Vik was also frustrated with fre- quent closures of the gym at peak Vin..:,,.. hours. "After looking at all of the work that the fitness club did last year as well as the Students' Association's continued efforts this year, I came to the conclusion that the college doesn't care about students and proactive changes," Vik said in a statement released Nov. 15. "I was so frustrated by this situ- ation I went and spent over $300 on a private gym membership. Unless there are major changes I doubt I'll ever work out at Red River again." The RRC Fitness Club was formed in 2000 by current SA VP of Finance David Lyman and hit a peak membership level of 150 students. The purpose of the club was to raise money for improvements to the gym in the form of new equipment and heavier dumb bells. According to Lyman, who is acting Vice President of the club and currently looking for a new president, the club has some $400 in funds raised last year and through a Pizza Wednesday that took place earlier this year. The club wanted to see a room currently used for fitness appraisals turned into more space for free weights and other equip- ment. The appraisals are done only twice monthly according to a pro- posal submitted to Health and Recreation Services by the SA. "We had the money, we want- ed to spend it by donating it to the gym for new equipment that we wanted, and there just wasn't room," says Lyman. "The money is just sitting in our account, wait- ing for someone to use it." • Metric Ambiguity and Flow in Rap Music: a Corpus-Assisted Study of Outkast’S “Mainstream” (1996)
Metric Ambiguity and Flow in Rap Music: A Corpus-Assisted Study of Outkast’s “Mainstream” (1996) MITCHELL OHRINER[1] University of Denver ABSTRACT: Recent years have seen the rise of musical corpus studies, primarily detailing harmonic tendencies of tonal music. This article extends this scholarship by addressing a new genre (rap music) and a new parameter of focus (rhythm). More specifically, I use corpus methods to investigate the relation between metric ambivalence in the instrumental parts of a rap track (i.e., the beat) and an emcee’s rap delivery (i.e., the flow). Unlike virtually every other rap track, the instrumental tracks of Outkast’s “Mainstream” (1996) simultaneously afford hearing both a four-beat and a three-beat metric cycle. Because three-beat durations between rhymes, phrase endings, and reiterated rhythmic patterns are rare in rap music, an abundance of them within a verse of “Mainstream” suggests that an emcee highlights the three-beat cycle, especially if that emcee is not prone to such durations more generally. Through the construction of three corpora, one representative of the genre as a whole, and two that are artist specific, I show how the emcee T-Mo Goodie’s expressive practice highlights the rare three-beat affordances of the track. Submitted 2015 July 15; accepted 2015 December 15. KEYWORDS: corpus studies, rap music, flow, T-Mo Goodie, Outkast THIS article uses methods of corpus studies to address questions of creative practice in rap music, specifically how the material of the rapping voice—what emcees, hip-hop heads, and scholars call “the flow”—relates to the material of the previously recorded instrumental tracks collectively known as the beat.

It is hard to tell whether the ramshackle stage is inside or outside but it appears to be set up against a wall made of corrugated metal. All else is black. The camera cuts to a close-up of the curtains, which are parted to reveal a pale young man with crow’s nest hair wearing a sequined tuxedo and a skewed bow tie. The man holds a lit cigarette and behind him, overseeing proceedings, is a large statue of the Virgin Mary. As the man with the crow’s nest hair walks fully through the arch he opens his mouth and sings the words ‘As the snow flies, on a cold and grey Chicago morn another little baby child is born…’. The song continues with the singer alternately shuffling as if embarrassed by the attention of the camera and then holding his arms aloft in declamation or fixing the viewer with a steely gaze.
