[email protected]; [email protected] Abstract. The genus Steinmanella Crickmay is recorded in several Lower Cretaceous marine units of the Neuquén Basin. It is particularly abundant at the transition between the Vaca Muerta and Mulichinco formations. This paper presents a taxonomic revision of this fauna, discusses the stratigraphic range of each species, and describes and interprets the associated lithofacies based on detailed field sections, newly collected specimens and revision of previous fossil collections. Four sections were measured in northern Neuquén comprising the upper beds of the Vaca Muerta Formation and the lower ones of the Mulichinco Formation. The Steinmanella fauna was dated accurately on the basis of a precise ammonoid zonation. The species were found in the Neocomites wichmanni and Lissonia riveroi zones of early Valanginian age. Specimens were collected in situ from dark grey shales, alternating siltstones, wackestones and mudstones, and rudstones. Three species were identified: Steinmanella curacoensis (Weaver), S. quintucoensis (Weaver), and S. subquadrata sp. nov. Steinmanella curacoensis has an oval outline, poor demarcation of carinae, flank and corselet ribs partially intercalated at the median part of the valve, and oval escutcheon. -

Nonetheless, the early Miocene fossil record of low-latitude vertebrates is scarce; hence, crocodylians remain poorly known in the region. The Castillo Formation, located in the northwest of Venezuela, preserves an interesting vertebrate fauna with a well-constrained late early Miocene age. Previous work dealing with crocodylians of this formation only recorded three taxa: the gavialoid Siquisiquesuchus venezuelensis and Gryposuchus sp. and indeterminate alligatoroid remains. New cranial and mandibular material recently recovered from the Castillo Formation allows us to document four previously unrecognised alligatoroid forms: Purussaurus sp., Caiman sp., an indeterminate caimanine and an indeterminate alligatoroid. With six taxa, the crocodylian assemblage reveals a previously undocumented relatively high taxonomic diversity in the early Miocene. The Castillo crocodylians show a broad range of morphological disparity and body sizes ranging from small (2.5 m–62 kg) to large (7.5 m–1600 kg) taxa. Thus, crocodylian niche partition, as well as the abundance and variety of resources and environmental heterogeneity of aquatic ecosystems in South America, were already established by at least the early Miocene. -

Here, we present sedimentological and palaeontological data collected by the German- Tanzanian Tendaguru Expedition 2000 in an attempt to reconstruct the palaeo-ecosystems of the Tendaguru Beds at their type locality. Our reconstructions are based on sedimentological data and on a palaeoecological analysis of macroinverte- brates, microvertebrates, plant fossils and microfossils (ostracods, foraminifera, charophytes, palynomorphs). In addition, we included data from previous expeditions, particularly those on the dinosaur assemblages. The environmental model of the Tendaguru Beds presented herein comprises three broad palaeoenvironmental units in a marginal marine setting: (1) Lagoon-like, shallow marine environments above fair weather wave base and with evidence of tides and storms. These formed behind barriers such as ooid bar and siliciclastic sand bar complexes and were generally subject to minor salinity fluctuations. (2) Extended tidal flats and low-relief coastal plains. These include low-energy, brackish coastal lakes and ponds as well as pools and small fluvial channels of coastal plains in which the large dinosaurs were buried. Since these environments apparently were, at best, poorly vegetated, the main feeding grounds of giant sauropods must have been elsewhere. -

Based on data of the German-Tanzanian Tenda- guru Expedition 2000 and previous studies, and in accordance with the international stratigraphic guide, we raise the Tendaguru Beds to formational rank and recognise six members (from bottom to top): Lower Dinosaur Member, Nerinella Member, Middle Dinosaur Member, Indotrigonia africana Member, Upper Dinosaur Member, and Ruti- trigonia bornhardti-schwarzi Member. We characterise and discuss each member in de- tail in terms of derivation of name, definition of a type section, distribution, thickness, lithofacies, boundaries, palaeontology, and age. The age of the whole formation appar- ently ranges at least from the middle Oxfordian to the Valanginian through Hauterivian or possibly Aptian. The Tendaguru Formation constitutes a cyclic sedimentary succes- sion, consisting of three marginal marine, sandstone-dominated depositional units and three predominantly coastal to tidal plain, fine-grained depositional units with dinosaur remains. -

ACT A PAL A EON T 0 LOG ICA POLONICA ---- Vol. 22 1977 Nr.3 HALINA PUGACZEWSKA " ADDITIONAL STUDIES ON THE JURASSIC TRIGONIIDAE OF POLAND Abstract. - Eleven trigoniid species of the genera Trigonia Bruguiere, MyophoreHa Bayle and Rutitrigonia van Hoepen, including one new species, R. skorkovensis. sp.n., are described from the Jur~ssic of Poland. The representatives of the genus Ruti trigonia are reported for the first time fro'm the Lower Kimmeridgian of Poland which markedly increases the stratigraphic and geographic range of that genus hit herto considered as limited to the Upper Kimmeridgian - Upper Cretaceous of the Phillippines, Japan and the souther.n hemisphere. INTRODUCTION The studies on Polish trigoniids carried out by the present author first covered the material from the Dogger of L~czyca, Polish Lowlands (Pugaczewska 1976). The present paper presents the results of studies on trigoniids from the Bajocian - Upper Callovian of southern Poland, Bat honian - Kimmeridgian of the Mesozoic margins of the Holy Cross Mts, Upper Oxfordian - Lower Kimmeridgian of western Pomerania and Cal lovian of glacial drift from :Luk6w in the Polish Lowlands (fig. 1). The difference between the assemblages here studied and that from the Dog ger of L~czyca concerns the lack of the genus Vaugonia Crickmay in the former. The genus Rutitrigonia van Hoepen, represented here by R. scor covensis sp.n. was hitherto known from the Upper Kimmeridgian and Cretaceous of Africa, Philippines and. Japan; its record from the Lower Kimmeridgian of the Holy Cross Mts indicates that its stratigraphic and geographic ranges are wider than it was previously assumed. -
