The significance of the place rose, mainly during the Hussite Wars. The fact that the Břevnov monastery in Prague was set alight by the Hussites in 1420 meant that Nicholas II decided to make for Broumov together with a few monks. They took with them a number The frescoes on the ceiling of the monastery church of on the ceiling of monastery The frescoes church and they Jakub Steinfels by St. Adalbert created were of St. Adalbert.depict the life The monasterythe State complex was included in heritage of of architectural Program Preservation devastated its severely Republic due to the Czech condition. of valuable artefacts. That is how the Code weighing 75 kg, a height of the back measuring almost a meter came to existence. 1 2 3 The construction of „the group of churches in Broumov Region“ was initiated by the abbot Otmar Zinke. He intended to replace the existing network of wooden churches - that was taken care of by father and son Dientzenhofer, who created twelve Baroque pearls in this region. It was under the watch of Abbot Sartorius that work began on the conversion of the monastery church from Gothic to Baroque under the guidance of Italian maestro Martin Allio of Löwenthal between 1685 and 1688. Work was completed under Abbot Zinke, who entrusted completion work to prominent Baroque architect Christoph Dientzenhofer 1689 Prague – 1751 and his son Kilian Ignaz. The German community was expelled from Broumov after the Second World War and two of the monks at one of the parishes in the area were even murdered. Then, in 1946, Czech-American Benedictine monks from the St. Procopius Abbey in Lisle, not far from Chicago, tried to settle the monastery. However, they were expelled from the country in 1948 after the communists had taken power. The nuns interned here lived under inhumane conditions and were forced to work in factories and in agriculture in Broumov and the surrounding area. The situation only improved in 1968, when changes in the political situation allowed the nuns to work in charity homes. Only Dominican nuns remained in Broumov, here baking wafers for all parishes in Bohemia and Moravia. They too, however, moved in 1990, to a nunnery in Moravia. There are no members of the Benedictine order living in the monastery at this time. The Benedictine monastery school (later a grammar school) was very well-known before the Hussite Wars. As was the case with other monastery schools, the one in Broumov concentrated on religious education and was primarily intended to teach future members of the order. Activity at the school was obviously interrupted by the Hussite Wars. The school re-opened under Abbot Benn Falk, who established a grammar school with four years of study in 1624, making it the third oldest grammar school in Bohemia. Abbot Otmar Daniel Zinke later tried to transform the grammar school into a lyceum focusing on philosophy and theology. He did not manage 1663 Praque – 1738 Broumov to do so, however, as a result of the low number of students, but he was able to have a new grammar school building erected within the monastery grounds in 1711. The grammar school was closed by the Nazis in 1939. It was used as a State College during the War and after 1945 as a Czechoslovak State Realschule, the seat of which was relocated to new premises. Among the prominent people to have graduated from the school are the first Archbishop of Prague, Arnošt of Pardubice, historian Bohuslav Balbín, patriotic priest Josef Regner Havlovický and writer Alois Jirásek, a native of the nearby Hronov. Minister of Finance of the first Czechoslovak government Alois Rašín also studied at the school. THE MONASTERY LIBRARY The library was established when the monastery was in its infancy, the founder of the order, St. Benedict, having placed great importance on reading among his monks. The library is now one of the few monastery libraries to have been preserved in the Czech Republic and houses some 17,000 volumes. However, the collection was once considerably larger. The books in the library are written in Latin, Hebrew, French, German, Spanish, English, Czech and many other languages. In the same way you can find books here about theology, philosophy, history and natural science and indeed the classics. VALUABLE EXHIBITS In addition to the library, the monastery is also home to a rare replica of the Turin Shroud that was created in 1651. The shroud was discovered in the monastery church in 1999, above the Chapel of the Holy Cross (kaple sv. Kříže), in a wooden box behind a gilded stucco garland bearing the inscription of Sancta Sindon. An original document was found with the shroud, from which it is clear that it was gifted by the Archbishop of Turin Julius Caesar Barbera to Matthäus Ferdinand Sobek von Bilenberg, who would later become the Archbishop of Prague and who subsequently gifted it to the monastery in Broumov. There of linen fabric, which mainly is a relic are around 40 similar replicas throughout the world, the one in Broumov being the only one in Central Europe. Another special exhibit is a collection of 34 mummies that were originally found in the crypt of the parish Church of St. Procopius (kostel sv. Prokopa) in Vamberk. MONASTERY GARDENS Gardens were created beside the monastery sometime around 1676 under Abbot Sartorius. A decorative, terraced garden was created at the front in the Baroque Italian style, with regular, geometric ornamentation.

    C. Description of the Wałbrzych / Broumov area 1. Infrastructural and socio-economic settings The transboundary Wałbrzych / Broumov pilot area, being investigated during GeoPLASMA-CE project covers a total area of ca 1,245 km2, including Polish part - i.e. Wałbrzych area – of ca 767 km2 and Czech area of 478 km2 (Figure 1 A). The selection of such a range of the examined area resulted from the need to include the whole Wałbrzych district and the northern part of the Nachod district. For technical reasons, related with 3D modelling to be performed during the project, the research area is increased by special buffer zone, which enlarges the total area to 1,536 km2. Geographically, the main part of the Wałbrzych / Broumov area is located in Central Sudety Mts. This area is morphologically very differentiated and includes fragments of several mesoregions (Figure 1 B). Figure 1. A. Location of the Wałbrzych / Broumov pilot area on topographic map. B. Morphological map of the investigated area shown on Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Page 5 Due to generally mountaineous character, average heights of the Wałbrzych area vary from 300-400 m a.s.l. in the N and up to 800-940 m a.s.l. in the S (Kamienne Mts.). The main rivers flowing through the area are the Lesk, the Pełcznica, the Ścinawka, the Bystrzyca and the Zadrna. In terms of administrative division, the Wałbrzych area is located in the southern part of the Lower Silesian Voivodship and comprises territory of the Wałbrzych City (town with district rights) and a whole Wałbrzych district.

  • The Czechs and the Lands of the Bohemian Crown
6 Rebellion and Catastrophe The Thirty Years’ War was the last great religious war in Europe, and the first Europe-wide conflict of balance-of-power politics. Beginning with the Bohemian rebellion in 1618, the war grew into a confrontation between the German Protestant princes and the Holy Roman Emperor, and finally became a contest between France and the Habsburgs’ two dynastic monarchies, involving practically all other powers. The war may be divided into four phases: the Bohemian-Palatinate War (1618– 23), the Danish War (1625–29), the Swedish War (1630–35), and the Franco-Swedish War (1635–48). When the war finally ended with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the treaties set the groundwork for the system of international relations still in effect today. The outcome of the war integrated the Bohemian crownlands more fully with the other Habsburg possessions in a family empire that aspired to maintain its position as one of the powers in the international state system. This aspiration involved recurrent conflicts, on one side with the Turks, and on the other with Louis XIV’s France. .......................... 10888$ $CH6 08-05-04 15:18:33 PS PAGE 68 Rebellion and Catastrophe 69 VAE VICTIS!: THE BOHEMIAN CROWNLANDS IN THE THIRTY YEARS’ WAR After the Battle of the White Mountain and Frederick’s flight from Prague (his brief reign earned him the epithet ‘‘The Winter King’’), the last garrisons loyal to the Estates in southern and western Bohemia surrendered in May 1622. • The Baroque in West Germany: Creating Regional Identity in the Post-National Federal State
The Baroque in West Germany: creating regional identity in the post-National Federal State. Exhibitions as mass media ‘for a wide audience’ Meinrad v. Engelberg Do individual countries and states develop an ‘image of the Baroque’ that is specific, typical of its era, clearly defined and visibly distinct from that of other nations? Is it thus possible to make a statement about the rather numerous and diverse Baroque exhibitions in West Germany – the ‘old’ Federal Republic of Germany prior to 1990 – that meaningfully integrates the individual case into an overall context? The following essay advocates the thesis that a common ‘meta-narrative’ is hidden behind this diversity, integrating the art of the Baroque affirmatively into the simultaneously forming self-image of the young ‘Bonn Republic’, namely, that of a post-nationalist, European-networked, historically rooted, profoundly federalist ‘Kulturnation’. Surely more than any other form of presentation, the (thematic) exhibition may be considered the most typical medium for conveying art to the public, at least since the second half of the twentieth century.1 The ceremonial queue through elaborately promoted events, which for some time have been given the booming epithet ‘blockbuster’, manifest their success today and provide evidence of their unbroken acceptance in the ‘event’ society .2 Unfortunately, by nature the exhibition, unlike the film or the book, is an ephemeral, fleeting medium: the temporary spatial disposition of this form of presentation usually disappears without a trace after the closing party and is in essence more poorly documented, and less thoroughly discussed in the press, than, for example, the stage sets of theatre productions.3 For that reason, I am taking 1 This does not refer to classic exhibition formats such as the Salons de Paris or to monographic shows of artists, but rather to project in which a certain (historical) theme is presented and discussed with a variety of disparate objects.

The vault covers St. Bernard’s Chapel in the Plasy Monastery and represents a masterpiece in Santini’s late career. The authors try to understand its construction technology with the help of modern surveying methods. The shape of the vault structure is complex, therefore a detailed geometrical survey of both intrados and extrados was performed. The data collected in situ, photogrammetric blocks, were used as a basis for the modeling of the vault shape.

  • Reliability Analysis of St. Barbara's Church in Otovice
ADVANCED MASTERS IN STRUCTURAL ANALYSYS OF MONUMENTS AND HISTORICAL CONSTRUCTION Master’s Thesis Chandrashekhar Mahato Reliability analysis of St. Barbara’s Church in Otovice Czech Republic | 2019 CZECH TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY IN PRAGUE Faculty of Civil Engineering Thákurova 7, 166 29 Prague 6, Czech Republic MASTER‘S THESIS PROPOSAL study programme: Civil Engineering study branch: Advanced Masters in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions academic year: 2018/2019 Student’s name and surname: Chandrashekhar Mahato Department: Department of Mechanics Thesis supervisor: Pavel Kuklík Thesis title: Reliability Analysis of St. Barbara´s Church in Otovice Thesis title in English see above Framework content: The main objective of this thesis is to determine the stability of St. Barbara's church and elaborates upon the different methods adopted to evaluate the structural safety based on a probabilistic approach. A deterministic assessment of the structure is carried out and the results are assessed with reference to the present site condition. Depending upon the observed damages, a condition for failure is defined for the structure. Reliability analysis is then carried out taking into account the uncertainties in material parameters and to determine the reliability index, probability of failure and influence of different material parameters on the structural stability. Assignment date: 1/04/2019 Submission date: 8/09/2019 If the student fails to submit the Master’s thesis on time, they are obliged to justify this fact in advance in writing, if this request (submitted through the Student Registrar) is granted by the Dean, the Dean will assign the student a substitute date for holding the final graduation examination (2 attempts for FGE remain).
