He has revitalized the winning tradition, which he was also part of as an EIU student-athlete. In 2008, he graduated an accomplished seven-player senior class that led the program to 33 victories during their careers. The 2009 senior class was part of 34 victories during, making it the winningest EIU class of the decade. Howarth played four years (1989-92) at Lakeside Field under coach Cizo Mosina and graduated from EIU. He was chosen as the program’s seventh head coach in July 2000 and has moved into fourth place on the all- time wins list. Howarth will lead the Panthers back into The Summit League in the fall of 2011. Eastern competed in the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League’s former moniker, while he was a student-athlete. The 2009 Panthers were the only MVC team to defeat conference champion Missouri State during regular- season play. Alex Harrison tallied nine assists to rank second in the Valley and seventh nationally in assists per 11TH YEAR game. Eastern led the way with three MVC All-Freshman Team selections. Midfielder Jerry Maddi also earned Honorable Mention All-MVC recognition, the only freshman in the league to receive an all-conference award. Eleven Panthers scored a goal in 2009 and all six game-winners came from six different players. Sean Molony was in goal for six of the seven shutouts and led the MVC in saves. In 2006 and 2007, EIU posted its first consecutive double-figure win seasons since 1988-89. The 2007 campaign was highlighted by a dozen wins, Valley league leaders in goals and assists, and a bevy of individual honors headlined by the program’s first Academic All-America selection. With their 12 wins in 2007, the Panthers matched the program record in the Valley era (1996- present). Eight of those wins came in shutout fashion, as EIU set a new high-water mark for defensive excellence in the MVC years. The Panthers opened the 2007 season 4-0 after winning the team titles at the Bradley City Centre Classic and UMKC Invitational. Winning the season opener in overtime foreshadowed the heroics that followed, as 2007 turned out to be the year of overtime. Eastern played in eight OT games, posting a 4-1-3 record. Forward Alex Harrison was involved in all four golden goals, scoring two and assisting on the other two. Brad Peters led the league with 10-plus goals for three straight years (2006-08), becoming the first Panther in the Valley era to record back-to-back 10-plus goal seasons. He was a three-time First Team All-MVC selection as well as an NSCAA All-Midwest Region pick from 2006-08. Mick Galeski assisted on five of Peters’ goals in 2007 en route to finishing with a league-leading 12 helpers, another MVC-years record. Adam Gartner, a four-year starter that closed out his collegiate career in 2008, became the first Panther and MVC soccer player to be selected as a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. He was also an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honoree. In the classroom, Howarth’s teams have also excelled. Eastern led the league with five MVC Scholar-Athlete Team honorees in 2007. Mike Lewis, who sported a perfect 4.0 GPA at the end of the ‘07 fall semester, was named an Academic All-America, the program’s first such honoree. Gartner later received All-American Scholar kudos from the NSCAA and accompanied his

  • History and Character of Drake University (Taken from Drake University Undergraduate 2005-06 Catalog)
History and Character of Drake University (taken from Drake University Undergraduate 2005-06 Catalog) It was an ambitious undertaking. Confronted with declining economic conditions, the Disciples of Christ in Iowa were faced with the decision to move their established Oskaloosa College, the first Christian college founded in Iowa, to another location. In 1881, a zealous group, led by George Thomas Carpenter, journeyed to Des Moines, where they found support for their proposed move. In March 1881, bolstered with a $20,000 pledge from General Francis Marion Drake of Centerville, Iowa, the educational institution became a reality. In gratitude, the University’s trustees named their institution after General Drake, a Civil War general, former Iowa governor, banker, railroad builder and attorney. This was Drake University’s modest beginning. Its founders dreamed of an institution that was broad-based and liberally nonsectarian. To establish the educational climate in which the University would operate, they issued the following statement: ‘‘This University has been designed upon a broad, liberal and modern basis. The articles of incorporation provide that all its departments shall be open to all without distinction of sex, religion or race. In its management and influence, it will aim at being Christian, without being sectarian.’’ While corporate affiliation with the Disciples was eventually terminated, the University continues to be guided by this statement of nondiscrimination and the progressive vision of its founders. During the administration of Drake’s first president and chancellor, George T. Carpenter (1881-1893), the University established itself as an integral part of a young and growing community in the world’s richest agricultural area.
