Fought on 30 July 1864, during the Siege of Petersburg, the Battle of the Crater, according to the National Park Service, is one of the most important events of the Civil War. The participation of African-American troops in the battle and the subsequent execution of black prisoners highlights the racial animosities that were the underpinning causes of this conflict. The goal of this project is to document the level of integrity of any archaeological resources connected with this field of conflict and to examine how far the Union troops advance beyond the mouth of the Crater. -

This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract The Barombi Mbo Maar (BMM), which is the largest maar in Cameroon, possesses about 126 m- thick well-preserved pyroclastic deposits sequence in which two successive paleosoil beds have been identified. The maar was thought to have been active a million years ago. However, layers stratigraphically separated by the identified paleosoils have been dated to shed lights on its age and to reconstruct the chronology of its past activity. The results showed that the BMM formed through three eruptive cycles: the first ~0.51 Ma ago, the second at ~0.2 Ma and the third ~0.08 Ma B.P. The ages indicate that the BMM maar-forming eruptions were younger than a million years. The findings also suggested that the maar is polygenetic. -

Overview: Meke Maar is a volcanic system which contains typically a volcanic rock mass and a crater lake up above. However the system differs from other volcanic systems with its caldera lake surrounding the volcanic mass (See pictures in Annex 2). -

They are thought to arise from the drainage or collapse of a relatively weak surficial material into an open (or widening) void in a much stronger material below. These craters have a very distinctive expression, often presenting funnel-, cone-, or bowl-shaped geometries. Analogue models of pit crater formation produce pits that typically have steep, nearly conical cross sections, but only show the surface expression of their initiation and evolution. Numerical modelling studies of pit crater formation are limited and have produced some interesting, but nonetheless puzzling, results. Presented here is a high-resolution, 2D discrete element model of weak cover (regolith) collapse into either a static or a widening underlying void. Frictional and frictional-cohesive discrete elements are used to represent a range of probable cover rheologies. Under Martian gravitational conditions, frictional-cohesive and frictional materials both produce cone- and bowl-shaped pit craters. For a given cover thickness, the specific crater shape depends on the amount of underlying void space created for drainage. -

A. REDDEN ABSTRACT Diamond-drilling at the Beecher No. 3-Black Diamond pegmatite, Ouster County, S. Dak., has provided information that modifies and supplements findings reported previously (Redden, 1959). Two zones not exposed at the surface were found during the drilling: a quartz-albite-perthite-muscovite-pegmatite zone and a quartz-albite-perthite-spodumene pegmatite zone. Previous concepts of the structure near the surface require no significant change, but the new data make possible a greatly improved interpretation of the structure at depth. The most notable change is the recognition of a narrow constriction in the pegmatite at a depth of 60 to 100 feet. -
