagement can come a deeper understanding of the life, times, and place of Lead Belly and his early years on the plantation, his consciousness of the daily grind of manual labor, and his later experiences as a conveyor of southern song on radio and in on-stage concerts, clubs, and classrooms. For children and youth, the complexities of Lead Belly’s life and times are caught up in these songs. His troubled years landed him in prison, where he learned songs from his inmates in Louisiana and Texas, when he worked on a chain gang until his time was served. (The reasons for his incarceration may not make for classroom-appropriate discussion, although the songs he acquired there became standard repertoire for him.) They lead to an exploration of the U.S. South in the post-Civil War period and the Jim Crow years, in the rural and remote places where sharecropping was common and where racial inequities were continued long past official declarations of freedom.
