• NEWSLETTER – JANUARY 2021 Hon
NEWSLETTER – JANUARY 2021 Hon. Secretary Brian Childs 28 Tudor Avenue A Message from our Chairman – Brian Spratt Gidea Park, Romford Essex, RM2 5LB 07770 382 371 (M) We know this year did not quite go as planned! [email protected] Sadly, every event planned for 2020 had to be cancelled, with the final hoped-for November visit to JLR Classic falling victim to Tier 2 restrictions in the West Midlands. Despite this lack of activities, and the consequent lack of revenue, I am pleased to reveal that the Fellowship has continued to support our motor industry charity BEN, with £5,000 donated in the middle of the year. As BEN’s CEO Zara Ross commented, “We are deeply moved that through this difficult time the Fellowship has continued to remember us. Our heartfelt thanks for everything you and the Fellowship do for BEN.” That's why we're so pleased to start looking forward, sharing with you our 2021 events programme. We know there is still uncertainty on the horizon and as a voluntary body without any external funding, we are acutely aware of this. But it has been the Fellowship's mission to share visits, sporting events, lunches, and other opportunities with Fellows for over 80 years, and we don't plan to stop now. The whole of your Committee value your support for the Fellowship so much, and we sincerely hope that our upcoming programme of events for 2021 will mean we can meet with you all once more. There will be old favourites, the Midlands and London lunches, along with other regulars, but there are new ventures, new locations, new experiences, but still with the constant theme of friendship and fellowship.

DURNOVARIA 1008 NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2017 The Essential Newsletter for the MG Owners Club Dorchester Area 1008 The British Motor Museum - ‘Old Number One’ MGOC Durnovaria 1008 - September 2017 Old Number One - a Brief History Front cover story The rather charming 1925 cherry red sports car on the front cover is the first MG to be built specifically to compete in sporting events. I took the photograph whilst on a recent visit to The British Motor Museum. The reason we had gone to the Birmingham area was that Sarah had planned a visit to the Quilting Exhibition at the NEC. This was to be a two-day session, but I declined the offer to join her and the hoards of other quilters, (probably mentioning that I would rather boil my own head), so I planned a two day petrol-head session for myself, taking in The British Motor Museum and the National Motorcycle Museum at Meriden Cecil Kimber and the ‘MG’ Special after preliminary testing and somewhere else, which I am too embarrassed to mention (oh alright, it was a bus museum!) The former Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon in Warwickshire has now been renamed the ‘British Motor Museum’ after a five million pound revamp with the aid of lottery funding. It now features over 250 cars on display and a fascinating ‘reserve collection’. With my obvious connections with things MG, on my visit I sought out quite a few interesting cars, including a rather nice black 1954 MG TF 1250 very similar to my own. There was also a fascinating cutaway display of an MGA Twin Cam amongst the other rare MGs.

A sectioned car demonstrating packaging and interior space. It was silver with paprika trim. British Motor Museum to host brand new ‘Metro at 40’ online exhibition. The British Motor Museum is to host a brand new exhibition to celebrate one of Britain’s best-selling small cars – entitled “Metro at 40”. For the first time the Museum will be www.wheels-alive.co.uk hosting the exhibition online as part of its drive to have more online and accessible insights into their collection. The exhibition, which went live on 9 September, is free to view from their website and gives everyone the chance to celebrate this iconic car’s special birthday. 2020 marks the 40th anniversary of the Austin Metro and 30th anniversary of the Rover Metro. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Museum hosted a one day celebration of the two iconic British small car marques. The National Metro & Mini Show took place on 6 September and saw enthusiasts enjoy a scaled back, but very enjoyable show. Cat Griffin, Curator at the British Motor Museum said “We opened our other anniversary exhibition “Range Rover at 50” in March but due to lockdown it was only open for two days. As the Museum was closed for three months we decided to extend the run of that display until 28 September and come up with a new way for people to enjoy the story of the Metro.
