  • When James Ford and Jas Shaw Met at Manchester University in the Late 1990S, They Never Imagined They'd End up Creating a Human Synthesiser
When James Ford and Jas Shaw met at Manchester University in the late 1990s, they never imagined they'd end up creating a human synthesiser. But in their very earliest musical experiments together, something was set in motion which would lead to one of the most unusual careers in British music: one which has seen their creative mission transform again and again, inventing entirely new formats for music-making along the way. So perhaps the weaving of rich layers of human vocal tonalities sung by The Deep Throat Choir into the techno framework of their fifth studio album Murmurations isn't quite such an unexpected turn of events. In fact, they've been connecting the human voice with electronic sound since they first founded the band Simian with Simon Lord and Alex McNaughten. Simian was, in Jas's words, about “trying to show you could make band music with songs and harmonies but be into Autechre too". Named after "Simeon", the home-made early synth rig of early electronic experimentalists The Silver Apples, the band combined Crosby, Stills & Nash harmonies with hypnotic Krautrock rhythms, cosmic analogue synthesiser swooshes and an unmistakeable clubber's sense of groove - and somehow in the middle of all that managed to find something extraordinarily accessible. They were signed to a major label subsidiary in 2000, and made two albums that stand up in their own right now. But, Jas continues, it was "just at the moment the world was into the Strokes and White Stripes and straight-ahead rock music," and their rich, baroque tapestries of song and sound didn't reach the audience their ambition and beauty deserved.

  • Gay Immigrants and Grindr: Revitalizing Queer Urban Spaces?
Gay Immigrants and Grindr: Revitalizing Queer Urban Spaces? “Gay Dance Clubs on the Wane in the Age of Grindr,” proclaimed the journalist Michael Musto in the New York Times in 2016. Musto, who has reported on gay life in New York for decades, had noticed a decline in weekly dance parties. In speaking to club promoters and performers, Musto kept hearing the same thing: people would rather meet others via the comfort of their mobile phones than in a gay space. (“Clubs have been usurped by the right swipe”; “Social media changed the landscape of going out”; “Why pay an expensive cover charge and deal with rude bouncers when you can just swipe on your iPhone?” and so forth.) Similarly, a New Orleans bartender told gay reporter Chris Staudinger: “You could ask any bartender in New Orleans whether the apps have affected business in gay bars, and they would all say yes.” Scholarly research has also pointed to Grindr (and related platforms) as troublesome technologies that might obviate the need for urban gay spaces. Grindr (founded 2009) is a smartphone-only platform that allows mostly gay men (and also queer and trans people) to connect to others in their immediate vicinity via private messages. Related geo-social apps include gay platforms like Scruff, Hornet, Growler or Chappy, or the app versions of websites like Gaydar or PlanetRomeo, and mainstream equivalents like Tinder and Happn. These geo-locative platforms challenge the idea that a “gay space” needs to be a physical space distinct from a straight space, since the “grids of the Grindr interface can be overlaid atop any space” (Roth 2016: 441).

  • Nj's Lgbt Powerlist
THE 2018 INSIDER OUT 100 NJ’S LGBT POWERLIST WE'VE COME A LONG WAY! Message from the Editor 2018 LGBT POWER Welcome to InsiderNJ’s OUT 100 Power List, a first-of-its kind-tribute to influential LGBTs in New Jersey politics. This list was a reader’s idea. My editor Max Pizarro and my General Manager Pete Oneglia green-lighted the idea so long as I promised to make it amazing. These Power Lists mean a lot to people. Making it amazing seems like the least I could do given this opportunity. P.O. Box 66 Verona, NJ 07044 [email protected] www.InsiderNJ.com WE’VE COME A LONG WAY, HAVEN’T WE? When I acquired HIV as a teenager back in 1992, you’d be hard pressed to name a single politically influential LGBT person anywhere in America, let alone 100 from a single state! Nobody was talking about gay marriage. There were no workplace protections back then, no gays in the military. What Max Pizarro we did have was a hostile government and an equally hostile Catholic Church driving our nation’s Editor-in-Chief AIDS policy. Which might explain why the life-saving AIDS “cocktail” was still years away, something [email protected] I blessedly wouldn’t need until 1998. Many listed below played a huge role taming the AIDS crisis and then delivering a raft of pro-LGBT laws in its wake. This list also includes the next generation of LGBTs already making their mark on the New Jersey political landscape. They’ve snatched the baton in a purposeful manner befitting a generation raised to dream bigger than mine ever could.
