November 11 Cider Press Editorials Cell phone addiction a real thing The Cider Press - Presidential Election Poll by Jacob Bowen When people normally hear “cell phone addiction” they don’t take it as a real addiction, just something people use to describe someone who really enjoys their phone. But it’s so much more. We live in an age where phones have come from tools to a physical part of us. According to Jonathan Block from Psychiatry Advisor, many people who lose their phones for more than 20 minutes can start to experience effects similar to drug withdraw, includ- ing some pretty serious anxiety. We are so used to being connected to every part of our world around us, and the thought that something is happening can make someone feel unsafe. From personal experience, I can say that in a class where I have to put my phone away, it can make me extremely uncomfortable. According to the Huffington Post, we spend anywhere between 4.5-7 hours touching technology a day. Imagine what we could do with all of that time. Problems people complain about daily could be fixed by just dedicating that few hours to things that really matter. Despite how difficult it can seem to let go of your phone, it comes with huge benefits. I’ve even tested letting go of my phone for a few hours, and it was rough at first, but after a while, I felt more connected and focused. So, I urge you to try to set your phone down and take in the world around you without the use of a cell phone. The Cider Press The Cider Press - Editorial Policy
