Predator Dependent Mimetic Complexes: Do Passerine Birds Avoid Central European Red-And-Black Heteroptera?
Eur. J. Entomol. 107: 349–355, 2010 http://www.eje.cz/scripts/viewabstract.php?abstract=1546 ISSN 1210-5759 (print), 1802-8829 (online) Predator dependent mimetic complexes: Do passerine birds avoid Central European red-and-black Heteroptera? Aposematism, true bugs, Heteroptera, avian predators, mimetic complex Abstract. True bugs are generally considered to be well protected against bird predation. Sympatric species that have similar warning coloration are supposed to form a functional Müllerian mimetic complex avoided by visually oriented avian predators. We have tested whether these assumptions hold true for four species of European red-and-black heteropterans, viz. Pyrrhocoris apterus, Lygaeus equestris, Spilostethus saxatilis, and Graphosoma lineatum. We found that individual species of passerine birds differ in their responses towards particular bug species. Great tits (Parus major) avoided all of them on sight, robins (Erithacus rubecula) and yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella) discriminated among them and attacked bugs of some species with higher probability than oth- ers, and blackbirds (Turdus merula) frequently attacked bugs of all the tested species. Different predators thus perceive aposematic prey differently, and the extent of Batesian-Müllerian mimetic complexes and relations among the species involved is predator dependent. INTRODUCTION some cases their very existence are often suspect and Unpalatable animals usually use warning signals to dis- mostly lack experimental evidence. Only few comparative courage predators from attacking them. -

By its rarity in the Catalan fauna, the mirid Deraeocoris (D.) schach (Fabricius, 1781) and the pentatomid Sciocoris (N.) maculatus Fieber, 1851 are interesting species. Plus being rare species, the mirid Macrotylus (A.) solitarius (Meyer-Dür, 1843) and the pentatomid Sciocoris (S.) umbrinus (Wolff, 1804) are new records for the Natural Park. The mirids Alloetomus germanicus Wagner, 1939 and Amblytylus brevicollis Fieber, 1858, and the pentatomid Eysarcoris aeneus (Scopoli, 1763) are new contributions for the Park checklist. The Heteropteran richness of Can Coll suggests them as study group for the environmental education goals of this School of Nature. CH1NA 1 During the Field Museum Anthropological Expedition to the Near East in 1934, the leader, Dr. Henry Field, and his collaborators obtained a large amount of zoological material. Later, more speci mens were acquired by Dr. Field's collector, Yusuf Lazar, in Iraq. From Mr. H. St. J. Philby, in Mecca, Arabia, Field Museum also received, as a much appreciated gift, various zoological specimens from Arabia. Among the insects obtained as indicated were some interesting Hemiptera, which I am recording at the request of the Director of Field Museum and by permission of the Trustees of the British Museum (Natural History). A cicada, Melampsalta fraseri, from Iraq, and a genus and species of fulgorid, Philbyella arabica, from Arabia, proved to be new and are, therefore, described. Wherever possible, the spelfing of the locality names conforms to that adopted by the Permanent Committee on Geographical Names of the Royal Geographical Society, London. The milkweed bug Spilostethus pandurus (Scopoli, 1763) (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae) is reported for the first time in Venezuela. -
Introduction to True Bugs (Heteroptera) of the Neotropics
Chapter 1 Introduction to True Bugs (Heteroptera) of the Neotropics Antônio R. Panizzi and Jocêlia Grazia Abstract True bugs (Heteroptera) are a diverse and complex group of insects, particularly in the neotropics. The fauna ofthese bugs has been investigated through time, but our knowledge of the species living in the Neotropical Region is lirnited. ln this introductory chapter, we give a general view on true bugs c1assification and biogeography, with concise comments on their general characteristics and bioecology of each major taxon that comprise each of the seven infraorders of Heteroptera. 1.1 Introduction The true bugs (Heteroptera) constitute a very interesting widely distributed group of insects, which is greatly diversified in tropical zones. Considered the largest group of insects with incomplete metamorphosis, heteropterans have been studied on both basic and applied aspects worldwide. Along the years, several books have been published on Heteroptera, the majority on specific aspects, such as certain groups (taxa) of particular areas, and others on more general comprehensive issues. Of more broad interest, two books about the latter were published relatively recently. The first was dedicated to the c1assification and natural history of true bugs in particular, with insights on the history of the study of Heteroptera, how to collect and preserve true bugs, historical biogeogra- A.R. Abstrakt: Nápadně zbarvené druhy mohou vytvářet mimetické komplexy. Jedním z nich je rozsáhlý černo- červený mimetický komplex v palearktické oblasti. Tvoří ho zástupci napříč taxony členovců s různou úrovní obrany a investicí do ní. K popsání jednotlivých mimetických vztahů v tomto komplexu je třeba poznat efektivitu těchto obranných mechanismů vůči predátorům. Reakce jednotlivých predátorů se značně liší. Odlišnost reakcí primárně závisí na schopnosti vnímat prostředky obrany, pomocí smyslových a kognitivních schopností. Mechanismy a efektivita antipredační obrany jsou předmětem řady studií, avšak stále chybí popis některých mechanismů u řady zástupců tohoto mimetického komplexu. Z tohoto důvodu jsou potřeba další studie, umožňující v budoucnosti vyvození mimetických vztahů panujících v tomto mimetickém komplexu.
