Drivers must bring their trains to a stand at the platform starting signals, clear of the station roof. T hey must ensure that excessive smoke is not emitted and that there is no excessive escape of steam from the safety valve. Except for light locomotives, the READY-TO-START signal must be given by means of the right away (RA) indicator. A drivers control wire is provided near to each 'Stop board together with a plunger in a locked cupboard. If the crossing equipment fails to respond to the operation of the control wire, the driver must try to operate the crossing equipment by either or both plungers. The plunger cupboards must be re-locked after use. The signaller at Preston box must be advised of the failure of any equipment at the level crossing at the earliest opportunity. The following procedure must be adopted until the failure is rectified or a crossing attendant is appointed: 1. F ailure of drivers whit e flashing light If the drivers white light fails to flash after the drivers control wire and plungers have been operated, the train may proceed over the crossing provided all the barriers are lowered, the road traffic signals are operating and the crossing is clear. 2. F ailure of barriers. If any barrier fails to lower, but drivers can establish that the red road traffic signals are operating, trains may proceed over the crossing provided the crossing is clear and it is safe to do so. 3. F ailure of red road traffic signals. If the red road traffic signals are not operating, trains must be dealt with as follows: (a) Up trains. If the first train affected is travelling in the up direction it may proceed over the crossing at extreme caution provided the crossing is clear and it is safe to do so. If necessary, the guard and any other competent staff travelling on the train must assist in stopping road traffic. (b) Down trains. If the first train affected is travelling in the down direction it must not be allowed to pass over the crossing but must return to Nelson.

Drivers will be advised when a crossing attendant is on duty and must work to the instructions of the crossing attendant. 4. F ailure of the 'BU' indicat ion. If the 131,Y indication has not been illuminated by the time the train is about to pass it, the train must stop and the guard must return to the crossing and attempt to raise the barriers by operating the 'Raise' button in the driver's plunger cupboard. If this also fails to raise the barriers the guard must raise the barriers manually in accordance with the instructions displayed in each barrier pedestal. The barriers must be secured in the raised position. The keys for the barrier pedestals are kept in a glass-fronted box in each driver's plunger cupboard. The keys must be replaced and the driver's plunger cupboard locked after the barriers have been raised. The circumstances must be reported to the signaller at Preston box at the first opportunity.
