In 2016, the carried on its task of promoting and broadening awareness of, and contact with, the and culture abroad, but in addition to that it was a year of changes: the new management team made the decision to begin placing greater focus on the Mediterranean region and carry out some of its activities in countries that hitherto have had little or no contact with Catalan culture. Thus, North Africa, Turkey, the Middle East, Greece and Italy have become strategic areas in the Institut Ramon Llull’s mission. Another significant and positive change was the Government of the Balearic Island’s reincorporation into the Institut Ramon Llull’s governing bodies that have given their full support to cultural agents actively working in the Balearic performing and visual arts world in order to expand the international reach of Catalan culture, just as the Institut Ramon Llull has always done with the Catalan language and literature from the Islands.

As regards the university network of Catalan studies abroad, 150 universities around the world continue to offer courses in Catalan Language and Culture. During the 2015-2016 academic year, 88 of those received a grant from the Institute Ramon Llull to guarantee their ongoing teaching activity. Of note among those is Masaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic) which established a Degree in Catalan Language and Literature, making a total of 19 universities that offer specialized Catalan studies. The number of IRL grant-recipient universities dropped to 87 in the 2016-2017 academic year, due to a reduction in Catalan course offerings at Monash University (Australia) and the New Sorbonne University- III. Both are clear examples of the challenges the subject area of philology has faced overall throughout the world.

Turning to the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, mention must be made of ’s participation, for the third year running, in the Venice Biennale of Architecture with the project “Aftermath_Catalonia in Venice” by archi- tects Jaume Prat, Jelena Prokopljevi´c and Isaki Lacuesta. Other important activities were the Antoni Tàpies exhibition in Toulouse; support for the international Enric Granados Commemorative Year, with concerts in in New York and London; the Catalan focus at the Marseille and Avignon festivals, the latter with the project “Avignon à la Catalane”; and other events which took place in Berlin, Milan and Birmingham. In terms of the international promotion of film works from Catalonia, we cannot overlook the participation of Catalan films and their directors at festivals including Cannes, Rotterdam, New York, Paris, Valparaiso, London, Buenos Aires, Guadalajara (Mexico) and Sao Paolo.

The promotion of Catalan authors and literary works, in the hands of the Department of Literature and the Humanities, includes the Institute Ramon Llull’s active participation in six international book fairs (Paris, London, , Warsaw, Los Angeles and Frankfurt) to broaden the outreach of Catalan authors and literary works and encourage their translation into other languages. To this end, 68 grants were awarded focusing on writers Jaume Cabré, Ramon Llull, Rafel Nadal and Marta Rojals.

The year 2016 coincided with the 700th anniversary of the death of Ramon Llull, the most universal figure in and so we organized many of the commemorative events, most of them held outside of Catalonia, with special mention of those taking place in , Algeria and Israel, with the simultaneous presentation of the exhibition, “The Ineffable Truth: The Book of the Lover and the Beloved, by Ramon Llull,” which traveled to various universities in Germany, France and England
