Irish et al. Parasites & Vectors (2016) 9:559 DOI 10.1186/s13071-016-1848-z RESEARCH Open Access A review of the mosquito species (Diptera: Culicidae) of Bangladesh Seth R. Irish1*, Hasan Mohammad Al-Amin2, Mohammad Shafiul Alam2 and Ralph E. Harbach3 Abstract Background: Diseases caused by mosquito-borne pathogens remain an important source of morbidity and mortality in Bangladesh. To better control the vectors that transmit the agents of disease, and hence the diseases they cause, and to appreciate the diversity of the family Culicidae, it is important to have an up-to-date list of the species present in the country. Original records were collected from a literature review to compile a list of the species recorded in Bangladesh. Results: Records for 123 species were collected, although some species had only a single record. This is an increase of ten species over the most recent complete list, compiled nearly 30 years ago. Collection records of three additional species are included here: Anopheles pseudowillmori, Armigeres malayi and Mimomyia luzonensis. Conclusions: While this work constitutes the most complete list of mosquito species collected in Bangladesh, further work is needed to refine this list and understand the distributions of those species within the country. Improved morphological and molecular methods of identification will allow the refinement of this list in years to come. (May 2010) Michelle Renée Sanford, B.S.; M.S., University of California, Riverside Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Jeffery K. Tomberlin The association of olfactory information with a resource is broadly known as olfactory-based associative learning. From an ecological perspective, associative learning can reduce search time for resources and fine tune responses to changing biotic and abiotic factors in a variable environment, which in mosquitoes has implications for pathogen transmission and vector control strategies. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the ability for olfactory-based associative learning across the major life history domains of mosquitoes. Six different experiments comprise this dissertation. The first was to evaluate the response of mosquitoes following conditioning to 5, 10 or 50% sucrose concentrations with individual level mosquito conditioning and testing and introduction of statistical analysis with binary logistic regression.

SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA).

The contents of each chapter generally reflect the special interests of the contributors. Some have presented a detailed taxonomic review of the families concerned; some have referred the readers to standard taxonomic works, in view of the breadth and complexity of the subject concerned, and have concentrated on ecological or physiological aspects; others have chosen to review insects of a specific set of habitats.

  • Potential Breeding Sites and Abundance of Filariasis Vector Mosquitoes in Buton District, Southeast Sulawesi Province
Wigati et al (2021): Potential breeding filariasis vector Jan 2021 Vol. 24 Issue 01 Potential breeding sites and abundance of filariasis vector mosquitoes in buton district, Southeast Sulawesi Province Raden Ajeng Wigati1*, Mujiyono Mujiyono1, Nurhidayati Nurhidayati1, Siti Diniarsih2, Hening Triandika3, Setyo Sulistyono3 1Institute of Vector and Reservoir Control Research and Development, Salatiga 2Biolaska Study Club, Biology Department of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta 3Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Yogyakarta State University (UNY) *Corresponding author: Raden Ajeng Wigati Institute of Vector and Reservoir Control Research and Development National Institute of Health Research and Development Ministry of Health, Hasanudin 123, Salatiga 50721 Central Java, Indonesia Telephone number/Fax : (0298)-327096/ (0298)-322604 Email address: [email protected] Abstract Background: Lymphatic filariasis is one of tropical diseases, transmitted by mosquitoes. It is important to know the distribution, ecology, and biology of mosquitoes that depend on the genus and species. High mosquito populations are associated with the availability of mosquito breeding sites. Not all breeding sites are clearly visible to humans. Some species prefer temporary water bodies, while others prefer more permanent ones. Potential habitat is a major factor of the diversity and abundance of vector mosquito populations in Buton Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. Aims: The study aimed to determine mosquitos’ abundance and describe mosquitoes breeding sites. Methods: Tools used for collecting mosquitos’ larvae were mosquito dipper, aquatic nets, and larvae pipette. The survey was performed in two filariasis-endemic villages, which were Bonelalo and Mabulugo with explorative descriptive methods. Results: Based on the results, there are nine types of mosquito breeding sites in two villages, namely ditches, wellsprings, river banks, rice fields, puddles, coconut shells, irrigation channels, mangroves, and estuary.

Wolff* and Jeffrey A. Riffell* ABSTRACT behaviors. However, there are significant gaps in our knowledge Mosquitoes are best known for their proclivity towards biting humans about the degree to which various types of plasticity and learning and transmitting bloodborne pathogens, but there are over 3500 contribute to host preferences. One clue comes from epidemiological species, including both blood-feeding and non-blood-feeding taxa. analyses of disease vectors, including mosquitoes, suggesting that The diversity of host preference in mosquitoes is exemplified by the only 20% of a host population can account for 80% of transmission feeding habits of mosquitoes in the genus Malaya that feed on ant potential (Woolhouse et al., 1997). This implies that, within a host regurgitation or those from the genus Uranotaenia that favor species, a subset of individuals is attracting more mosquitoes than the amphibian hosts. Host preference is also by no means static, but is rest (Kelly, 2001). One explanation for this heterogeneity is that characterized by behavioral plasticity that allows mosquitoes to sensory cues emitted from hosts might be highly variable within a switch hosts when their preferred host is unavailable and by learning species, and mosquito receptors are tuned to respond to only a subset host cues associated with positive or negative experiences. Here we of such cues. Another is that mosquitoes can learn and remember review the diverse range of host-preference behaviors across the sensory information associated with the best (and worst) hosts and family Culicidae, which includes all mosquitoes, and how adaptations change their behavior based on experience.

  • Current Arboviral Threats and Their Potential Vectors in Thailand
pathogens Review Current Arboviral Threats and Their Potential Vectors in Thailand Chadchalerm Raksakoon 1 and Rutcharin Potiwat 2,* 1 Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University, Bangkok 10900, Thailand; [email protected] 2 Department of Medical Entomology, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok 10400, Thailand * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: Arthropod-borne viral diseases (arboviruses) are a public-health concern in many regions of the world, including Thailand. This review describes the potential vectors and important human and/or veterinary arboviruses in Thailand. The medically important arboviruses affect humans, while veterinary arboviruses affect livestock and the economy. The main vectors described are mosquitoes, but other arthropods have been reported. Important mosquito-borne arboviruses are transmitted mainly by members of the genus Aedes (e.g., dengue, chikungunya, and Zika virus) and Culex (e.g., Japanese encephalitis, Tembusu and West Nile virus). While mosquitoes are important vectors, arboviruses are transmitted via other vectors, such as sand flies, ticks, cimicids (Family Cimi- cidae) and Culicoides. Veterinary arboviruses are reported in this review, e.g., duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV), Kaeng Khoi virus (KKV), and African horse sickness virus (AHSV). During arbovirus outbreaks, to target control interventions appropriately, it is critical to identify the vector(s) involved and their ecology. Knowledge of the prevalence of these viruses, and the potential for viral infections to co-circulate in mosquitoes, is also important for outbreak prediction. Keywords: emerging infectious diseases; arboviruses; vector; Aedes spp.; veterinary Citation: Raksakoon, C.; Potiwat, R. 1.
