A few circuits were in order to keep the engine exercised and the pilot in touch with his plane. A nice, easy, gentle exercise which I still enjoy. A landing, done properly, is still the best bit. I hate scenes in movies where they show an aircraft landing but cut before touch down. How do we know if it was a good one? Don’t they understand that it’s the entire point ?! Or am I being a little OCD here… Back to the subject, in this case there was a nice gentle easterly blowing with a Nor’West change due a few hours later. In other words, it was a typical Canterbury late spring morning. The take-off on 07 was uneventful but by the time I got to base it was beginning to get a little lively. Nothing too spectacular but enough to make me only select two notches of flap for landing (it always seems to handle better in lumpy landings with only two notches). By the time I was down to short finals I was weighing up my options and trying to keep a little extra speed in hand. It seemed quite gusty in my lightweight plane! Within a couple of feet of the ground I thought I had enough control to get one wheel down and slow her from there, but it wasn’t to be. -

The carriers immediately went to General Quarters on what had already been an eventful morning. Using the clouds as cover, the Japanese aircraft managed to reach a point above ‘Taffy 1’ without being seen. Suddenly, at 0740 hrs, an A6M5 Reisen dived out of the clouds directly into the escort carrier USS Santee (CVE-29), crashing through its flightdeck on the port side forward of the elevator. Just 30 seconds later a second ‘Zeke’ dived towards the USS Suwannee (CVE-27), while a third targeted USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) – anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) fire managed to shoot down both fighters. Then, at 0804 hrs, a fourth ‘Zeke’ dived on the Petrof Bay, but when hit by AAA it swerved and crashed into the flightdeck of Suwanee, blowing a hole in it forward of the aft elevator. -

First Wright brothers’ airplane patent, based on their 1902 glider, is filed in America. Aug. 8, 1903. The Langley gasoline engine model airplane is successfully launched from a catapult on a houseboat. Dec. 8, 1903. Second and last trial of the Langley airplane, piloted by Charles M. Manly, is wrecked in launching from a houseboat on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Dec. 17, 1903. At Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk, N.C., Orville Wright flies for about 12 seconds over a distance of 120 feet, achieving the world’s first manned, powered, sustained, and controlled flight in a heavier-than-air machine. The Wright brothers made four flights that day. On the last, Wilbur Wright flew for 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet. (Three days earlier, Wilbur Wright had attempted the first powered flight, managing to cover 105 feet in 3.5 seconds, but he could not sustain or control the flight and crashed.) Celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation in 1/72 Scale 2010 USN/USMC/USCG 1/72 Aircraft Kit Survey J. Michael McMurtrey IPMS-USA 1746 Carrollton, TX [email protected] As 2011 marks the centennial of U.S. naval aviation, aircraft modelers might be interested in this list of US naval aircraft — including those of the Marines and Coast Guard, as well as captured enemy aircraft tested by the US Navy — which are available as 1/72 scale kits. Why 1/72? There are far more kits of naval aircraft available in this scale than any other. Plus, it’s my favorite, in spite of advancing age and weakening eyes. This is an updated version of an article I prepared for the 75th Anniversary of US naval aviation and which was published in a 1986 issue of the old IPMS-USA Update. It’s amazing to compare the two and realize what developments have occurred, both in naval aeronautical technology and the scale modeling hobby, but especially the latter. My 1986 list included 168 specific aircraft types available in kit form from thirty- three manufacturers — some injected, some vacuum-formed — and only three conversion kits and no resin kits. Many of these names (Classic Plane, Contrails, Eagle’s Talon, Esci, Ertl, Formaplane, Frog, Griffin, Hawk, Matchbox, Monogram, Rareplane, Veeday, Victor 66) are no longer with us or have been absorbed by others. This update lists 345 aircraft types (including the original 168) from 192 different companies (including the original 33), many of which, especially the producers of resin kits, were not in existence in 1986, and some of which were unknown to me at the time. -

A/C SERIAL NO.BAPC.83 SECTION 2B INDIVIDUAL HISTORY KAWASAKI Ki-100-1b BAPC.83/8476M MUSEUM ACCESSION NUMBER 85/AF/68 1945 Assembled at Kawasaki’s’ Kagamigahara factory in the last week of June 1945 as a KI-100 Otsu; production for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force ceased in August 1945, totalling some 390 aircraft. Constructors’ number 16336. Other than having an all-round vision canopy, the -1b airframe was identical to the Kawasaki Ki-61-11 Hien (Tony) with a Mitsubishi 1,500 h.p.14 cylinder radial engine replacing the Kawasaki liquid cooled in-line engine, of which there was a shortage. Most of the 118 Ki100-1b aircraft completed were assigned to the defence of the Japanese home islands. Giuseppe Picarella’s research suggests the aircraft when new was initially sent to the Kagamigahara Army Depot and accepted into the IJAAF during the first two weeks of July 1945. Aug 45 Originally thought to have been captured by American forces occupying Japan from 28th August - the origin and early history of the Museum’s aircraft was unclear for many years, although the US military authorities did allocate a number of aircraft surrendered in Japan for RAF use in Oct/Nov 45. However, research by Giuseppe Picarella (Aeroplane February 2006 pp.70 – 75) seems to have confirmed this airframe’s origins. It appears to have been one of the 24 aircraft found at Tan Son Nhut (Saigon) airfield in what was then French Indo-China, and was in serviceable condition. Japanese ferry pilot Sergeant Y.
