Tom Schaar Professional Skateboard Athlete TOM SCHAAR PROFESSIONAL SKATEBOARD ATHLETE BORN LOS ANGELES, CA LIVES MALIBU, CA HEIGHT 4’5” WEIGHT 70 LBS. SPONSORS DC SHOES, RED BULL ENERGY DRINK, ELEMENT SKATEBOARDS, MEGARAMP, PRO-TEC HELMETS, SKATELAB BIO Inspired by his older brother John, Tom Schaar began skateboarding when he was four-years-old. And, it didn’t take long before his love and skill for the sport evolved. In fact, he entered his first competition just one year later at the age of five! Best known for his incredible acrobatics, the native Californian is a “big-air tranny” skateboarder. Tom can be usually be found flying high at skateparks, bowls, verts and mini-mega ramps, all at a level that extends way beyond his young age. The most challenging trick Schaar has landed is a backside 360 to 900 on the MegaRamp – the youngest skateboarder to complete this move. He has also successfully mastered the 30” vert ramp and landed a front side 540/rodeo flip and a back flip. But even having accomplished techniques that most boys his age don’t attempt, Schaar’s appetite for success isn’t satisfied. He is continually setting his goals higher and higher and working towards becoming an even better, well rounded skater. It is clear that Tom is on the path to success and the entire skateboarding industry is taking notice. Among the many that have taken note of Tom, professional skateboarders Bucky Lasek, Bob Burnquist and Steve Badillio have all mentored Schaar. All have encouraged him to try new tricks, develop a signature style, and make sure to keep skateboarding fun. With his many numerous accomplishments, it seems Schaar is doing just that. In 2008, Schaar became the youngest person to compete in the Tampa Am Vert contest and was also the youngest person to compete in the finals of the expert division at King of the Groms for two consecutive years (2008-2009). In February 2009, Fuel TV named him “All Out Athlete,” the youngest athlete to receive this honor. During the summer of 2009, Tom was featured in Disney and ESPN’s new TV series “Next X”. The series featured five advanced skateboarders and BMXer’s who were invited to Woodward West to show why they are considered future X Gamers. At the young age of 12, Tom became the youngest skateboarder to land a 900, which inducted him into the famed “900 Club” (8th in the world). To further that impressive feat, the same year Tom also became the first skateboarder to land a 1080, making history and headlines aroudn the world. Tom will no doubt continue to push the boundaries that contribute to the evolution of skateboarding. • THF-2008-Annual-Report
PAVING THE WAY 2008 ANNUAL REPORT TO HEALTHY COMMUNITIES Letter From The Founder 2008 flew past and we are stronger than ever. Even in a shaky economy, we’ve been able to help create more public skateparks in low-income areas than in previous years. It’s all thanks to the tireless work of our staff and our generous donors. But plenty of communities are still in need, and we hope to continue making the same positive differences in their lives as we have with our previous grant recipients. Orcas Island, Washington In 2008, we managed to raise over 1.5-million dollars at our Stand Up For Skateparks events, and we even hosted our first East Coast event in The Hamptons. But our mission is far from over. In fact, what we’ve learned this year is just how great the need for our assistance remains. In 2008 we awarded 668,516 dollars to 59 communities (compared to $525,500 to 53 communities in 2007). That’s a 27-percent increase in grant funding over 2007. Which brings us to 409 grants worth over 2.7-million dollars to help build skateparks since our inception in 2002. Tony Hawk flies over the Nathan Lazarus Skatepark in Nederland, Colorado I cannot stress enough the importance of skateparks in high-risk areas—they offer kids a safe place to go and something to do that gives them a sense of self-esteem they may never find anywhere else. This is especially true when those very kids are the ones petitioning the city with the hope of getting their own place to skate.
