It was about a program that helped troubled youth learn automotive repair skills. As a child, Carmona was interested in cars and science and how the two worked together. The program seemed a perfect fit for the then 20-year-old who said he realized that, “Hanging out in the streets did not constitute having a bright future.” Looking back, Carmona sees his decision to apply to YATC as a pivotal moment. “Who knew one interview could change my life?” he said. “It’s the small steps that count. Speaking to a crowd of hundreds of YATC friends was a daunting task for Maxu Daceus, a graduate of Class 24 (2002). But telling his story to those gathered at the 2009 Jim Moran Classic wasn’t as challenging as the decision he made nearly a decade ago to turn his life around and walk away from drugs, crime and gangs that had filled his life since he was 11 years old. Speaking from his heart, Daceus told the gathering how YATC influenced him. “Because I found this program, my life has changed. I would not be where I am today without YATC and Mr. Moran,” he said. Hearing Daceus’ story was a chance for those at the Jim Moran Classic to hear firsthand how their contributions make a difference.
