8261 ALBURY HISTORY SOCIETY: RECORDS, (1565)-2006

Provenance

Deposited by Mr R Casbard, outgoing chairman of Albury History Society, in January 2008.

Introduct ion

Albury History Society was established in 1971 as the result of a growing interest in the preservation of the parish's records following a well-received talk on the history of Albury by Miss Helen Lloyd. Dr Maurice Burton chaired the society's first meeting in the village hall on 8 March 1971. The president of the society is the Duke of Northumberland.

The records

This collection comprises records accumulated by members of Albury History Society that cover all aspects of life in the parish of Albury, including Brook, Farley Green, Farley Heath, Little and . The records include papers relating to Albury parish churches and the Apostolic Catholic Church; local charities, schools, businesses and organisations. The numerous papers of three of Albury History Society's key members - Maurice Burton, Helen Lloyd and William Baverstock Day - and of earlier local historian, Olive Heath, are listed in their own sub-series but also appear in other parts of the archive. The collection contains many donations from Albury residents.

Arrangement

Many of the records were originally arranged in numbered bundles and contained typed or handwritten content lists which did not necessarily correspond with the actual contents. In many cases, no dates were assigned to items, so estimates have been made. Where possible, the arrangement has been kept; otherwise, cross-referencing has been made to associated records.

8261/2/1 THE OLD PARISH CHURCH, ALBURY (1836) -1990S

The old parish church of St Peter and St Paul in Albury Park dates from Saxon and Norman times. By the early 19th century, it had fallen into disrepair and was increasingly isolated from its parishioners, most of whom had moved to the hamlet of Weston Street (the current site of Albury village).

In 1839, Henry Drummond applied to the Bishop of Winchester for the closure of the old church and offered to build a new church at Weston Street. The old church was closed by an Act of Parliament in 1840, and the last service was held in December 1841.

In 1921, a service took place at the Old Church on the Sunday closest to Midsummer Day, and this has become an annual event. See also the Old Church Evening, organised by Albury History Society (8261/1/2/4).

12

Since 1974, the old church has been maintained by the Redundant Churches Fund for preservation as a building of outstanding historic appeal and architectural merit. See also 8261/9/3/28: correspondence relating to mediaeval wall painting in Albury Old Church.

8261/3 ALBURY CHARITIES (1586) -1989

From the 16th century the poor of Albury benefited from several charities established by local benefactors, including Alice Polsted, Henry Smith, Risbridger and the Duncumb family. The charities were administered by the parish churchwardens and overseers of the poor. In 1923, many of these charities were incorporated into Albury United Charities, although they generally retained their separate identities.

8261/3/1 HENRY SMITH'S CHARITY 1628 -1878

Henry Smith was a London salt merchant who purchased land around the country. His charity was established to provide relief for the 'aged or infirm poor, married persons having more children than their labour can maintain, poor orphans, such poor as keep themselves and families to labour'. Albury was one of the parishes to benefit from his bequest.

8261/3/2 DUNCUMB CHARITIES 1710 -1967

The Duncumb family lived in Weston, Albury and Shere and were prominent in local affairs in the 16th and 17th centuries. George Duncomb, who became Rector of Albury in 1691, left £1.16s per year 'to be given in bread to the poor from Weston'. Charity Duncumb bequeathed income from local land to buy and distribute loaves amongst the poor of Albury.

In 1705, the will of Olave Duncombe, widow of Henry Duncombe of Weston, established a charity which provided the poor children of Albury with apprenticeships. For other records relating to the charity, see GUHT/50/- and BR/OC/4/3/2.

8261/5 ALBURY SCHOOLS 1863 -1987

8261/5/1 ALBURY NATIONAL SCHOOLS (LATER 1863-1974 ALBURY CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL)

The Albury school was founded in 1832 and, a year later, the rector of Albury, the Rev Hugh McNeile applied to the National Society for assistance in building a schoolhouse. The boys had used a room belonging to Henry Drummond but on his conversion to the Catholic Apostolic faith, he refused to continue to rent the room for use as a school under Church of England teachings; the girls had been taught in an adapted barn on glebe land.

Permission was given for a new school to be built on glebe land for 70 boys and 80 girls in two rooms. However, the building continually suffered from damp floors and mildew so, in 1895, the school was moved to the drier and more elevated area of Albury Heath. The new mixed school was bestowed by the Duke of Northumberland and built by the men of Albury Estate.

In 1975, despite a campaign by Albury residents, Surrey County Council Education Committee closed Albury Church of England Primary School due to falling pupil numbers.

The manor of Weston (also known as Weston ) covers the area occupied by the current Albury village, a hamlet once known as Weston Street. Lords of the manor included members of the Weston, Slyfield, Eliot, Holman and Duncombe families.

In the early 18th century, the manor was sold to the Godschall family. On the death of the Rev Samuel Man Godschall in 1821, the manor was sold to Henry Drummond, who already owned the manor of Albury. For a comprehensive history of the two manors, see the introduction to collection ref. 1322: The Duke of Northumberland's Surrey Manors: records, 1390 -1937.

8261/6/2/ WESTON HOUSE, ALBURY EARLY 19TH CENT -1988

Weston House was the seat of the lords of the manor of Weston. A Palladian-style villa was built in the early 18th century and owned by the Godschall family from 1729 to 1821. [For papers of the Godschall Family of Weston House, Albury, 1638-c.1830, see G85/14- and G85/15.]

The house was demolished by Henry Drummond in 1830, and replaced by a thatched dower house which was later destroyed by fire. The house was rebuilt in 1854 with 17 tall, clustered chimney stacks [possibly by Pugin]. Many of the records in this sub-series were collected by Dr Maurice Burton who lived at Weston House from 1958 to 1992.

8261/6/3 WESTON YARD AND PIGEON HOUSE (1885) -1987

Dating from c.1550, the Pigeon House is situated in Weston Yard, originally the farmyard of the Manor of Weston, and more recently part of the Albury Estate. By the mid- 20th century the octagonal, brick-built structure, had fallen into a state of disrepair. Championed by Maurice Burton, plans to restore the pigeon house were first discussed in the early 1960s. Although the owners, Albury Estates, were unable to fund the restoration, Dr Burton and his family raised the required monies which exceeded £10,000.

Work began in 1979 and was completed a year later. The Pigeon House was officially opened by Tony Hart on 18 October 1980, and Maurice Burton received a Civic Trust award in 1982 in recognition of his work. See also papers of Maurice Burton, 8261/9/5/- and 8261/6/2/9.

8261/6/4 ALBURY HOUSE AND MILL 1787 -1984

Albury House and Mill were thought to be under single ownership until the late 18th century. The original mill, a timber-framed construction powered by the and which served the manor of Weston, dated back to 1255. Whilst under the ownership of John Cooke, the mill was burnt down by a labourer, James Warner, in 1830. Warner was sentenced to death. The mill was rebuilt, and in 1886 Henry Cooke sold it to the Duke of Northumberland. In 1946, Albury Mill was leased by E H Ellis who purchased the mill in 1959, and Albury House in 1959. A house has been on the site since the 13th century and part of the current house dates from the 17th century. Albury House was notable for being owned by Anthony Devis (1729-1816), a landscape artist known locally as the 'man mushroom' because he was the first person in Albury to be seen carrying an umbrella or parasol.

33

In 1812, Anthony Devis sold Albury House to his niece, Ellin Devis, on condition that he lived there for the rest of his life. In 1820, Ellin Devis left the house to her niece, also named Ellin, the mother of Martin Tupper, philospher and poet. Tupper lived at Albury House until his death in 1889. See also 8261/9/1. More recently, the house was the home of Olive Heath. See also Albury History Society correspondence objecting to planned demolition of Albury House, 8261/1/1/1.

8261/7/3 FINCH FAMILY 1976 -2000

Following a fire in 1697, Albury Park mansion was rebuilt by its owner, Heneage Finch, later the 1st Earl of Aylesford and Solicitor-General to King Charles II. In 1782, the 4th Earl of Aylesford, sold the estate to his brother Captain William Clement Finch (1758-1794), a naval captain who had amassed a fortune through the capture of a Spanish ship. 37

Captain Finch wanted to enclose the park and obtained magistrates' orders in 1784-5 to close the old road between Albury and Shere. He enclosed the village green and incorporated part of the churchyard into the park grounds, forcing some villagers to move to the nearby hamlet of Weston Street which became what is now the current village of Albury.

8261/7/4 HENRY DRUMMOND (1786-1860) (1830) -2002

Henry Drummond (1786-1860), MP, banker and writer, bought Albury Park in 1819 and the manor of Weston in 1830, thus combining the two manors. He commisioned the construction of the new parish church in Albury in 1842, and engaged Augustus Welby Pugin to design a mortuary chapel for his family within the walls of the old parish church. His daughter, Louisa, married Algernon Percy, Lord Lovaine, later 6th Duke of Northumberland.

In the 1820s, Drummond became an adherent of Irvingism, which led him and his associates to establish their own Catholic Apostolic church, for which see 8261/8/-. Drummond was MP for West Surrey from 1847 until his death in 1860. For papers of the Drummond family of Albury, 1826 -1843, see 5127/ -.

8261/7/6 ALBURY PARK MANSION 1804 -2003

The earliest reference to a house at Albury Park can be found in John Aubrey's 'History of Surrey' which contains an engraving of a print by W Hollar in 1645. During the latter part of the 17th century, much of the original house was demolished to make way for a new building, designed by John Evelyn for the . In 1697, the house was largely destroyed by fire and rebuilt by the Earl of Aylesford.

In 1800, Sir John Soane was commissioned to make improvements which included the creation of a new library. In 1819, the property was purchased by Henry Drummond who employed Augustus Pugin to remodel the exterior, including the design of tall brick chimneys of various designs. The work was undertaken between 1846 and 1852. On Drummond's death in 1860, the mansion and estate passed through his daughter Louisa to the Percy family. In 1969, Albury Park mansion was sold to Country Houses Assocation Ltd for conversion into private apartments.

8261/8 THE CATHOLIC APOSTOLIC CHURCH (1834)-1994 AT ALBURY

In the 1820s, Henry Drummond and a group of associates met to discuss the teachings of Scottish preacher, Edward Irving who belived that the Second Coming was imminent. From 1826, annual conferences were held at Albury Park and, at a prayer meeting in 1832, John Bate Cardale was called to be the first Apostle - 'the Pillar of the Apostles' - of the newly created Catholic Apostolic Church. Over the next three years, eleven others were similarly called, including Henry Drummond, and their role corresponded with that of the Apostles of the primitive church. 47

By 1834, there were seven churches in London and, in 1840, Henry Drummond paid for the construction of a Catholic Apostolic church at Albury. Known as the 'Apostles' Chapel', it was designed by architect, William McIntosh Brooks, and was first used on 4 September. Other ministries in the Catholic Apostolic Church comprised Prophets, Evangelists and Pastors. In each church, there was a chief Pastor who was given the title, 'Angel' (or Bishop).
