Seven years ago, the University of Evansville set out to rebuild a volleyball program and entrustedI theK processE to an experiencedW coach whoA hadN proven heM knew how to win. In the years followingS the hire, Mike Swan has built Evansville into a Missouri Valley Conference contender and established himself as one of the sport’s top coaches. “Rebuilding in the MVC is a much longer process than I expected because the MVC is so strong,” Swan said. “In the last two or three years, we have been able to find our niche in recruiting because girls want small environ- ments with strong academics. Because of everything UE provides, we have had strong recruiting classes the last few years.” It didn’t take long for Swan to see that the Evansville campus and com- munity was a match for him as a professional and in his everyday life. The 2009 season marks Swan’s second-longest coaching tenure at one school. “Evansville just proves to be a great fit for me,” Swan said. “It continues to improve, and I feel more confident that this is a great place to be in and the right fit for me. I consistently have great assistants to help challenge the players, which is also an extra bonus. “With the small environment and the friendships I have made with the coaches and the community, I continue to love it here at Evansville,” Swan said. “It just has so much to offer for me personally.” When first arriving at Evansville in January of 2002, Swan inherited a team that had just won five games the previous season. Although it would be a major obstacle in Swan’s career, he quickly turned the program in a new direction. After two seasons with the Aces, he more than doubled Evans- ville’s 2002 win total. Before his time at UE, Swan had proven that he was a winner. While at Morehead State, Swan was named the Coach of the Year in 2001 and led the school to second-place OVC finishes in both 2001 and 2002. In his final three seasons with the Eagles, Swan’s teams were av- eraging over 20 wins per season and posted regional rankings during his last two campaigns at MSU.

Swan’s defensive mindset also played a tremendous role for Morehead State as the school was ranked among the nation’s leaders in digs per game in four out of Swan’s five seasons as head coach. Twice Swan took the Eagles as high as second in the nation in digs per game, including his final season when the team averaged 21.4 digs per game. Prior to taking over the helm at Morehead State, Swan spent a season at NCAA Division II American International College in Springfield, Mas- sachusetts, where the Yellow Jackets recorded a 23-10 mark in 1997. A native to the state of Indiana, Swan was called upon to resurrect a program that had fallen on hard times in his home state. Swan brought his golden touch to Manchester College and guided a school that had only won two matches one season before to its second-highest victory total ever after three seasons. Swan also directed the teams at Huntington College to new heights during his eight-year tenure with the Foresters. As head coach, he guided Huntington to national prominence at the NAIA level. In 1993, Swan led the program to a 36-9 overall record, No. 11 national ranking and an ap- pearance in the NAIA national championship tournament. Named conference “Coach of the Year” in seven out of his eight seasons at Huntington, Swan’s highest honor came after the 1993 campaign as he was named Mid-East Region Coach of the Year. Swan’s head coaching career began at Southwood High School in Wabash, Indiana, where he led the Knights to a 115-37 mark in six seasons and helped Southwood reach the state semifinals in 1983. A product of Lagro, Indiana, Swan graduated from Manchester College in 1979 with a degree in Secondary Education. He is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and has a Level II certification through the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA).

Swan’s Career Highlights *457 career victories *2001 OVC Coach of the Year *Ranks in the nation’s Top 40 in victories among active Division I coaches *14 Post-season Tournament Appearances *Seven Conference Championship Teams 3 ASSISTANT COACH

The UniversityO of EvansvilleM volleyball team welcomesE N Tom DMendozaO as the newZ A assistantT coach for the 2009-10M season. Mendoza works with the setters and outsides along with primary passers.

“We are happy to welcome Tom,” said head coach Mike Swan. “He was exactly what we were looking for. He brings energy, a good setting background and a great work ethic.”

Mendoza, a native of Buffalo Grove, , comes to UE after spending the last two seasons as the volunteer assistant at Michigan State. While at Michigan State, Mendoza and the Spartans appeared in the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2007. He also served on the Michigan State volleyball summer camp staff in 2007 and 2008 and was the director of Spartan Session volleyball camps and clinics.

A three-year letterwinner in volleyball at Newman University and a one-year letterwinner at Lewis University, Mendoza had an outstanding playing career. He was a 10-time Mid-America Men’s Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference Setter of the Week and was a three-time all-conference selection. During his playing career, he was also named a NAIA All-American.

Most recently, Mendoza was the head coach of the Spartan Junior 16 Girls club team that finished first in the Michigan Power League. He also served as the head coach for the Juggernaut Volleyball Club in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, and the Sports Performance 15 Elite Boys that earned fifth place at the Junior Olympic Nationals.

Mendoza received his bachelor’s degree in management information systems from Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois.

Joining the UE volleyball program in 2009 as a graduate assistant is Rose Obunaga, a Rmembero of the sKenyae National VolleyballO Teamb at theu 2000n and 2004a Olympicg Games.a Obunaga will assist in numerous areas, including team and individual skill sessions, practice planning, and game preparation.

Obunaga first made the Kenya National Team in the mid-90s and was most valuable player at the 1997 and 1999 All-African Games. Her first Olympic Games appearance was in 2000 in Sydney, and she competed again for Kenya at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. She was a first team NJCAA All-American at Southwest Missouri State University-West Plains in 2002 and 2003, and in 2005 was chosen as a NAIA first team Nationals All-Amerian at Columbia College.

She graduated from Columbia College in 2006 with a degree in business administration. Since graduating from college, Obunaga has served as an assistant coach at Columbia College and as a club coach in Columbia, Missouri, and West Plains, Missouri.

4 FACILITIES

Carson Center on the University of Evansville campus is the home for Aces’ Volleyball. It features seating for 500 and an atmosphere that is one of the best in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Under the direction of Strength & Conditioning Coach Joe Hermes, UE volleyball players receive individual attention in order to reach their potential on the floor. A Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, Hermes designs programs that improve physical performance while decreasing the chance of injury. The athletic training room in Carson Center is under the direction of UE Head Trainer Terry Collins and Volleyball Trainer Kristin Hodge. The UE training staff works to prevent, assess and rehabilitate injuries. The Aces also utilize three team doctors and the staff at ProRehab, PC to provide the best care for UE student-athletes.

Renovation of the volleyball locker room in 2007 included 14 new birch wooden lockers and a flat panel television with surround sound. 5 S E A S O N O U T L O O K After an absence from the 2007 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, the 2008 University of Evansville volleyball team got a taste of success after earning a bid to postseason play. One season later, head coach Mike Swan and the Purple Aces look to take the whole feast by returning a strong nucleus of last year’s team. The experience of knowing the system combined with a passion to go to the next level gives Evansville a step in the right direction.

“We had key production from every class last year,” Swan said. “I think it’s a good thing that every class wants to contribute. I think that is why having depth at each position now is going to be very beneficial as long as we can keep everybody healthy. I think we will be able to do good things.

“The mindset has finally changed here to where people are thinking that we are good and can come up with huge wins not just once in a while but on a consistent basis.”

Success for the Aces starts with senior leadership from Ginta Gabruseva and Rachel Robinson. “I would love for both of them to finish on a high note their last year,” Swan said. “I know that they want to be very successful and go back to the conference tournament to advance further than we did last year. I think they feel good about where their game level is, and I think they have a lot of confidence in the people behind them.”

Gabruseva came on strong down the stretch for the Aces in 2008 and earned a place on the all-tournament team at the MVC tournament in Wichita, Kansas. She finished third on the team after averaging 2.06 kills per game and finished eighth in the conference with 26 service aces. As one of the best blockers on the team, Robinson brings a strong presence at the net as she led the team last season with .75 blocks per set.

Anchoring the back row for the Aces is junior libero Julie Sylvester. The Carmel, Indiana, native was the only Purple Ace to play in all 32 matches, as she finished fifth in the conference with 4.80 digs per set and was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Week after combining for 26 digs against Bradley and Northern Iowa. Swan and the other coaches have challenged Sylvester to be more aggressive on the court this season. Joining Sylvester at defensive specialist is April Lubrecht. A spark plug for the defensive side of the ball, the sophomore appeared in 28 matches during her freshman season and finished with 364 digs. She tallied six matches with 10 or more digs. Freshman Maia Miller brings a new face to the crowd as she is anticipated to play defensive specialist.

“Defensively, I think this will be the best team we have ever had,” Swan said. “From the strength of the back row with digging and serve receive, I think we are going to be very strong in that regard.”

Helping the offense get started on the court is sophomore setter Ellen Sawin. Sawin was the first UE player since 2003 to be named to the MVC All-Freshman team after leading the team and finishing in the top-10 in the confer- ence with 7.59 assists per set. The New Lenox, Illinois, native was named the MVC Freshman and Player of the Week in November. Swan said that her 6-0 height and leadership skills make her a valuable asset.

Outside hitter returns two letterwinners from last season as sophomore Brooke Maher and junior Emily Wandersee will both see action at that role. Maher is one of those players who does everything well on the court ac- cording to Swan. The Mason, Ohio, native had a strong freshman campaign and led the team with 278 kills. She posted nine double-doubles and was named the MVC Freshman of the Week in early October. Moving from the middle to outside is Wandersee who earned her first all-conference honors as a sophomore after leading the team with 62 block assists and 75 total blocks. She finished in the top-25 in the MVC in kills per set (2.30), blocks per set (.68), and points per set (2.79). “We think that what we can do with Emily from the outside is unlimited because she can still run attacks out of the middle and reach really high from the outside,” Swan said. The position will be further bolstered by a pair of incoming freshmen—Jessica Knackmuhs and Hannah Wilson.

The middle hitter position will consist of a few changes from the 2008 team. Junior Viera Rajcan will move to the position from the outside and sophomore Kaisi Nixon will also see playing time. A hard worker with tremendous strength, Rajcan played in 18 straight matches to close out the 2008 season and had her season-high seven kills in the final regular season match against Illinois State. Nixon played in 22 matches in 2008 and was named to the all-tournament team at the Loyola Invitational. She finished third on the team averaging 3.58 assists per set. With her jumping and blocking ability, Swan expects Nixon to collect a lot of kills this season.

The team is set and the goal to reach the MVC Tournament in Omaha, Nebraska, is under way. Ranked sixth in preseason conference polls, the Purple Aces will face a tough non-conference schedule including Memphis, Cincin- nati and College of Charleston before matching up with Missouri Valley foes. “Every year the Valley gets tougher and tougher, and I don’t see that changing at all,” Swan said. “As we get better, everybody else does too. There is not a team that we can take for granted. I think it will be a dogfight.”
