The Unusual Heat fillies Bel Air Sizzle and Lethal Heat, both trained by Barry Abrams, filled the next two spots. TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 8/17/08 • PAGE 2 of 14 Alabama S. cont. After three straight seconds to Indian Blessing, Proud Spell turned the tables on that rival in the GII Fair Grounds Oaks Mar. 8, but ran third to Little Belle in the GI Ashland S. Apr. 5 at Keeneland. After handily de- feating that rival in the GI Kentucky Oaks May 2, the compact bay tackled Music Note in the GI Mother Goose S. June 28 at Belmont. She suffered a horror trip en route to crossing the line in second, but insult was added to injury when she was demoted to third. Having recovered from some minor cuts incurred that day, the Brereton Jones homebred returned two weeks later to post a workmanlike triumph in the GII Delaware Oaks, and the battle was joined for a Saratoga showdown. With no one eager to take the lead, Rajiv Maragh opted to put Little Belle in front, and the Godolphin filly led comfortably through splits of :24.97, :50.22 and 1:14.70 as Proud Spell sat just off her flank. The sec- ond choice engaged the pacesetter on the turn for home and poked her head in front, only to be joined by Music Note in front of the stands. That big filly looked set to go by, but Proud Spell kept fighting on the inside as the two gave the on-track crowd of 32,344 their money=s worth down the stretch. Trainer Larry Jones was jubilant after the race. AIn my mind, there's no doubt she's the best three-year-old filly in the country and, hopefully, we showed it here today,@ said the man in the white hat. AIt came down to an eyeball-to-eyeball contest, and Proud Spell was actually getting away from her at the end." Jones will savor this score before setting Proud Spell=s next target. AWe'll see how she comes out of this,@ he added. AWe'll try to enjoy this Saturday, Del Mar win a little more than the Kentucky Oaks, because that DEL MAR OAKS-GI, $350,000, DMR, 8-16, 3yo, f, got short-tailed.
