136 Olympian Triad J G R Harcling Plates 57-fJO Part I-Winter Olympus! The very name evokes imagery, divinity and soaring aspiration 'Altius' of the Olympic motto. Certainly, no other mountain in classical consciousness had a greater wealth of mythological and poetic association. And this was due in part to the religious conceptions of Ancient Greece in whose cosmography the world was created as a disc with Greece its centre and Mount Olympus-touching heaven and synonymous with it-the apex; in part to its poets and particularly Homer, the literary protagonist of the Olympians. Homer's Olympus was an imaginary paradise 'not shaken by winds, nor wet with rains, nor touched with snow'. The reality is a formidable mountain, snow-bound for six months of the year. But then, the Ancient Greeks had no real sympathy for mountains or mountain scenery. According to the Protago rean ethic, man was the measure of all things and humanism the dominant philosophy. The gods who inhabited Olympus were themselves a reflection of Man. For the Greeks the magic of the mountains was not scenic but rather their association with the spirits of nature and particularly the Oreads-nymphs whose task it was to guide the weary traveller through the dreary upland wastes. Although Homer's Olympus was more a concept than a reality, the mountain which is indisputably identified as the home of the Gods from which Zeus despatched his thunderbolts is the great massif rising almost 3000m from the shores of the Gulf of Thermae. From time immemorial it has been an obstacle to invaders moving down from Macedonia to the plains of Thessaly and on this high stage were enacted numberless mythological dramas. -

PCorresponding author 1ne¨ eR.Zu« hlke): e-mail: [email protected] This study aimed to identify the e¡ects of di¡erent sieve mesh-sizes on processing time, the number of species retained, diversity measures and multivariate community analysis in the North Sea. Samples were collected at 63 sites throughout the North Sea and washed through two successive sieves, 10-mm and 5-mm mesh respectively. Processing time for whole samples 15- and 10-mm fraction) averaged 91 Æ25 min compared with 55 Æ16 min for the 10-mm mesh fraction. Altogether 40% of free-living species and 9% of attached species were recorded exclusively in the 5-mm fraction. The majority of these species were rare. Spatial gradients of species diversity and community structure were identical, independent ofthe mesh-size used. Multivariate community analysis showed no signi¢cant di¡erence between descriptions ofcommunity structure based on fauna from 10-mm or 5-mm mesh. The use ofcoarser sieving mesh would save time and money, ifthe aims ofan epibenthic survey were to describe broad patterns ofcommunity structure and relative diversity. It would be possible to process approximately 50% more samples, ifthe time saved with 10-mm mesh were allocated to additional sampling. However, ifinformation on single species is required, then sorting with the ¢ner sieve mesh will yield crucial information. -

STAHEL Zoologiscbes Museum der Universitlit Zi~ricb; Ziirich, Scbweiz ABSTRACT: Environmental conditions affecting the occurrence of Astropecten aranciacus (Asteroidea, Echinodermata). In shallow water off the north coast of Sardinia (western Mediterranean) the frequency of occurrence of the starfish Astropecten aranciacus was recorded in 70 sample areas of 25 ms each. Four environmental factors, namely depth, average sand grain diameter, number of mollusc species, and number of individuals of the genus Echino- cardium proved to be related to the abundance of A. aranciacus. The sediment contained many species, each, as a rule, being present at low abundance. The molluscs found and their sizes are listed. Update of “Interpretation Manual of European Union Habitats” COASTAL AND HALOPHYTIC HABITATS Open sea and tidal areas 1110 Sandbanks which are slightly covered by sea water all the time PAL.CLASS.: 11.125, 11.22, 11.31 1. Definition: Sandbanks are elevated, elongated, rounded or irregular topographic features, permanently submerged and predominantly surrounded by deeper water. They consist mainly of sandy sediments, but larger grain sizes, including boulders and cobbles, or smaller grain sizes including mud may also be present on a sandbank. Banks where sandy sediments occur in a layer over hard substrata are classed as sandbanks if the associated biota are dependent on the sand rather than on the underlying hard substrata. “Slightly covered by sea water all the time” means that above a sandbank the water depth is seldom more than 20 m below chart datum. Sandbanks can, however, extend beneath 20 m below chart datum. It can, therefore, be appropriate to include in designations such areas where they are part of the feature and host its biological assemblages. 2. Characteristic animal and plant species 2.1. Vegetation: North Atlantic including North Sea: Zostera sp., free living species of the Corallinaceae family. On many sandbanks macrophytes do not occur. Central Atlantic Islands (Macaronesian Islands): Cymodocea nodosa and Zostera noltii. On many sandbanks free living species of Corallinaceae are conspicuous elements of biotic assemblages, with relevant role as feeding and nursery grounds for invertebrates and fish. On many sandbanks macrophytes do not occur. Baltic Sea: Zostera sp., Potamogeton spp., Ruppia spp., Tolypella nidifica, Zannichellia spp., carophytes. -
