Egypt, 1907. Two archaeologists, Bernard Grenfell and Arthur Hunt, are searching for ancient fragments of poetry and plays, next to an old rubbish heap. Until the Greek God, Apollo, descends from the skies... Apollo is furious that they have failed to unearth the fragmentary text of a lost Satyr play by Sophocles. As he forces the two papyrologists to find the lost play, Grenfell and Hunt become part of the story they have discovered. Multi-award-winning poet and playwright Tony Harrison remakes the ancient Greek original into a play for our times – and rediscovers the satyr play.

For the two weeks covered in Period 1, there were 140 productions staged at 112 venues. Writers Of the 140 productions there were: 98 written by men 70% 13 written by women 9% 22 mixed collaboration 16% (7 unknown) 5% New Writing 48 of the 140 plays were new writing (34%). Of the 48 new plays: 30 written by men 62% 8 written by women 17% 10 mixed collaboration 21% The greatest volume of new writing was shown at Fringe venues, with 31% of its programme for the specified time period featuring new writing.     ADAPTED AND DIRECTED BY KATE MCGREGOR PRODUCED BY THEATRE6 AND TALES RETOLD HHHHH “Brave, brilliant and unmissable” The Times (The Scottsboro Boys) HHHHH “Captivating” Windsor Express (Persuasion) DIRECTOR’S NOTES I’ve loved Dickens’ ‘Great Expectations’ for many years and always found myself entranced and intrigued by Miss Havisham and her adopted daughter Estella. Estella is often described as a mystery to those around her - cold, lonely and unfeeling. However, when you consider her childhood and immediate role models, it’s no wonder she has struggled to establish her own identity. Throughout the novel, Estella is kept away from the truth of her life by Pip, Jaggers and Miss Havisham and this just didn’t seem fair to me. Therefore, I wanted to write a version that put the women of ‘Great Expectations’ unapologetically front and centre. 'Estella' is about giving Estella, Molly and Miss Havisham their time in the spotlight and in doing so, releasing them from the fate of being forever underwritten and universally misunderstood. At Theatre6 we work predominantly with live actor- musicianship and this approach has been the perfect vehicle to help unlock Estella’s secrets and lay her truth bare. It’s been really exciting to fill in the gaps of Estella’s life and give her new agency. We hope that this adaptation celebrates the fascinating narratives of so many women in Victorian literature and establishes a new legacy for classic popular fiction. Director Kate McGregor Kate is Artistic Director of award-winning Theatre6 and winner of the Noel Coward Trainee Director Award at The Salisbury Playhouse. The centenary production of Stanley Houghton's classic Hindle Wakes opens at the Finborough Theatre from Tuesday, 11 September 2012 (Press Night: Thursday, 13 September 2012 at 7.30pm) for a strictly limited three-week season. It's holiday week in the Lancashire town of Hindle, just before the First World War. Fanny Hawthorn, a spirited, determined mill girl, has just returned from a weekend in Blackpool with her friend Mary Hollins. At least that's what she tells her parents. In fact, she's been spending the weekend with Alan Jeffcote, a wealthy mill owner's son who is engaged to someone else. When Fanny's parents discover the truth, they set out to ensure that Alan will do the decent thing and marry her – only to discover that Fanny has her own ideas on the matter... One of the first plays to have a working class female protagonist. Hindle Wakes was hugely controversial at the time of its writing, and is now widely acknowledged as a feminist classic.
