In October 1862, the Duke of Argyll published an article in the Edinburgh Review entitled “The Supernatural.” In it, Argyll argued that contrary to the prevailing assumption, miracles were “natural” rather than “supernatural” acts of God. This reconcep- tualization was a response to the controversial publication Essays and Reviews (1860), which challenged orthodox Biblical doctrine. Argyll’s characterization of a miracle was not novel; a number of early mod- ern Newtonian thinkers had advanced the same argument for similar reasons. New in this nineteenth-century reconceptualization, how- ever, were (1) the recent geological, physical, and evolutionary devel- opments and (2) the introduction of German higher criticism. Argyll and the neo-Newtonians thus attempted to construct a philosophico- theological alternative, which would constitute a middle-position be- tween the traditional acceptance and liberal rejection of miracles.

    Anglo.-Catholicism in Victorian England DESMOND BOWEN o MOVEMENT is more in need of reinterpretation than that which began N in the Church of England in the nineteenth century, and is usually referred to as Anglo-Catholicism. In our day when the ecumenical move­ ment is so important, the veneration of the episcopal office and the clerical­ ism and medievalism associated with Anglo-Catholicism tend to make it an object of great suspicion in the minds of churchmen. In the Church of England, for example, the conservative Evangelical party, and Lord Fisher of Lambeth, until recently Archbishop of Canterbury, have both expressed fear of the clericalism and medievalism of Anglo-Catholicism, and the influ­ ence these may have on the possibility of Anglican-Methodist reunion. Most interpretations of the Anglo-Catholic movement are based on the classic studies of Dean Church in his Oxford Movement, 1833-1845, and of S. L. Ollard in his Short History of the Oxford Movement. Because of this circumstance, the movement is generally viewed as a clerical and romantic reaction against the Erastianism and latitudinarianism in the Church of England in the eighteenth century. Aberrations such as the passionate concern for apostolic succession, which characterized the early or Tractarian stage of Anglo-Catholicism, are attributed to all adherents of the movement throughout the century.1 This paper contends that the Tractarian phase of Anglo-Catholicism is by no means characteristic of the movement as a whole. Several decades later, Stanley would be the Dean of Westminster and Tait the Archbishop of Canterbury, but in 1839 they were two young scholars travelling to Germany in search of a better way to organize a university. It proposed a revival of the professorial system at Oxford. Cannon Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Geoffrey Boers Choral Conducting, School of Music The formative years of William Walton (1902–1983) are rarely considered when studying the composer’s life and works. However, careful study of that period indicates many of the directions that the adult Walton would take. Industrial Lancashire was more musically active during the period of Walton’s youth (covering the years 1902 to 1912) than is generally considered. His time as a chorister and later undergraduate at Christ Church, Oxford (1912 to 1920), is replete with influential interactions with talented adults and fellow students. Detailed consideration of Walton’s juvenilia reveals a keen thinker who assimilated these various influences in a unique manner. Far more than merely a springboard for a future talent, these years resulted in inspired works and a firm purpose for the budding composer. Its many passing generations of teachers and students have left behind them a wealth of traditions honourable or the reverse.Yet it seems not impossible to combine in one volume a series of College histories.

    1 THE UNBALANCING OF AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITIES Richard Davis September 2002 ‘We university teachers have let our values slip and that is why the university is disintegrating around us. It will not come to life again as a true community, with a purpose of its own which it understands and believes in, until we, as individual persons and in our groups, set ourselves to the task of examining the foundations of our beliefs.’ Sir Keith Hancock (1954)1 The Problem of Australian Academia in the 21st Century Nearly fifty years after the eminent Australian historian, Sir Keith Hancock, raised the issue Australian Universities are in turmoil. Barely a week passes without news of underfunding, staff and student dissatisfaction or the intrusion of corporate demands into scholarly activity. The pages of papers like the Australian Higher Education Supplement teem with the jargon and rhetoric of educational privatisation and depict the bizarre commercialized offshoots of public universities. Student beer-drinking, no longer a diversion from study, becomes a constitutent part of a beer brewing course.2 TV comedy shows like Peter Berner’s Backburner exploit academic gyrations for an easy laugh. The Bob Connolly and Robin Anderson 2001 documentary, Facing the Music, graphically depicts the total demoralisation of the renowned Sydney University Music Department after persistent financial cuts. La Trobe University’s Music Department, with an excellent research record, is abolished.3 While Australian public opinion firmly rejects the entry of refuge-seeking ‘boat people’, it requires an influx of full fee-paying foreign students to shore up its ailing tertiary education structure.4 Pressure is applied to adapt standards.
