It is most-easily reached by car, but buses (from Hradec Králové) and trains (about every two hours from Prague during the day, with one change in Starkoč). The starting point in Broumov is easy to spot. The Broumov Monastery is a unmissable feature and its courtyard can be reached from the main town square. The Broumov Monastery An impressive Baroque compound whose walls have hidden many secrets. The last of those was surrendered in 1999, when a unique copy of the Shroud of Turin has been discovered in an inconspicuous box in the St. Adalbert Church. St. Wenceslas Church in Broumov Start your cycling ride to see a unique set of smaller churches designed by the Dientzenhofers in Broumov itself. The smallest church in what is called the Broumov Group. St. Wenceslas, is right by the former lower gate. Wooden Church of Our Lady in Broumov Even though it is much older than Baroque period, this wooden church at Broumov‘s Cemetery is defi nitely worth a visit, since it is one of the oldest wooden churches in Central Europe with unique paintings. It probably dates back to 1450. St. Barbara‘s Church in Otovice The Stěnava river valley with roadside chapels and other small archi- tecture off ers a glance into how the surrounding landscape might have looked during the Baroque period. The new cycling path with superb views of the Javoří hory hills will bring you to Otovice in just a few kilo- metres. Its plan and structure are a great example of how creative the Dientzenhofers could be even with such small buildings. Of note is a false wooden vaulted ceiling, suspended from a cleverly-designed structure. 4 km 5. St. Margaret‘s Church in Šonov One of the most impressive churches in the Broumov Group awaits you on a slope by the village of Šonov. Its silhouette is a testament to the Baroque architects‘ (the Dientzenhofers again in this case) mastery at locating their designs within the landscape. Church of All Saints in Heřmánkovice A road near the Polish border will take you to another architectonic marvel by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer. The church in Heřmánkovice, surrounded by a small cemetery, is a natural focal point in the landsca- pe. The original Baroque Rectory next to the church is also worth a look. 4 km 7. Olivětín Brewery The Benedict Monastery has been producing beer since medieval times. The beer production was fi rst mentioned in the 14th century, but as a result of frequent fi res, the monks decided to move the brewery away from the monastery itself. The present-day brewery in Olivětín was fou- nded in 1712. Infrastructural and socio-economic settings The transboundary Wałbrzych / Broumov pilot area, being investigated during GeoPLASMA-CE project covers a total area of ca 1,245 km2, including Polish part - i.e. Wałbrzych area – of ca 767 km2 and Czech area of 478 km2 (Figure 1 A). The selection of such a range of the examined area resulted from the need to include the whole Wałbrzych district and the northern part of the Nachod district. For technical reasons, related with 3D modelling to be performed during the project, the research area is increased by special buffer zone, which enlarges the total area to 1,536 km2. Geographically, the main part of the Wałbrzych / Broumov area is located in Central Sudety Mts. Page 5 Due to generally mountaineous character, average heights of the Wałbrzych area vary from 300-400 m a.s.l. in the N and up to 800-940 m a.s.l. in the S (Kamienne Mts.). The main rivers flowing through the area are the Lesk, the Pełcznica, the Ścinawka, the Bystrzyca and the Zadrna. In terms of administrative division, the Wałbrzych area is located in the southern part of the Lower Silesian Voivodship and comprises territory of the Wałbrzych City (town with district rights) and a whole Wałbrzych district.

KLADSKO ON THE EVE OF THE HUSSITE REVOLUTION It has been observed several times that the valley of the Upper Nisa River, which constitutes the district of Kladsko, is an image in miniature of the Vltava (Moldau) River basin which constitutes Bohemia. But it has never been noticed that the history of this district shows the same basic features as the history of Bohemia itself. This is hardly surprising for the district itself was an integral part of the Kingdom of Bohemia until 1742, and belonged to the archdiocese of Prague until 1935. No wonder, then, that the general movement of Czech history is reflected more or less faithfully in the local history of the city and the region of Kladsko. This region went through the same alternating periods of glory and suffering, of material prosperity and tragic destruction, of cultural flowering and spiritual decline, which characterize the history of the whole nation of Czechs and Slovaks. Let us recall at least the most important corresponding phases of the national and local histories. In the tenth century, after the destruction of Great Moravia by the Magyars, christianized Bohemia took over the cultural heritage of the Eastern branch of the nation; its Northeastern frontier outpost of Kladsko, which at that time belonged to the father of St. Adalbert, then became very probably the main gateway through which Christianity was carried by the Czech apostles to neighbouring Poland. When the Mongolian devastation of Polish Silesia created the demographic vacuum which began to be filled by German immigrants, the district of Kladsko was exposed to the same pressure of Germanization as the Western districts of Bohemia.

    The Broumov Group of Churches and other monuments in the region 1 Bezděkov nad Metují | Church of St. Procope Although geographically Bezděkov nad Metují does not fall within the area of the Broumov re- gion, the local Church of St. Procope belongs to the so-called Broumov Group of Churches. This is because its construction was related to the operation of the Benedictines in the neighbouring region of Police. The church was built on the outskirts of the village on a hill next to the crossing of roads to Poli- ce nad Metují, Machov and Náchod. It was erected in the period 1724–27, without any doubts, on a place where an older church used to stand. Because Bezděkov was falling within the authority of the provost of Police that was subject to the Břevnov-Broumov abbey, Kilian Ignaz Dietzenhofer, the then personal architect of abbot Otmar Zinke, was charged with the design of the new building of the Church of St. Procope. The floor projec- tion of the body is a slightly prolate octagon. The rectangular chancel is ended by a semi- circular apsis and the right-angled alcoves of chapels along the southern and northern wall of the body are connected by narrow paths with sacristies on both sides of the sanctuary. The great altar in the baroque wooden framing holds the painting of Prince Ulrich Meeting St. Procope. In the attachment to this painting, St. Günter a co-patron of the church, is pictured. Two empire side altars are decorated with paintings of St. Wenceslas and Virgin Mary.
