CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION: IN PRAISE OF BABBITTRY. SORT OF. SPATIAL PRACTICES IN SUBURBIA Kenneth Jackson’s Crabgrass Frontiers, one of the key histories of American suburbia, marshals a fascinating array of evidence from sociology, geography, real estate literature, union membership profiles, the popular press and census information to represent the American suburbs in terms of population density, home-ownership, and residential status. But even as it notes that “nothing over the years has succeeded in gluing this automobile-oriented civilization into any kind of cohesion – save that of individual routine,” Jackson’s comprehensive history under-analyzes one of its four key suburban traits – the journey-to-work.1 It is difficult to account for the paucity of engagements with suburban transportation and everyday experiences like commuting, even in excellent histories like Jackson’s. In 2005, the average American spent slightly more than twenty-five minutes per day commuting, a time investment that, over the course of a year, translates to more time commuting than he or she will likely spend on vacation.2 Highway-dependent suburban sprawl perpetually moves farther across the map in search of cheap available land, often moving away from both traditional central 1 In the introduction, Jackson describes journey-to-work’s place in suburbia with average travel time and distance in opposition to South America (home of siestas) and Europe, asserting that “an easier connection between work and residence is more valued and achieved in other cultures” (10). 2 One 2003 news report calculates the commuting-to-vacation ratio at 5-to-4: “Americans spend more than 100 hours commuting to work each year, according to American Community Survey (ACS) data released today by the U.S.

  • NEWSLETTER – JANUARY 2021 Hon
NEWSLETTER – JANUARY 2021 Hon. Secretary Brian Childs 28 Tudor Avenue A Message from our Chairman – Brian Spratt Gidea Park, Romford Essex, RM2 5LB 07770 382 371 (M) We know this year did not quite go as planned! [email protected] Sadly, every event planned for 2020 had to be cancelled, with the final hoped-for November visit to JLR Classic falling victim to Tier 2 restrictions in the West Midlands. Despite this lack of activities, and the consequent lack of revenue, I am pleased to reveal that the Fellowship has continued to support our motor industry charity BEN, with £5,000 donated in the middle of the year. As BEN’s CEO Zara Ross commented, “We are deeply moved that through this difficult time the Fellowship has continued to remember us. Our heartfelt thanks for everything you and the Fellowship do for BEN.” That's why we're so pleased to start looking forward, sharing with you our 2021 events programme. We know there is still uncertainty on the horizon and as a voluntary body without any external funding, we are acutely aware of this. But it has been the Fellowship's mission to share visits, sporting events, lunches, and other opportunities with Fellows for over 80 years, and we don't plan to stop now. The whole of your Committee value your support for the Fellowship so much, and we sincerely hope that our upcoming programme of events for 2021 will mean we can meet with you all once more. There will be old favourites, the Midlands and London lunches, along with other regulars, but there are new ventures, new locations, new experiences, but still with the constant theme of friendship and fellowship.

15 questions to Matthias Hinz and Michael Maasmeier of SCUDERIA AZZURRA Please introduce yourselves and your company. What is your company’s field of expertise? Maasmeier: My partners Matthias Hinz and Lukas Mühlemann are passionate classic car lovers – just like me. We have been collecting classic cars for decades. This passion for classic cars has brought us together, regardless of national borders. We have long been looking for the perfect restoration, but our expectations remained unfulfilled. Eventually, we decided to take matters into our own hands and founded SCUDERIA AZZURRA. We are offering classic Maserati, Alfa Romeo and Lancia on the international market. All cars have been restored in top condition exclusively by us in our own workshop. Using original components, we restore the cars completely, from car body, engine and gearboxes to technology. When did you fall for classic automobiles? Was there a key experience in your childhood/youth that turned you into a classic car lover? Hinz: I bought my first classic car, then a rather modern classic, at the age of 18. It was a 1968 VW Beetle Convertible. With the help of an alleged expert, I gained a first insight into car restoration. I discovered my passion for Italian sports cars in the early 90s. I read an article on a Lancia Flaminia Touring Coupé in a magazine for classic cars and it was love at first sight. I was so excited that I took the next opportunity and bought one in the US, without even looking at it beforehand. Maasmeier: My father was a true sports car fan and owned a Jaguar.
