Del Rawlins, story & photos. Additional photos: T. Rawlins, M. Walters, K. Morton, J. Quarles As most here will be aware, the itinerant MGA Guru travels the continent in search of MGs to repair. But some may have wondered, where does the Guru go when his own MGA is in need of repair? As it turns out, he goes to my house. The weather was great Wednesday, and the mosquitos not too bad at least for the first part of the day. Barney helicoiled the stripped thread, and then successfully drilled the broken stud, and turned it out with a screw extractor. A quick trip to Ace Hardware yielded 4 new grade 8 bolts, and the suspension was reassembled. Between the suspension repair, replacing some other hardware on both car and trailer, and getting caught Barney arrived in Anchorage a few days ago with his up on fluid changes and chassis grease, Barney and left front shock absorber held on by only 2 of the 4 Elliot were here until early evening and I really bolts; the inboard aft had the threads in the frame enjoyed the visit and also looking over the stripped, and the inboard forward was broken off, gurumobile. with the stub remaining in the hole below the surface. Initial plans were made to tackle the repair on It was also interesting comparing the different Monday morning, but he had to cancel due to rain, approaches to making the same repair on an and I was unfortunately unable to offer him indoor operational vehicle, versus one that has been space due to my garage being currently plugged up stripped for restoration. My dad’s MGA suffered a with stuff (I recently moved into this house). Tuesday similar shock mounting failure back in the ‘60s that British Sports Cars Alaska, August 1, 2017 Page 4 ended in a suspension collapse and expedient roadside installation of oversize studs. Decades later, I performed major surgery on the frame cross- member to remove the 3/8" thick plate that has the threaded holes, and weld in an undamaged piece sourced from a parts car frame. Some of the pics of that process are on Barney's site for those who may be interested. Editor’s note: Barney returned to Anchorage July 20th for some new tires before hitting the highway south. I tracked him down for a chat and a couple of photos. Bear Paw Festival Photos: Dean Cox, Donna Martin Barney arrived early (at least by my standard) this morning and spent basically the whole day here; shock mounting is fixed, and all of his fluid changes are caught up. He replaced some hardware on his trailer, too. He left at maybe 7:20 this evening. I did get a few pictures for you. I expect to see him again since he had a couple additional spare head gaskets shipped here which have not shown up yet. I thought I heard him say they may head for Homer next. Rick picked up a trophy with his Marcos at the July 14 Bear Paw Car Show. The British Motor Museum is a recommended stop for any British car enthusiast visiting the birth place of their car. The museum has everything from historic motorsports pieces such as Paddy Hopkirk's Monte Steve’s Lotus Exige Carlo Rally winning 1963 Morris Mini Cooper S and Tony Pond’s Triumph TR7 V8 rally car, to a run-of-the- mill 1960 Austin A40 Farina family run-about and everything in between.
