Razzle Dazzle Camouflage – Was it effective? By Geoff Walker The British have always been very innovative in conducting warfare, especially when it involved “Camouflage” both ashore and afloat. “Dazzle Camouflage” was just one of those many innovations. It consisted of complex patterns and geometric shapes in contrasting colors, interrupting, and intersecting, each other. It was not limited to just “Black and White”, but often multiple colors were introduced into the patterns. “HMS Belfast” at her London moorings Unknown photographer British Artist and naval officer, Norman Wilkinson had this very insight and is accredited with pioneering the Dazzle Camouflage system - known as Razzle Dazzle in the United States. Wilkinson used bright, loud colors and contrasting diagonal stripes to make it incredibly difficult to gauge a ship’s size and direction. How to camouflage ships at sea was one of the big questions of World War I. From the early stages of the war, artists, naturalists, and inventors showered the offices of the British Royal Navy with largely impractical suggestions on making ships less visible, or difficult to define. Wilkinson’s innovation, what would be called “Dazzle”, was rather than using camouflage to hide the vessel, he used it to hide the vessel’s intention. Later he’d say that he’d realized, “Since it was impossible to paint a ship so that she could not be seen by a submarine, the extreme opposite was the answer – in other words, to paint her, not for low visibility, but in such a way as to break up her form and thus confuse a submarine officer as the course on which she was heading.” Wilkinson used broad stripes and polygons of contrasting colors—black and white, green, and mauve, orange, and blue—in geometric shapes and curves to make it difficult to determine the ship’s actual shape, size, and direction. -

Within the field of furniture history, the Godwin sideboard (below) and the Mackintosh ‘Argyle’ chair (no. 17), both the creations of architect-designers, undoubtedly fall into this category. Artists and craftsmen also contributed some of the nineteenth- century’s finest achievements. Such highlights are reflected, respectively, in two objects that passed through our hands last year: the wall clock designed and painted by Lewis F. Day (see page 1) and the richly damascened table clock created by Placido Zuloaga (see final page). The opportunity to offer the Bullock cabinet (no. 1) is the culmination of a story that began nearly twenty years ago. -

Sir Clements R. Markham 1830-1916
Sir Clements R. Markham 1830-1916 ‘BLUE PLAQUES’ adorn the houses of south polar explorers James Clark Ross, Robert Falcon Scott, Edward Adrian Wilson, Sir Ernest H. Shackleton, and, at one time, Captain Laurence Oates (his house was demolished and the plaque stored away). If Sir Clements Markham had not lived, it’s not unreasonable to think that of these only the one for Ross would exist today. Markham was the Britain’s great champion of polar exploration, particularly Antarctic exploration. Markham presided over the Sixth International Geographical Congress in 1895, meeting in London, and inserted the declaration that “the exploration of the Antarctic Regions is the greatest piece of geographical exploration still to be undertaken.” The world took notice and eyes were soon directed South. Markham’s great achievement was the National Antarctic Expedition (Discovery 1901-04) for which he chose Robert Falcon Scott as leader. He would have passed on both Wilson and Shackleton, too. When Scott contemplated heading South again, it was Markham who lent his expertise at planning, fundraising and ‘gentle arm-twisting.’ Without him, the British Antarctic Expedition (Terra Nova 1910-13) might not have been. As a young man Markham was in the Royal Navy on the Pacific station and went to the Arctic on Austin’s Franklin Search expedition of 1850-51. He served for many years in the India Office. In 1860 he was charged with collecting cinchona trees and seeds in the Andes for planting in India thus assuring a dependable supply of quinine. He accompanied Napier on the Abyssinian campaign and was present at the capture of Magdala. -

chapter 20 “The Preservation and Safeguarding of the Amenities of the Holy City without Favour or Prejudice to Race or Creed”: The Pro-Jerusalem Society and Ronald Storrs, 1917–1926 Roberto Mazza The Beginnings in the Middle of Transition On September 6, 1918, twelve individuals met at the residence of the military governor of Jerusalem.1 The room was filled with tension as the governor was trying to win the confidence of those who were still skeptical and suspicious of British rule. A few months earlier, in December 1917, General Allenby had led the British troops into Jerusalem, ending Ottoman rule in the city and pav- ing the way for greater British success in the region. Though the conquest of Jerusalem proved to be a relatively easy military task, the control of the city required a larger set of skills. All aspects of the conquest and the takeover had been carefully planned in London. While Allenby’s military operations were unfolding in Palestine, the Foreign Office and War Office were discuss- ing the future asset of Jerusalem. Most of the policies adopted in relation to Jerusalem were a reflection of wartime agreements, including the Sykes–Picot Agreement and Balfour Declaration. British policy makers, starting with Mark Sykes, were aware of and sensitive to the tensions between the different reli- gious communities in Jerusalem. The coincidence is in some ways intentional because a Taylor schoolmate of mine from the 1950's, Dale Murphy, half jokingly recommended that I read the book as I was going to be making so many speeches during our sesquicentennial celebration. As a kind of hobby, I have over the years taken special notice of events concurrent with the college's founding in 1846. The opera Carman was first performed that year and in Germany a man named Bayer discovered the value of the world's most universal drug, aspirin. -

ABSTRACT This thesis explores the lives of four British Quaker women—Isabella Ford, Isabel Fry, Margery Fry, and Ruth Fry—focusing on the way they engaged in peace issues in the early twentieth century. In order to examine the complexity and diversity of their experiences, this thesis investigates the characteristics of their Quakerism, pacifism and wider political and personal life, as well as the connections between them. In contrast to O’Donnell’s view that most radical Victorian Quaker women left Quakerism to follow their political pursuits with like-minded friends outside of Quakerism, Isabella Ford, one of the most radical socialists, and feminists among Quakers remained as a Quaker. British Quakers were divided on peace issues but those who disagreed with the general Quaker approach resigned and were not disowned; the case of Isabel Fry is a good example of this. -

This was less than three years after Siegfried Bing had transformed his shop in Paris into the new and prestigious Salon de L'Art Nouveau. Important artist- designers in the Netherlands immediately recognized Arts and Crafts as the first Dutch gallery for contemporary decorative arts. The gallery presented handcrafted furniture, textiles, ceramics and metalwork of high quality alongside paintings and sculptures. Arts and Crafts only lasted until July 1904, whereas Bing's gallery closed in March 1905. But during the six years of its existence, the gallery played an important role in the world of Dutch applied arts by showing works by Dutch and foreign modern designers and by stimulating debate about the path the Dutch revival of the applied arts should take. -
