  • THF-2008-Annual-Report
PAVING THE WAY 2008 ANNUAL REPORT TO HEALTHY COMMUNITIES Letter From The Founder 2008 flew past and we are stronger than ever. Even in a shaky economy, we’ve been able to help create more public skateparks in low-income areas than in previous years. It’s all thanks to the tireless work of our staff and our generous donors. But plenty of communities are still in need, and we hope to continue making the same positive differences in their lives as we have with our previous grant recipients. Orcas Island, Washington In 2008, we managed to raise over 1.5-million dollars at our Stand Up For Skateparks events, and we even hosted our first East Coast event in The Hamptons. But our mission is far from over. In fact, what we’ve learned this year is just how great the need for our assistance remains. In 2008 we awarded 668,516 dollars to 59 communities (compared to $525,500 to 53 communities in 2007). That’s a 27-percent increase in grant funding over 2007. Which brings us to 409 grants worth over 2.7-million dollars to help build skateparks since our inception in 2002. Tony Hawk flies over the Nathan Lazarus Skatepark in Nederland, Colorado I cannot stress enough the importance of skateparks in high-risk areas—they offer kids a safe place to go and something to do that gives them a sense of self-esteem they may never find anywhere else. This is especially true when those very kids are the ones petitioning the city with the hope of getting their own place to skate.

  • Skate Life: Re-Imagining White Masculinity by Emily Chivers Yochim
/A7J;(?<; technologies of the imagination new media in everyday life Ellen Seiter and Mimi Ito, Series Editors This book series showcases the best ethnographic research today on engagement with digital and convergent media. Taking up in-depth portraits of different aspects of living and growing up in a media-saturated era, the series takes an innovative approach to the genre of the ethnographic monograph. Through detailed case studies, the books explore practices at the forefront of media change through vivid description analyzed in relation to social, cultural, and historical context. New media practice is embedded in the routines, rituals, and institutions—both public and domestic—of everyday life. The books portray both average and exceptional practices but all grounded in a descriptive frame that ren- ders even exotic practices understandable. Rather than taking media content or technol- ogy as determining, the books focus on the productive dimensions of everyday media practice, particularly of children and youth. The emphasis is on how specific communities make meanings in their engagement with convergent media in the context of everyday life, focusing on how media is a site of agency rather than passivity. This ethnographic approach means that the subject matter is accessible and engaging for a curious layperson, as well as providing rich empirical material for an interdisciplinary scholarly community examining new media. Ellen Seiter is Professor of Critical Studies and Stephen K. Nenno Chair in Television Studies, School of Cinematic Arts, University of Southern California. Her many publi- cations include The Internet Playground: Children’s Access, Entertainment, and Mis- Education; Television and New Media Audiences; and Sold Separately: Children and Parents in Consumer Culture.

Park Rune Glifberg (Copenhagen, Denmark) This Danish bowl skater is among the oldest in the field at 38 but has an unmatchable style other skaters will be trying to mimic for years to come. He has two Skateboard Park gold medals from 2008 and 2009 to go with his silver from X Games Foz do Iguaçu 2013, and a bronze in 2012. One of just four athletes to compete at every X Games summer event, Glifberg has 12 total X Games medals from his 20 appearances. Though he was attempting to defend his Skateboard Park silver medal at X Games Barcelona, he was edged into fourth place in the last few seconds of the competition and just missed the bronze. Rune will be one to watch at X Games Munich 2013 with his determined sights set on getting back on that podium.
