Taylor September 2001 Sui Generis: The Design Work Of Architect-Priest Monsignor John Cyril Hawes (1876-1956) Abstract Sui Generis (of its own kind; unique): The Design Work of Architect-Priest Monsignor John Cyril Hawes (1876-1956) MA in Conservation Studies (Historic Buildings) Dissertation by J.J. Taylor 116 pages, 81 figures (51 colour), bibliography and index John Hawes was born in England, and designed buildings (primarily ecclesiastical) that were constructed in Great Britain, the Bahamas, the United States of America, and Australia. The author previously produced an illustrated manuscript titled Between Devotion and Design that chronologically summarizes earlier research on John Hawes’ art and architecture. The University of Western Australia Press published this work in 2000. However the guiding forces that shaped Hawes’ design skills in Great Britain, and later in other places, have previously been addressed and documented in minor detail. Within this dissertation, special effort has been made to research and introduce new facts and connections with Hawes’ work. It differs from and improves previous work by examining early influences, contemporary architects, buildings, events and styles known or thought to have predisposed Hawes’ evolution as an architect. The methodology is an extension of previous research, examining documentary evidence, and physical evidence based on inspections of places discussed. Of difference is that in this paper, after examining Hawes’ formative years, the most stylistically expressive examples of Hawes’ work are selectively taken to illustrate evolving themes. It is expected that this dissertation will assist in the understanding of Hawes, and contribute to an increased appreciation of the value of his designs, buildings and artworks.     DOES YOUR CHURCH HAVE WORK BY ONE OF THE GREATEST VICTORIAN ARCHITECTS? George Edmund Street Diocesan Church Building Society, and moved to Wantage. The job involved checking designs submitted by other architects, and brought him commissions of his own. Also in 1850 he made his first visit to the Continent, touring Northern France. He later published important books on Gothic architecture in Italy and Spain. The Diocese of Oxford is extraordinarily fortunate to possess so much of his work In 1852 he moved to Oxford. Important commissions included Cuddesdon College, in 1853, and All Saints, Boyne Hill, Maidenhead, in 1854. In the next year Street moved to London, but he continued to check designs for the Oxford Diocesan Building Society, and to do extensive work in the Diocese, until his death in 1881. In Berkshire alone he worked on 34 churches, his contribution ranging from minor repairs to complete new buildings, and he built fifteen schools, eight parsonages, and one convent. The figures for Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire are similar. Street’s new churches are generally admired. They include both grand town churches, like All Saints, Boyne Hill, and SS Philip and James, Oxford (no longer in use for worship), and remarkable country churches such as Fawley and Brightwalton in Berkshire, Filkins and Milton- under-Wychwood in Oxfordshire, and Westcott and New Bradwell in Buckinghamshire. There are still some people for whom Victorian church restoration is a matter for disapproval. PAMELA MANASSEH THE BRYNMAWR EXPERIMENT, 1928-1940: QUAKER VALUES AND ARTS AND CRAFTS PRINCIPLES ABSTRACT This is a study of the social work of Quakers in the town of Brynmawr in South Wales during the depressions of the 1920s and 1930s. The work, which took place during the years 1928 to 1940, has become known as the Brynmawr Experiment. The initial provision of practical and financial relief for a town suffering severely from the effects of unemployment, was developed with the establishment of craft workshops to provide employment. Special reference is made to the furniture making workshop and the personnel involved with it. The thesis attempts to trace links between the moral and aesthetic values of Quakerism and the Arts and Crafts Movement and explores the extent to which the guiding principles of the social witness project and the furniture making enterprise resemble those of the Arts and Crafts Movement of the inter-war years, 1919-1939. All aspectsof the Quaker work at Brynmawr were prompted by concern for social justice and upholding the dignity of eachindividual.
