Songs of the Century
Songs of the Century T. Austin Graham hat is the time, the season, the historical context of a popular song? When is it most present in the world, best able Wto reflect, participate in, or construct some larger social reality? This essay will consider a few possible answers, exploring the ways that a song can exist in something as brief as a passing moment and as broad as a century. It will also suggest that when we hear those songs whose times have been the longest, we might not be hearing “songs” at all. Most people are likely to have an intuitive sense for how a song can contract and swell in history, suited to a certain context but capable of finding any number of others. Consider, for example, the various uses to which Joan Didion is able to put music in her generation-defining essay “Slouching Towards Bethlehem,” a meditation on drifting youth and looming apocalypse in the days of the Haight-Ashbury counterculture. Songs create a powerful sense of time and place throughout the piece, with Didion nodding to the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quick- silver Messenger Service, and “No Milk Today” by Herman’s Hermits, “a song I heard every morning in the cold late spring of 1967 on KRFC, the Flower Power Station, San Francisco.”1 But the music that speaks most directly and reverberates most widely in the essay is “For What It’s Worth,” the Buffalo Springfield single whose chiming guitar fifths and famous chorus—“Stop, hey, what’s that sound / Everybody look what’s going down”—make it instantly recognizable nearly five decades later.2 To listen to “For What It’s Worth” on Didion’s pages is to hear a song that exists in many registers and seems able to suffuse everything, from a snatch of conversation, to a set of political convictions, to nothing less than “The ’60s” itself. -

The masters of the Beatles remasters By Jim Boulden CNN LONDON, England (CNN) – They were entrusted with gold. When the Beatles’ longtime record label, EMI, decided to remaster the Beatles’ music, they gave the raw material to a handful of men. Among them were EMI engineers Allan Rouse, the project coordinator, and Sean Magee. Rouse, in particular, was familiar with the tapes. He was the person who’d copied them from their original analog form to digital as a safety backup in 1991. He’s since worked on the Beatles’ projects “Live at the BBC,” “The Beatles Anthology” and “Let It Be … Naked.” CNN’s Jim Boulden was given the chance to sit down with Rouse and Magee. The following is an edited version of the interview. CNN: Why was this project taken, and why so long? Rouse: It was started four and a half years ago, and it has taken over that period of time about a year to do the whole thing. On average, about two weeks per album. CNN: What does this allow you to do that you couldn’t have done to these songs before? Rouse: When they were originally transferred to CD in 1986, digital technology was in its infancy and the gap of 22 years has allowed for a great increase in that technology. So the transfers are far superior now, and that was before we actually did any work to them. In addition to that, we had decided that we wanted to remove or improve technical faults within the recordings that could have been a bad edit, a dropout, vocal sibilance, vocal pops. -

Barton collection of Northwest sound recordings primarily consists of original recordings engineered and/or produced by Barton at Audio Recording, Inc., his own recording studio, which operated out of various locations in Seattle, Washington from 1961 through the late 2000s. The bulk of the collection is comprised of music recordings, but also contains a smaller percentage of spoken word recordings, as well as radio advertisements (many of which also incorporate music). Specific audio formats represented in the collection include: open reel analog tape, compact cassettes, analog sound discs (7 inch, 10 inch, 12 inch, and 16 inch), magnetic wire records, and compact discs. The collection also contains a small amount of manuscript material, which mainly consists of technical notes that were found with some recordings and very limited correspondence (chiefly from lawyers). In some instances, notes included on original containers also have been preserved when material has been rehoused.
