MADIHUR REHMAN DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2013 Abstract The first chapter of the thesis, "The Path to Doom: America from Idea to Reality;'" takes the journey of America from its conception as an idea to its reality. The country that came into existence as a colony of Great Britain and became a refuge of the exploited and the persecuted on one hand and of the outlaws on other hand, soon transformed into a giant machine of exploitation, persecution and lawlessness, it is surprising to see how the noble ideas of equality, liberty and democracy and pursuit of happiness degenerated into callous profiteering. Faulkner & Morrison
William Faulkner and Toni Morrison are generally understood as two of the most important writers of the twentieth century, and, indeed, the work of each is integral to American literature. But why are Morrison and Faulkner so often Faulkner & mentioned in the same breath—he, born in the South, white and wealthy, she, the Morrison daughter of a working-class black family in the Midwest? Perhaps it is because in a country that works hard to live without a racial past, both Morrison’s and Faulkner’s work bring deep articulation to the often unseen, and more commonly, English 95.03 the unspeakable. This class will make some explorations across each author’s work, Prof. Parham looking for where their texts converge and diverge. As well, we will learn how to [email protected] talk and write about the visions, dreams, and nightmares—all represented as daily life—that these authors offer. Workload & Attendance This is a discussion driven class, and its greatest requirement is that you pay close attention—in class as well as while reading. This also means that we might make changes to the syllabus, adjusting according to our progress through the texts. You will complete 5 three page papers, of which I will drop the lowest grade. You may choose to skip paper #5, but you may not skip papers 1-4. For your final grade, you must submit at least four papers, revised if you like, as a portfolio. I do not give paper topics, but we can build one for you during office hours in 10 Johnson Chapel. -

Bloom’s GUIDES Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye Biographical Sketch Raised in the North, Toni Morrison’s southern roots were deliberately severed by both her maternal and paternal grandparents. Her maternal grandfather, John Solomon Willis, had his inherited Alabama farm swindled from him by a predatory white man; as a consequence of this injustice, he moved his family first to Kentucky, where a less overt racism continued to make life intolerable, and then to Lorain, Ohio, a midwestern industrial center with employment possibilities that were drawing large numbers of migrating southern blacks. Her paternal grandparents also left their Georgia home in reaction to the hostile, racist culture that included lynchings and other oppressive acts. As a result, the South as a region did not exist as a benevolent inherited resource for Morrison while she was growing up; it became more of an estranged section of the country from which she had been helped to flee. As is evident in her novels, Morrison returned by a spiritually circuitous route to the strong southern traditions that would again be reinvigorated and re-experienced as life sustaining. The future Nobel literature laureate was born Chloe Ardelia Wofford at home in Lorain, Ohio, on February 18, 1931, the second child and daughter to George and Ella Ramah Willis Wofford. Two distinguishing experiences in her early years were, first, living with the sharply divided views of her parents about race (her father was actively disdainful of white people, her mother more focused on individual attitudes and behavior) and, second, beginning elementary school as the only child already able to read. -

Citizen Steinbeck: Giving Voice to the People provides a wonderful and fascinating overview of the life and literary achievement of John Steinbeck (1902-1968). English Professor Robert McParland tells a detailed story about Steinbeck’s life which begins in Salinas, California, as well as his struggle to be a successful writer, his days at work and in the war, and his literary success and achievements. As a writer, Steinbeck went beyond being a regionalist to become one of America’s most famous writers; he won a Pulitzer Prize, The National Book Award, and the Nobel Prize for Literature. He also had an international perspective having been part of the American military struggles overseas and having done some travel writing and setting some of his stories in other countries. Steinbeck began as a reporter but went on to write some stories with mythological elements as well as having characters that believed in witchcraft and astrology. His novels were set in the land with lush descriptions of the outdoors. Salinas, CA was part of the farming community and Steinbeck wrote of their times and struggles. Steinbeck also wrote about some of the animals in these landscapes and one could argue that he also gave them and the land a voice. -

Synopsis Born on February 27, 1902, in Salinas, California, John Steinbeck dropped out of college and worked as a manual laborer before achieving success as a writer. His 1939 novel, The Grapes of Wrath, about the migration of a family from the Oklahoma Dust Bowl to California, won a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award. Steinbeck served as a war correspondent during World War II, and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. He died in New York City in 1968. Early Years Famed novelist John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. was born on February 27, 1902, in Salinas, California. His books, including his landmark work The Grapes of Wrath (1939), often dealt with social and economic issues. Steinbeck was raised with modest means. His father, John Ernst Steinbeck, tried his hand at several different jobs to keep his family fed: He owned a feed-and-grain store, managed a flour plant and served as treasurer of Monterey County. His mother, Olive Hamilton Steinbeck, was a former schoolteacher. For the most part, Steinbeck—who grew up with three sisters—had a happy childhood. He was shy, but smart, and formed an early appreciation for the land, and in particular California's Salinas Valley, which would greatly inform his later writing. According to accounts, Steinbeck decided to become a writer at the age of 14, often locking himself in his bedroom to write poems and stories. -

Ernest Hemingway Global American Modernist Lisa Tyler Sinclair Community College, USA Iconic American modernist Ernest Hemingway spent his entire adult life in an interna- tional (although primarily English-speaking) modernist milieu interested in breaking with the traditions of the past and creating new art forms. Throughout his lifetime he traveled extensively, especially in France, Spain, Italy, Cuba, and what was then British East Africa (now Kenya and Tanzania), and wrote about all of these places: “For we have been there in the books and out of the books – and where we go, if we are any good, there you can go as we have been” (Hemingway 1935, 109). At the time of his death, he was a global celebrity recognized around the world. His writings were widely translated during his lifetime and are still taught in secondary schools and universities all over the globe. Ernest Hemingway was born 21 July 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois, also the home of Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the most famous modernist architects in the world. Hemingway could look across the street from his childhood home and see one of Wright’s innovative designs (Hays 2014, 54). As he was growing up, Hemingway and his family often traveled to nearby Chicago to visit the Field Museum of Natural History and the Chicago Opera House. Because of the 1871 fire that destroyed structures over more than three square miles of the city, a substantial part of Chicago had become a clean slate on which late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century architects could design what a modern city should look like.
