Sc., Department of Geological Engineering Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sevinç Özkan Altıner Co-Supervisor: Assist. Prof. Dr. Vedat Ediger September 2006, 306 pages The present study aims to investigate the foraminiferal assemblages of the recent samples in terms of abundance and diversity, to determine the bathymetrical and the geographical distributions of the foraminiferal assemblages. This study further intends to put forward the responses of foraminifers to environmental factors (e.g. bathymetry, salinity, substrate, pollution, water currents, etc.) on the distribution of foraminifers. In this manner, foraminiferal fauna has been taxonomically identified and quantitatively analyzed in the 34 grab samples distributed at depths from 18 m. to 190 m. collected from the Gulf of İskenderun. Counting 300 individuals from each sample, the relative abundances of 151 benthic foraminiferal species belonging to suborders of Rotaliina, Miliolina, Textulariina, Spirillinina and Lagenina have been determined. iv The relative abundances of samples are dominated by Ammonia tepida; Adelosina cliarensis, Nonion sp.A, Textularia bocki, Reussella spinulosa, Cribroelphidium poeyanum, Adelosina pulchella, Buccella granulata, Elphidium advenum and Nonion depressulum that are also common in the western Mediterranean. Furthermore, the Lessepsian migrants; Peneroplis pertusus, Septoloculina angulata, Septloculina rotunda, Septoloculina tortuosa, Vertebralina striata and Amphistegina lobifera are abundant in only southeastern part of the gulf. Because of complex distribution scheme of benthic foraminifers, some statistical analysis (Cluster Analysis, DCA and CCA) have been applied to relative abundance (percentage) of the most abundant, ecologically important taxa in order to visualize assemblages and their representative species. Two main clusters, mainly controlled by CaCO3 and substrate, have been obtained. It is recognized that the distribution of benthic foraminiferal assemblages are not strongly depend on depth as it expected. Anahtar Kelimeler: Bentik foraminifer, Dağılım, Çevresel faktörler, İstatistiksel yöntemler, İskenderun Körfezi. vii To My Family viii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The author wishes to express her deepest gratitude to her supervisor Assoc. • Olympian Triad
136 Olympian Triad J G R Harcling Plates 57-fJO Part I-Winter Olympus! The very name evokes imagery, divinity and soaring aspiration 'Altius' of the Olympic motto. Certainly, no other mountain in classical consciousness had a greater wealth of mythological and poetic association. And this was due in part to the religious conceptions of Ancient Greece in whose cosmography the world was created as a disc with Greece its centre and Mount Olympus-touching heaven and synonymous with it-the apex; in part to its poets and particularly Homer, the literary protagonist of the Olympians. Homer's Olympus was an imaginary paradise 'not shaken by winds, nor wet with rains, nor touched with snow'. The reality is a formidable mountain, snow-bound for six months of the year. But then, the Ancient Greeks had no real sympathy for mountains or mountain scenery. According to the Protago rean ethic, man was the measure of all things and humanism the dominant philosophy. The gods who inhabited Olympus were themselves a reflection of Man. For the Greeks the magic of the mountains was not scenic but rather their association with the spirits of nature and particularly the Oreads-nymphs whose task it was to guide the weary traveller through the dreary upland wastes. Although Homer's Olympus was more a concept than a reality, the mountain which is indisputably identified as the home of the Gods from which Zeus despatched his thunderbolts is the great massif rising almost 3000m from the shores of the Gulf of Thermae. From time immemorial it has been an obstacle to invaders moving down from Macedonia to the plains of Thessaly and on this high stage were enacted numberless mythological dramas.

  • Strong Ground Motion Characteristics from the 17 August 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey Earthquake
BOLLETTINO DI GEOFISICA TEORICA ED APPLICATA VOL. 43, N. 1-2, PP. 37-52; MAR.-JUN. 2002 Strong ground motion characteristics from the 17 August 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquake A. AKINCI Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Roma, Italy (Received July 2, 2001; accepted December 21, 2001) Abstract - The 17 August 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquake (Mw.=.7.4, USGS) occurred in the western part of the North Anatolian Fault Zone about 80 km east of Istanbul. The mechanism of the main event was almost a pure right-lateral strike- slip, and the aftershock distribution indicates that the rupture was located toward the western end of the North Anatolian Fault Zone. The earthquake affected a wide area in the Marmara region, as well as the city of Istanbul. Most of the damage and fatalities occurred in towns located on the narrow, flat shoreline of the Sea of Marmara. Since the broken fault segment traversed the densely populated and industrialized east Marmara region, damage was enormously high. Widespread liquefactions caused bearing capacity losses and consequent foundation failu- res in the Adapazari region, as well as extensive subsidence along the shoreline in Gölcük (Gulf of Izmit) and Sapanca. The earthquake struck also the western suburbs of Istanbul, the Avcilar region, causing severe damage on buildings even though the distance from the epicenter was about 80 km. In this study, we discuss the ground motion characteristics, as well as directivity and soil effects of recorded ground acceleration of the Kocaeli earthquake. Strong-motion data were obtained from the networks managed by the Bogaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute and by the General Director of Disaster Affairs, Earthquake Research Department.

Kemer Kemer is a seaside resort and district of Antalya Province on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, 40 km (25 mil) west of the city of Antalya, on the Turkish Riviera. Kemer is on the Gulf of Antalya, 53 km (33 mi) of sea coast with the skirts of the western Taurus Mountains behind. The coast has the typical Mediterranean hot, dry weather and warm sea. Until the early 1980s this was a quiet rural district but today the town of Kemer and coastal villages in the district play a very important part in tourism in Turkey. Tourism in Kemer One of the major attractions of Kemer is its natural beauty; sea, mountains and pine forest combine in harmony. The shore from Beldibi to Tekirova consists of unspoilt beaches in bays of various sizes, mostly stony rather than sand. With easy transportation, good communication and other municipal services Kemer has a large proportion of the hotel bed capacity of the Antalya region, and is a comfortable and peaceful holiday coast with internationally accepted reputation, attracting large numbers of visitors from countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, and in recent years predominantly families from Russia.

  • Golfin Antalya
Golf in Antalya Golf in Belek Belek, one of Antalya’s most popular holiday centres, has become not only a brand name in Turkey, but one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world thanks to its unsurpassed natural beauty and perfect climate. Located 30 kilometers from Antalya, Belek has a seventeen-kilometer coastline lined with numerous five star hotels. Since the early 1990s, Belek has offered its guests the most comfortable holiday opportunity in the Mediterranean. Among the features that make Belek such an attractive location in the region is its ease of access and the ancient cities situated nearby. The region hosted numerous civilisations throughout its thousands of years of history, and with its fertile lands has been a centre of attention in every period. Though Belek has a typical Mediterranean climate, the freshwater streams which flow from the slopes of the Taurus Mountains give it different characteristics than other Mediterranean locations. Thanks to its large sand dunes, its beaches are sheltered from the harsh effects of the sea and wind. With all these features in place, Belek offers a magnificent atmosphere, not only as a tourism centre, but as an area that contains all the distinctive Mediterranean characteristics. For many years now, Belek has been one of the foremost holiday destinations for sports tourism in our country. It owes its preeminent position in this regard to its climate, geographical location and undeniably to its committed implementation of sustainable tourism policies. Belek and its hotels are highly popular with sports clubs and cater to their needs across all sports year-round.

Proc. of middle East & North Africa Conf. For Future of Animal Wealth THE ECHINODERM FAUNA OF TURKEY WITH NEW RECORDS FROM THE LEVANTINE COAST OF TURKEY Elif Özgür1, Bayram Öztürk2 and F. Saadet Karakulak2 1Faculty of Fisheries, Akdeniz University, TR-07058 Antalya, Turkey 2İstanbul University, Faculty of Fisheries, Ordu Cad.No.200, 34470 Laleli- Istanbul, Turkey Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The echinoderm fauna of Turkey consists of 80 species (two Crinoidea, 22 Asteroidea, 18 Ophiuroidea, 20 Echinoidea and 18 Holothuroidea). In this study, seven echinoderm species are reported for the first time from the Levantine coast of Turkey. These are, five ophiroid species; Amphipholis squamata, Amphiura chiajei, Amphiura filiformis, Ophiopsila aranea, and Ophiothrix quinquemaculata and two echinoid species; Echinocyamus pusillus and Stylocidaris affinis. Turkey is surrounded by four seas with different hydrographical characteristics and Turkish Straits System (Çanakkale Strait, Marmara Sea and İstanbul Strait) serve both as a biological corridor and barrier between the Aegean and Black Seas. The number of echinoderm species in the coasts of Turkey also varies due to the different biotic environments of these seas. There are 14 echinoderm species reported from the Black Sea, 19 species from the İstanbul Strait, 51 from the Marmara Sea, 71 from the Aegean Sea and 42 from the Levantine coasts of Turkey. Among these species, Asterias rubens, Ophiactis savignyi, Diadema setosum, and Synaptula reciprocans are alien species for the Turkish coasts.
