  • Newbury Closed Championships Report
NEWBURY CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORT The biggest and best entry for several years from youngsters across West Berkshire took part in the Newbury Junior Table Tennis Championships held at Kennet Leisure Centre this weekend. The blue ribbon event the under 17 singles was won by top seed Sam Ricks from Pamber Heath who defeated Thatcham's Teifon Chamberlain the defending champion in the final. The standard of play was very high with both boys attacking well but Sam's greater consistancy saw him clinch the title in three straight games. The girls singles was won by Kennet School's Shannon Hillier who used her forehand topspin to great effect to beat Juno Randall from Tutts Clump. The Under 15 singles event was a family affair as Hermitage's Joseph Cornmell beat his younger brother Robert in the final. Robert had reached the final after squeezing past Aldermaston's Keiron Warre in five games in the semi. Robert Cornmell made up for this in the Under 13 singles as he retained the cup with Newbury's Tom Lewis the runner up. In the Under 11's Hungerford's Tom Kelly who practices at Inkpen Table Tennis Club emerged as the victor with Thatcham's Ben Haines the runner up. The doubles events were closely contested and there was an upset in the final of the junior doubles when Basingstoke's Michael Jones combined with Keiron Warre to defeat the favourites Sam Ricks and Sam Goodyer in five games after being 2 - 1 down. Warre also picked up the Langley Cup awarded by the tournament organiser for his positive attitude during the day.

Colin Oakes July We took a holiday in Ann Chance Phil Holt October speaker August September speaker speaker Always a quiet period as we drifted through Summer with a number of groups deciding to take a short break to enable members to reconnect with their families. September was the month for the T&D U3A AGM, given it was the second year in a row that its been held in September then it must now be a tradition?? We’re pleased that so many of our members were enthralled by the prospect of attending the AGM that as a reward we invited back Ann Chance as our speaker to provide some light relief. As our membership numbers continue to rise we reached a new peak at the October meeting with over 260 members attending, getting close to standing room only? Weatherwise, it’s impossible not to mention the weather. Halloween was again memorable as a late summer’s day as it has been for the last three years apparently? You may, or may not, believe in climate change but something’s afoot Trips and Events have, as usual, been busy with two trips, the first to the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in West Sussex and the second to the Royal Albert Hall for a backstage tour and concert. AGM Please note that what follows are notes on the AGM and do not constitute the definitive record of that meeting. Master of ceremonies for the AGM was the Secretary Mike Batson. Chairman’s Report The Chairman George Porter gave a quick review of the past year covering trips and events, theatre group visits, the Open day and the Barn dance.

  • Congregationalism in Edwardian Hampshire 1901-1914
FAITH AND GOOD WORKS: CONGREGATIONALISM IN EDWARDIAN HAMPSHIRE 1901-1914 by ROGER MARTIN OTTEWILL A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History School of History and Cultures College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham May 2015 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. Abstract Congregationalists were a major presence in the ecclesiastical landscape of Edwardian Hampshire. With a number of churches in the major urban centres of Southampton, Portsmouth and Bournemouth, and places of worship in most market towns and many villages they were much in evidence and their activities received extensive coverage in the local press. Their leaders, both clerical and lay, were often prominent figures in the local community as they sought to give expression to their Evangelical convictions tempered with a strong social conscience. From what they had to say about Congregational leadership, identity, doctrine and relations with the wider world and indeed their relative silence on the issue of gender relations, something of the essence of Edwardian Congregationalism emerges. In their discourses various tensions were to the fore, including those between faith and good works; the spiritual and secular impulses at the heart of the institutional principle; and the conflicting priorities of churches and society at large.

It assesses the relative capacity of the landscape to accommodate development in the rural areas of the District, outside of the established settlement boundaries. The capacity of each area has been awarded by testing the results of each assessment against the following criteria: Low capacity – the landscape area could not accommodate areas of new development without a significant and adverse impact on the landscape character. Occasional, very small scale development may be possible, providing it has regard to the setting and form of existing settlement and the character and the sensitivity of the adjacent character areas. Low/medium capacity – a minimal amount of development could be accommodated only in limited situations, providing it has regard to the setting and form of existing settlement and the character and the sensitivity of the adjacent character areas. Medium capacity – the landscape area could be able to accommodate areas of development in some parts, providing it has regard to the setting and form of existing settlement and the character and the sensitivity of the adjacent character areas.
