Paul Kirchhoff (1900-1972) a Paul Kirchhoff (1900-1972) Quien ha tenido oportunidad de encontrarse con Paul Kirchhoff en México, su segunda patria, en los Estados Unidos, o durante una de sus visitas a Eu- ropa, se hallaba frente a un personaje que merecía el mayor respeto, y cuya sinceridad y actitud abierta tanto en el campo de la ciencia como en el de la política eran ejemplares. Desde sus años de estudio, que tuvieron lugar du- rante el segundo tercio de la República de Weimar, de vida breve y sacudi- da por una crisis tras otra, Paul Kirchhoff siempre abogó intrépida e imper- turbablemente por la libertad del espíritu, por grandes que fuesen el pe- ligro personal que corriera o el perjuicio que le significara este enfrenta- miento. Esta rectitud e inflexibilidad, que iba a la par con un ardiente sentimiento de justicia social, Paul Kirchhoff acaso la haya heredado de sus padres de origen wrestfálico - el arquitecto Richard Kirchhoff y su esposa Minna Wen- trup de Kirchhoff - como cuyo hijo naciera el 17 de agosto de 1900 en Hör- ste (Westfalia). La madre de Paul Kirchhoff, que quedó sola con su hijo sien- do éste muy niño aún, tiene que cargar con todo el peso tanto educacional co- mo económico. Under what circumstances did they announce the Word of God? What did their preaching achieve? What challenges did they face? What were they announcing? What methods were used for evangelization? It is important to try to answer these questions – not only for our sake as Dominican men and women, but also for the sake of the Church – because clear proclamation of the gospel will always find opposition. In our discussion of the topics described below, we have tried to add as few words as possible. Rather, it is our belief that the writings of the first Dominicans in the “New World” speak for themselves. The detailed and insightful reading of their testimonies will challenge our daily routine and encourage us to rediscover the novelty of the Gospel. It is true that the forces which presently repress or deny human dignity and the agents that enforce such situations are different from those that existed five centuries ago. -

The purpose is to show how the social, cultural, and political antecedents led to the National War. This has been done by focusing on William Walker and Padre Agustín Vijil. William Walker was the American filibuster invited to Nicaragua in 1855 by the Liberals to aid them in the year old civil war with the Conservatives. Walker took control of the Nicaraguan government, first through a puppet president. He became president himself in July of 1856. Padre Agustín Vijil encountered Walker in October of 1855 and provided an example of the support given to Walker by Nicaraguans. Though Walker would be forced to leave Nicaragua in 1857, the intersection between these individuals sheds light on actions shaping the National War. -

This following biographical sketch is chiefly based on the items listed in the final paragraph of the Selective bibliography section below. Rudolf (Alois) Klement was born in Hamburg (Germany) on November 4, 1908 1 as son of an archi- tect. After finishing his secondary school education, Klement took up philological studies at various universities in Germany and abroad. It is said that he knew at least five languages, including Russian. As a student, he became a member of the Kommunistische Partei Deutschland (KPD, Communist Party of Germany) from which, however, he was expelled in 1932 when he approached Trotskyist positions and was recruited by Georg Jungclas to the Hamburg branch of the Linke Opposition der KPD, Bolschewiki-Leninisten) (LO, Left Opposition of the KPD, Bolshevik-Leninists), the German section of the International Left Opposition (ILO) inspired by Leon Trotsky and led by his son, Lev Sedov. -

EXPLAINING MESOAMERICA Eric Wolf* Anthropology is an unusual discipline - ‘impossible’, as Aidan Southall has said, ‘but necessaryi. It’s objects of study are human beings, peculiarly polymorphous as creatures both biological and cultural; behaving so you can observe them, yet also engaged in inaudible internal discussions; transforming nature through production, while simultaneously using language and making symbols. So far no one theory has done justice to this gamut of characteristics. Any one attempt at theory has inevitably privileged some aspects over others, selecting these aspects as ‘figure’ and relegating the rest to “ground”. The followers of any one of these approaches —temporarily hegemonic— always hoped that the marginalized phenomena would someday be explained by means of the dominant paradigm. Inevitably, temporary success was followed by a return of ‘the repressed’, often accompanied by claims that the hitherto back grounded material actually contained the missing key to solve all problems. These cycles of assertion and replacement have intensified as anthropologists previously confined within particular national traditions increasingly communicate trans-nationally. There is probably no one solution to this impasse in finding an all-powerful, all- embracing theory, but several more modest alternatives suggest themselves. One is to become more eclectic, to turn into a virtue what Marvin Harris has stigmatized as a vice. We might come to admit a range of theoretical perspectives and treat them as so many 'discovery procedures’. In place of one imperial master-paradigm, we could entertain the possibility of a set of micro-paradigms, each the source of a set of methods that might teach us something new and interesting about the world. -

Chapter 1 Anthropological Theory
Introduction This dissertation is a historical ethnography of religious diversity in post- revolutionary Nicaragua, a study of religion and politics from the vantage point of Catholics who live in the city of Masaya located on the Pacific side of Nicaragua at the end of the twentieth century. My overarching research question is: How may ethnographically observed patterns in Catholic religious practices in contemporary Nicaragua be understood in historical context? Analysis of religious ritual provides a vehicle for understanding the history of the Nicaraguan struggle to imagine and create a viable nation-state. In Chapter 1, I explain how anthropology benefits by using Max Weber’s social theory as theoretical touchstone for paradigm and theory development. Considering postmodernism problematic for the future of anthropology, I show the value of Weber as a guide to reframing the epistemological questions raised by Michel Foucault and Talal Asad. Situating my discussion of contemporary anthropological theory of religion and ritual within a post-positive discursive framework—provided by a brief comparative analysis of the classical theoretical traditions of Durkheim, Marx, and Weber—I describe the framework used for my analysis of emerging religious pluralism in Nicaragua. My ethnographic and historical methods are discussed in Chapter 2. I utilize the classic methods of participant-observation, including triangulation back and forth between three host families. In every chapter, archival work or secondary historical texts ground the ethnographic data in its relevant historical context. Reflexivity is integrated into my ethnographic research, combining classic ethnography with post-modern narrative methodologies. My attention to reflexivity comes through mainly in the 10 description of my methods and as part of the explanation for my theoretical choices, while the ethnographic descriptions are written up as realist presentations. -
