Sunday 16 May 2021 and Sunday 23 May 2021: Southbound closure of , – Stagecoach Services 3, 4, 13, 16, 23, E1, E2 and E6

Sunderland City Council have confirmed that Wearmouth Bridge will be closed southbound on Sunday 16 May and Sunday 23 May between 7am and 7pm for essential bridge inspections and maintenance works.

During the southbound closure Stagecoach services will operate as below:

Service 3 from towards Farringdon: Will operate via normal route as far as Southwick, then via Southwick Road as far east as the Queens Road Link Road, before then running non-stop via Queens Road, , New Road, Trimdon Street, Silksworth Row, St.Marys Way, West Wear Street, then normal routes and stops from Bedford Street/ John Street. As a result of the diversion, eastbound bus stops on Southwick Road (to the east of Queen’s Road link road), and southbound at Wheatsheaf, will not be observed.

Service 3 from Farringdon towards Hylton Castle: Will be able to operate via normal route and stops.

Service 4 from Downhill towards Doxford Park: Will operate via normal route as far as Southwick, then via Southwick Road as far east as the Queens Road Link Road, before then running non-stop via Queens Road, Queen Alexandra Bridge, Pallion New Road, Trimdon Street, Silksworth Row, St.Marys Way, West Wear Street, then normal routes and stops from Bedford Street/ John Street. As a result of the diversion, eastbound bus stops on Southwick Road (to the east of Queen’s Road link road), and southbound at Wheatsheaf, will not be observed.

Service 4 from Doxford Park towards Downhill: Will be able to operate via normal route and stops.

Service 13 from Town End Farm towards Doxford Park: Will operate via normal route as far as Southwick, then via Southwick Road as far east as the Queens Road Link Road, before then running non-stop via Queens Road, Queen Alexandra Bridge, Pallion New Road, Trimdon Street, Silksworth Row, St.Marys Way, West Wear Street, then normal routes and stops from Bedford Street/ John Street. As a result of the diversion, eastbound bus stops on Southwick Road (to the east of Queen’s Road link road), and southbound at Wheatsheaf, will not be observed.

Service 13 from Doxford Park towards Town End Farm: Will be able to operate via normal route and stops.

Service 16 from Red House Estate towards Hastings Hill: Will operate via normal route as far as Southwick, then via Southwick Road as far east as the Queens Road Link Road, before then running non-stop via Queens Road, Queen Alexandra Bridge, Pallion New Road, Trimdon Street, Silksworth Row, St.Marys Way, West Wear Street, then normal routes and stops from Bedford Street/ John Street. As a result of the diversion, eastbound bus stops on Southwick Road (to the east of Queen’s Road link road), and southbound at Wheatsheaf, will not be observed.

Service 16 from Hastings Hill towards Red House Estate: Will be able to operate via normal route and stops.

Service 23: Due to unavoidable time constraints associated with the length of the pronounced diversionary routes, service 23 will only be able to operate between Thorney Close and Sunderland City Centre until around 1900. In the city centre area, buses will also be unable to serve John Street or Fawcett Street, and will instead be terminating on Holmeside. Customers are therefore recommended to use this bus stop. Diverted Services E1, E2, E6 will provide partial alternatives for customers travelling to and from Wheatsheaf, Fulwell Road, Blue Bell, and Seaburn Dene Estate.

Service E1 from to Sunderland: Will operate via normal route to Dundas Street. Buses will then be allowed to exceptionally turn right into North Bridge Street, then continue via Southwick Road, then non-stop via Kier Hardy Way, Queens Road, Queen Alexandra Bridge, Pallion New Road, Trimdon Street, Silksworth Row, St.Marys Way, West Wear Street, then normal route and stops via Bedford Street/ John Street to Fawcett Street. As a result of the diversion, buses will arrive in the city centre about 10 minutes later than normal.

Service E1 from Sunderland to South Shields: Will be able to operate via normal route and stops.

Service E2 from South Shields to Sunderland: Will operate via normal route to Newcastle Road. Buses will then be diverted via Southwick Road, then non-stop via Kier Hardy Way, Queens Road, Queen Alexandra Bridge, Pallion New Road, Trimdon Street, Silksworth Row, St.Marys Way, West Wear Street, then normal route via Bedford Street/ John Street to Fawcett Street. As a result of the diversion, buses will arrive in the city centre about 10 minutes later than normal. Please note, southbound buses will also be unable to stop at Wheatsheaf, with the closest alternative bus stop being located near Tesco.

Service E2 from Sunderland to South Shields: Will be able to operate via normal route and stops.

Service E6 from South Shields to Sunderland: Will operate via normal route to Dundas Street.
