• GARRISON PETAWAWA - TRAINING GROUND OF THE WARRIORS • Seamless Canada initiative progresses with provinces and territories during the Ottawa symposium ... continued from previous page National Defence launched Seamless Canada on June 27 to improve the coordination of relocation services across the country, when CAF members and their families move to a WINTER DRIVE INTO different province or territory. The Ottawa symposium fo- cussed on finding ways to streamline and enhance services THE NEW across governments on issues specific to CAF members and their families. SALES YEAR WITH CAF members are required to relocate across Canada EVENT throughout their careers. A Canadian Forces Ombudsman A NEW GMC. report released in 2013 found that relocation is a major cause of stress and strain for military families, who can expect to move three times more frequently than the average civilian over the course of a member’s career in the CAF. Specific stressors include access to healthcare, employment, child care and education, which all come under provincial and ter- ritorial jurisdictions. General Jonathan H. Vance, Chief of the Defence Staff and Ms. Jody Thomas, Deputy Minister of National Defence, set the tone for the December meetings with their opening remarks. YUKON CANYON TERRAIN ACADIA “Improving services across Canada for Canadian Armed SIERRA Forces members and their families is a must,” General Vance said. “Moving is a challenging experience even in the best GET conditions, and I am committed to helping make things easier UP TO TOTAL VALUE and less stressful when they relocate across the country.” Ms. $ ON SELECT MODELS* Thomas added, “With military families moving frequently 9,000 in service of their country, relocation is absolutely one of the most difficult parts of military life.” HURRY IN, 2018 MODELS ARE ALMOST GONE! The Ottawa roundtable discussions centred on health care, spousal employment, and education and childcare. The participants also worked on shaping the governance of the Seamless Canada framework and deciding on a strategic, long-term path to improving how military families can better transition between the provinces and territories. A number of military spouses, both male and female, have also featured prominently in shaping the Seamless Canada dialogue. They spoke to the assemblies in June and again in Ottawa this month about their personal experiences with relocation and how it has affected their families over the years. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 517 donated $2,000 to the Petawawa Pantry Food Bank, which will go a long way to help feed the approximately 90 families in the area that require the Pantry’s services. The money was collected from the extremely popular Catch the Ace and a second donation of the same amount will be presented to the Pantry in January. It was important to the Legion that the Catch the Ace funds go to help the local community and this money will go towards food, upkeep and personal products that the clients might require. On Dec. 31 from 6 to 9 p.m., the Petawawa Civic Centre opened its doors to those looking to ring in the new year. The early night allows parents to spend the evening with their chil- dren, head home to put them to bed before celebrating the midnight countdown as adults. As always, the event was packed with a variety of free activities - families could choose to skate on the arena’ or take a little break to watch magician Steven Anthony perform. Off the ice, Mr. Dimples provided his balloon creatures to hundreds of children and Margaret Phillips from Infinite Arts added a bit of pizzazz to partygo- ers with her award-winning face painting. Ry-J’s Climbing Adventures was also on hand with inflatables and games to keep participants active. For those willing to brave the cold, horse-drawn sleigh rides were offered by 710 Excursions of Ladysmith, Qc. After a bracing cold ride and a skate around the ice, kids could then boogie down with DJ Murray Rutz until the clock struck nine and a cascade of balloons fell on them for their early New Years countdown. (Left) Nathan, 8, and Arin Crinnion enjoy some time on the ice. Like many area families, get- ting the chance to skate in the arena for free was the perfect way to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
