Continuity of Anglo-Saxon Iconography The Twilight Age Volume Three Bob Trubshaw Continuity of Anglo-Saxon Iconography is an attempt to understand what pre-conversion 'idols' – the weohs and stapols – might have looked like. More especially, this study aims to establish what the meaning and significance of these carvings might have been, based in large part on evidence from early Christian stone crosses. In the process this study sheds light on the way these motifs would have been understood by people at the time – which is not necessarily how such imagery came to be regarded a few centuries later. As none of the wooden weohs and stapols have survived there is, clearly, considerable speculation involved. However these suggestions fit within a plausible 'underlying' worldview established in the first two volumes of The Twilight Age. The fifth volume of this series looks in more detail at the locations of such carvings. About The Twilight Age series Not that many decades ago English history between the fifth the eleventh centuries was deemed the ‘Dark Ages’, largely because of the lack of evidence. Much has changed, and scholarship has shed considerable light on the later centuries. However by then many parts of Britain were evolving into Anglo-Scandinavian culture. Evidence for the Anglo-Germanic fifth and sixth centuries is still scarce and difficult to interpret, so the epithet ‘Dark Ages’ is still apt. The years in between occupy a comparative ‘twilight zone’, fascinating because of numerous social changes, not least the various cultural transitions which ultimately led to Christianity being the dominant religion. -

Kirkliston to Cramond Last leg of a 4-part route down the full length of the valley of the River Almond. Starts Kirkliston. Quarter hourly bus (38) from Edinburgh. Also buses 63 and 600. Varied walk: banks of R. Almond, beside the airport runway; woods, estate; coast. Distance: 14 km Walk begins at bus stop on Kirkliston High St. adjacent to The Square beside the old Parish Church. Find a narrow snicket, behind black safety railings, next to a whitewashed cottage (2 doors right of the cottage with the ‘Amulree’ wall plaque). Follow the snicket as it doglegs left and the right towards the river. You emerge from Cobblers Close onto Wellflats Rd. Bear right. After a few paces go straight over the old railway path. After a few more paces, at the Y-junction, take the right-hand road straight ahead with a neat, brown fence on the right. The road looks to be ending but keep straight ahead along a really narrow pathway between houses, with a high fence on the right. This alleyway leads to the river bank. Carry on along a most pleasant stretch of river bank until you come to a bridge. Cross over. Turn sharp left to follow reasonably close to the riverside. Keep to the thin footpath on the low levee, rather than the field edge. Soon you come to the strange set of buildings of Hallyards. Walk straight ahead, keeping to the left of buildings. There are all sorts of strange containers, old vehicles and trucks. Keep going until your way appears to be blocked, or partially blocked. -

‘NORTHERN GODS IN MARBLE’ The Romantic Rediscovery Marble of Norse Mythology [ KNUT LJØGODT ABSTRACT The Norse myths were rediscovered in the late 18th century, and became important to contemporary culture during the first half of the 19th century. The Romantics discussed the usage of themes from Norse mythology; soon, these themes became widespread in art and literature. Their popularity is closely connected with the national ideals and political situations of the period, but they were often given individual artistic interpretations. The ] Romantic interest in Norse myths and heroes held sway over artists and writers throughout the 19th century. Introduction Karen Blixen’s short story ‘Sorrow-Acre’, published in Winter’s Tales (1942) takes place at a Danish country estate in the late 18th century. During a conversation between the baron and his nephew, they discuss Classical versus Norse mythol- ogy. The young man has discovered the Norse myths through a recently pub- lished work: ‘He mentioned the name of the author, Johannes Ewald, and recited a couple of the elevated verses.’ The book he refers to is Ewald’s play The Death of Balder (1775). He goes on to praise the Norse gods: ‘And I have wondered, while I read,’ he went on after a pause, still moved by the lines he himself had declaimed, ‘that we have not till now understood how much our Nordic my- thology in moral greatness surpasses that of Greece and Rome. If it had not been for the physical beauty of the ancient gods, which have come down to us in marble, no modern mind could hold them worthy of worship. -
North West Locality Open Space Action Plan
North West Locality Open Space Action Plan March 2017 North West Edinburgh Open Space Action Plan (March 2017) Introduction This is one of four Open Space Action Plans to support delivery of Open Space 2021, Edinburgh’s Open Space Strategy. Open Space is a key element of Edinburgh’s physical, social and environmental fabric and Open Space 2021 sets guiding standards for existing and new open space provision as the city grows. Through standards based on open space quality, size and distance from homes, the Strategy aims to increase the number of people that can benefit from greenspaces that are sustainably managed, biologically diverse and contribute to health and wellbeing. The Open Space Profile shows how the Locality compares to the overall picture of open space across the city, highlighting changes to provision. It is a working plan, to be reviewed periodically to capture collective efforts which lead to the improvement and extension of Edinburgh’s green network. Actions, including estimated costs, may be subject to review, further feasibility studies and change. The Action Plan sets out proposals to help reduce inequalities in access to good quality open space and play provision. In time, it will reflect local environment priorities emerging through co-production of Locality Improvement Plans by Community Planning partners. The first version shows citywide priorities identified by Edinburgh’s annual parks quality assessment and actions carried forward from the existing Play Area Action Plan (2011-16) and previous Open Space Strategy (2010). The Action Plan will co-ordinate ongoing open space management actions with those relating to development, including changes arising from individual planning decisions and the delivery of new parks and play areas through the adopted Edinburgh Local Development Plan (LDP). -

It is true, also, to say that the history of the Church of Christ is the biography of the Christian heroes and heroines who have adorned the Church by their lives and advanced its work by their sacrifices. Progress everywhere depends on personality; and the great man is God's best gift to his generation and to the Church of Christ. Nowhere has this been more true than in the Scottish Church, and nowhere is there to be found a nobler roll of great men. It is with this conviction that the Author has written the present work. Further, he feels that there is no more illuminating study than the story of the Scottish Church ; and if that story is to be fully appreciated, there is no more profitable method of studying it than through the lives of the men and women who have done so much to make the Church in Scotland what it is to-day. -

What Charicles Knew: Fragmentary Narration and Ambiguity in Heliodorus’ Aethiopica BENEDEK KRUCHIÓ University of Cambridge Towards the end of the tenth and last book of Heliodorus’ Aethiopica, a character who was left behind by the protagonists in Delphi in Book Four makes a surpris- ing reappearance in Ethiopia: Charicles, the Greek foster-father of the heroine Charicleia, arrives in Meroe, where the royal couple reside, and demands his daughter back from king Hydaspes, who is her biological father. While Charicles’ resurfacing is in itself surprising,1 scholars have particularly been puzzled by the question what he knows about Charicleia when he enters the scene: when the girl and her lover Theagenes elope from Delphi, Charicles is aware of her Ethiopian background but not of her royal descent; however, according to the established reading of a short segment of the novel’s finale, he seems to know who her parents are when he brings forward his request. Heliodorean scholarship has heretofore contented itself with branding Cha- ricles’ differing states of knowledge as a striking inconsistency.2 I shall first show that this is not just in general an obviously unsatisfactory approach to a puzzling passage, but also highly unlikely to be an accurate explanation in the present case. My paper will proceed by presenting alternative solutions to this puzzle. The first one sticks to the conventional reading of the two abovementioned direct speeches, arguing firstly that the communicative line which results in Charicles’ acquisition of knowledge can be reconstructed, and secondly that certain narratological prop- erties of the Aethiopica invite the reader to make assumptions about unnarrated events like those which are necessary for explaining Charicles’ surprising state of ————— 1 According to Lowe 2003, 256, Charicles’ reappearance is ‘the novel’s final and most mas- terly programmed surprise’; cf. -

The Welsh & Their Literature By George Henry Borrow The Welsh and their Literature The Welsh style themselves Cymry or Cumry, a word which, in their language, means a number of people associated together. They were the second mass of population which moved from Asia into Europe. They followed and pushed forward the Gael or Gauls; were themselves impelled onward by the Slowaks or Sclavonians, who were themselves hunted, goaded, and pestered by a wild, waspish race of people, whom, for want of a better name, we will call Tatars or Tartars. The Cymry have left their name behind them in various regions far eastward of the one where they now sojourn. The most easterly countries which still bear their name, or modifications thereof, are Cambia, „which is two dayes journey from the head of the great river Bruapo,‟ and the Cryme or Crimea. In those parts, and „where Constantinople now is,‟ they tarried a considerable time, and increased and multiplied marvellously: and it was whilst tarrying in those regions, which they called collectively Gwlad yr Haf, or the summer country, that an extraordinary man was born amongst them, who was called by Greeks and Romans, hundreds of years after his death, Hesus, but whom the Cymry called, and still do call, Hu or Hee, with the surname of Cadarn, or the Mighty. This Hu or Hesus taught his countrymen the use of the plough, and to a certain extent civilized them. Finding eventually that the summer country was becoming over-populated, he placed himself at the head of a vast multitude and set off towards the west. -

The Royal Ancestry of Zephaniah
7G THE ROYAL ANCESTRY OF ZEPHANIAH. IN discussing the genealogy of the prophet Zephaniah, Prof. G. A. Smith says, "Zephaniah's great-great-grand father Hezekiah was in all probability the king." 1 This is to state the case more strongly than has been usual, but not more strongly than is reasonable. I return to the subject because it is possible in one respect to strengthen Prof. Smith's argument, 2 and to maintain the probability of the royal ancestry of the prophet even in view of a less favourable chronology than that adopted by Prof. Smith. The present state of opinion on the subject may be briefly summarized thus: that the Hezekiah who, according to Zephaniah i. 1, was the great-great-grandfather of the prophet, was identical with the king of J udah of that name, seems to some 3 impossible or improbable, to many 4 at least possible and not improbable, to many 5 probable. There are several more or less weighty reasons for accepting the identification; there are no valid objections; for my main purpose in this note is to show that what is generally regarded as the most serious objection-the chronological-is invalid. It will be well first of all briefly to recapitulate the reasons for the identification. (1) The genealogy of Zephaniah is, quite exceptionally, carried back four generations. Three issues by Haimo Grebenstein – Germany went before this one. Because last International Asatru Summer Camp was different from the one we had Chaos and Confusion 3 three years ago, this magazine will show some by May-Britt Bjørlo Henriksen – Norway differences to the one we made after that camp. But some things have remained the same: it is still full with IASC 2012 in a Polish mirror 4 stories, memories, pictures and anecdotes from by Vrede and Agnieszka – Poland another great, splendid, magnificent and successful summer camp! The auction 5 Thinking back to those days last July and August I really by Todd Chambers – Denmark / USA only can find nice and good memories. I remember many nice and good talks, numerous pleasant passings Seidhr workshop at IASC 2012 7 of horns, interesting excursions, lectures and by Christian Kordas – Germany workshops and a very nice and pleasant stay at a comfortable place with a group of great people.
