The Panthers earned their second crown in as many years with a 2-0 shutout over Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, last Saturday afternoon at Edwardsville, IL. EIU is 17-6-1 for the season, including an 8-0 road record. ''We are just ecstatic I , " exclaimed coach Reichel Sunday afternoon. "It was a total team effort. Everyone played their hearts out there this weekend." Eastern Illinois, IAIAW champions, received a quarterfinal bye and met University of Dayton (ai) in semi-final action last Friday afternoon. Barb Stelk, freshman forward of Park Ridge ~aine East), fired in a rebound off co-captain Gigi ~acintosh's, senior of Macon (Mt. Zion) stick with just thirty-six seconds (:36) remaining in the second overtime for the heart-stopping Panther victory. It was Stelk's first goal as a Panther. Barb has been moved into the starting lineup at a forward spot the last three games. She has replaced Gail Niebur, freshman of Edwardsville (Edwardsville) , 1-vho is out for the season with a stress fracture of the left ankle. Barb also assisted on EIU's second goal in the title game. EIU outshot Dayton 43-12 and had 26 penalty corners to just seven for the Flyers. Deb King, junior goalie of Sidney, 011 (Sidney) had to make just four (4) saves in earning her second shutout of the year. Deb Seybert, junior forward of Edwardsville (Edwardsville), fired in a rebound off Macintosh's stick to give EIU an early 1-0 lead over SIU~Edwardsville in the ~AW title game last Saturday afternoon. It was Deb's 20th of the season and came at 8:30 of the first half. Peggy Moore, senior forward and co-captain of ~t. Zion ~t. Zion) scored her lOth goal of the season at the 29:49 mark of the second half, with the assist going to Stelk (Barb). (MORE) Add 1-1-1-1 PAN'IiiER. STRIKERS MAIAW CHAMPIONS • King (Deb) earned her third shutout of the year as she stopped five (5) Cougars' shots. The Panthers outshot the Cougars 30-6 and had 14 penalty corners to just six (6) for SlU-E. "Colleen (Fletcher, junior forward of Mascoutah/Mascoutah Community) played her best game of the season," conunented coach Reichel further. "It was a well-run tournament. We are very happy for Deb (King); she needed those two shutouts to her credit. Now we wait to see how the bracketing will be made for Nationals." EIU will drive by van to Ithica, NY, Tuesday Nov. 17 in order to arrive for the start of the AIAW Division II Nationals which begin Thursday Nov. 19 and conclude Saturday the 21st. EIU defeated Central ~issouri State (3-1) in last year's first-round action of the AIAW Division II Nationals at Edwardsville, IL. The Panthers, however, were sent into the Consolation bracket after a 2-1 tripping by eventual champion, LaSalle in quarterfinal play. EIU then defeated STU-Edwardsville 1-0 in quarterfinal Consolation action before being tripped 3-2 in double overtime and penalty flicks by the University of North Dakota in consolation semi-finals of the 16-team national event. This year's AIAW Division II National will have eight teams competing for the crown, in the double-elimination tournament. The Panthers' victory over STU-Edwardsville, last Saturday, marked the fifth meeting between the two schools this year. EIU won four and the other game ended in a 1-1 tie because of darkness (refer to season results this release). The 2-0 MAlAW title game marked the largest margin of victory for the Panthers over the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars this year. LaSalle is defending Al.AW Division II National Champion, and the Region 1B victor will make the short trip to Ithica, NY to defend its crown. STU-Edwardsville had defeated Notre Dame 3-2 and Franklin (IN) College 3-2 to get to the l\fA.IAW Championship game last Saturday afternoon. Dayton tripped Franklin 3-2 for third place. ---# jnn #--- Add 1-1-1-1 EIU FIELD HOCKEY f:'TATISTICS AFTER 24 GAMES • EIU POINT TOTALS AFTER 24 C~ffiS: Deb Seybert ..•..•• (28) 20 Goals 8 Assists Peggy Moore ....•.• (14) 10 Goals 4 Assists Gail Niebur* .•...• (10) 10 Goals Gigi Macintosh ...• ( 9) 4 Goals 5 Assists Sue Carr • . • . • . • • .
