SPOLETO FESTIVAL USA 2014 │ OPEN STAGE DOOR OFFERINGS OPERA Kát’a Kabanová Sottile Theatre, 44 George Street Thursday, May 29 - 8:00 PM Friday, June 6 - 7:00 PM Sweeping in scope, Kát’a Kabanová is regarded as one of the great operas of the 20th century. Janáček’s shimmering music evoking the Volga River symbolizes the foreboding freedom that both attracts and terrifies Kát’a. Matched with a spineless husband and isolated by her tyrannical mother-in-law, Kát’a finds both freedom and excruciating guilt in the arms of another man. This glorious yet gritty score tells the turbulent story in moving scenes that undulate with fate and family. Garry Hynes, the Tony Award-winning artistic director of Irish theater company Druid, will make her directorial debut in opera, bringing her immense skill for storytelling to a new discipline; Anne Manson, who led the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra concert in 2012, will conduct this tale of love, betrayal, and ultimate consequences. Sung in Czech with English supertitles. Facing Goya Dock Street Theatre, 135 Church Street Saturday, June 7 - 8:00 PM Composed by Michael Nyman Libretto by Victoria Hardie Directed by Ong Keng Sen Conducted by John Kennedy An opera for the 21st century, Facing Goya jumps from location to location, zig-zagging through three centuries mixing sci-fi, art history, and a little conspiracy theory to raise questions about who we are and how expectations factor into how we treat each other. Exhumed for repatriation to Spain in the late 19th century, Romantic painter Francisco Goya’s body was found without a head.

But there were also myriad musical highs had over four glorious cloudless days at Adelaide’s salubrious Botanic Park, all helping to make WOMADelaide 2018 (March 9-12) a truly wondrous experience. Like, for example, the nightly spectaculars provided by the 43 virtuosic Rajasthani singers and instrumentalists from three generations that played in various tantalising permutations leading up to a tumultuous ensemble nale with all microphones switched on and light bulbs blazing. Arrayed in a 4-storey red jewel-box stage construct shipped from India and re-assembled (over one day) in a far corner of the park, The Manganiyar Seduction produced an unparalleled visual and musical experience. The performance of the world’s nest female sitarist Anoushka Shankar, eight years after playing here with her revered father, the late Ravi, combined with the aforementioned shows and a velvety warm Adelaide evening to make Friday one of the most memorable opening nights in the festival’s 26-year history.

AArrttiissaannss ddee LL’’IImmaaggiinnaaiirree 30 ans du Cirque du Soleil ““ CCiirrqquuee iinn TTrraannssiittiioonn”” PART FOUR: 1999 - 2004 155 ““ CCiirrqquuee iinn TTrraannssiittiioonn”” PART FOUR: 1999 - 2004 Can Cirque du Soleil go on without Dragone? "There's no reason why the circus can't change with the times." – Guy Caron At the end of 1998, the creative team behind so many of Cirque du Soleil's productions in the 1990s - Franco Dragone, Michel Crete and Dominique Lemieux - concluded their remarkable run of artistic and professional development with the company, leaving the creative reins to future shows in the hands of others and giving Cirque du Soleil an interesting dilemma to overcome during the first-half of the new millennium: how to move on from a very successful run of productions under the helm of Franco Dragone and his team of conceptors and show the world it could still re-invent the circus. Faced with the challenge of mounting a new show, with a new team, in a compressed period of time, Guy Laliberté turned to an old friend: Guy Caron. Since he had left Cirque in 1988, Caron had maintained friendly relations with Laliberté. In 1992, he had even directed a show called “Cirque Knie Presents Cirque du Soleil” for the Swiss National Circus, produced in collaboration with Cirque. Caron's job wasn't easy, though. He'd have to pick up the creative pieces and attempt to meet or exceed the expectations laid down by the likes of Quidam, “O” and La Nouba. Despite the challenges - or perhaps because of them - Laliberté and Caron were able to show that it was the creative juices of the whole rather than just one man that drove the company, and it was during this period of transition that Cirque du Soleil began to branch out beyond theatrical productions; Cirque would dive into the realm of motion pictures and television full-force with Journey of Man (IMAX film), Fire Within (reality series) and Solstrom (variety series).

America's News English The circus is in town Jaycees Family Circus wows them at - college Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL) - Sunday, April 30, 2006 Author: Ann Piccininni Daily Herald Correspondent Just for Saturday, Merner Field House at North Central College was turned into The Big Top. Gymnasts achieved feats of balance and grace, acrobatic stilt- walkers amazed with choreographed routines, unicyclists synchronized to perform a dance on wheels. And dogs and their trainers showed off agility and athleticism. It was the first-ever Naperville Jaycees Family Circus. As families settled into bleachers and the balcony, the smell of popcorn hung in the air and children clutched inflatable lions, elephants, monkeys, giraffes and zebras. The Pianovski family of Aurora heard about the circus through a flier circulated at Cowlishaw Elementary School, where 10-year-old Austin Pianovski is a student. "They've never been to a circus," said Austin's mother, Jennifer, seated next to her husband, Mike, and daughter Makenzie, 4. "So, we thought, why not? It's affordable." When the lights dimmed, members of the Chicago-based Mucca Pazza Astounding Circus Punk Marching Band emerged from backstage, playing drums, tuba, trombone, saxophone and accordion. Ringmaster Andrew HunzekerHesed, special events director at the Evanston-based Actors Gymnasium, introduced the school's Teen Ensemble gymnastics group and, later, members of the Windy City Canine Disc Club and their dogs. Patricia Showalter of Aurora held her daughter, Cadence, 2, on her lap as the dogs jumped to catch flying discs. Cadence's twin 9- year-old sisters, Melody and Jazzmin, sat on the floor closer to the action.
