In the Communist Manifesto, the theory was applied in broad outline to the whole of modern history; in the articles by Marx and myself in the Neue Rheinische Zeitung, it was constantly used to interpret political events of the day. Here, on the other hand, the question was to demonstrate the inner causal connection in the course of a development which extended over some years, a development

Classical music, hard rock and jazz were the dominating influences in the music created by ELP. Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer made up the British trio, but it found its origins at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. Emerson and Lake, who were looking for projects outside their current bands, worked together and found their styles were “compatible and complementary.” Music impresario Robert Stigwood suggested that they add Carl Palmer as their drummer.

He was a great man from whom I learnt it, and his own life was a practical demonstration of this great principle I have been always learning great lessons from that one principle, and it appears to me that all the secret of success is there; to pay as much attention to the means as to the end. Our great defect in life is that we are so much drawn to the ideal, the goal is so much more enchanting, so much more alluring, so much bigger in our mental horizon, that we lose sight of the details altogether. But whenever failure comes, if we analyse it critically, in ninety-nine per cent of cases we shall find that it was because we did not pay attention to the means. Proper attention to the finishing, strengthening, of the means is what we need. With the means all right, the end must come. We forget that it is the cause that produces the effect; the effect cannot come by itself; and unless the causes are exact, proper, and powerful, the effect will not be produced.

Marius Constant) Le tombeau de Couperin • La valse Maurice Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales present a vivid mixture of atmospheric impressionism, intense expression and modernist wit, his fascination with the waltz further explored in La valse, a mysterious evocation of a vanished imperial epoch. Heard here in an orchestration by Marius Constant, Gaspard de la nuit is Ravel’s response to the other-worldly poems of Aloysius Bertrand, and the dance suite Le tombeau de Couperin is a tribute to friends who fell in the war of 1914-18 as well as a great 18th century musical forbear. ‘It is a delightful and assorted collection… presented in splendid performances by the Orchestre National de Lyon led by their music director, the venerable American conductor Leonard Slatkin.’ (Classical.net / Volume 1, 8.572887) Volume 1 of this series of Ravel’s orchestral music (8.572887 and NBD0030) has proved an immediate hit and has been warmly received by the press. Gramophone admired Leonard Slatkin’s ‘affinity with [Ravel’s] particular world of sound’, and of the Orchestre National de Lyon, stated that ‘it augurs well as a companion to the orchestra’s Debussy set 8.572888 Playing Time: 66:39 under Jun Märkl.’ The Blu-ray version provides a spectacular alternative to CD, ‘the orchestral colors… are beautifully realized by Slatkin and his forces, and well-preserved in either hi-res format’ (Audiophile Audition 7 47313 28887 8 5-star review).

  • The Published Music of Keith Emerson: Expanding the Solo Piano
THE PUBLISHED MUSIC OF KEITH EMERSON: EXPANDING THE SOLO PIANO REPERTOIRE by GIUSEPPE LUPIS (Under the Direction of Richard Zimdars) ABSTRACT The study examines the published music of Keith Emerson (b.1944) and includes solo piano transcriptions of thirteen of his compositions. Emerson’s music was published on three continents over a period of thirty years (1975-2005). Because almost all of it is currently out of print, a need exists for a cataloguing and a rediscovery of his music. The work is in five chapters. The first, a short biography, examines Emerson as a composer. The second addresses the importance of Emerson’s music. The third covers the sources of Emerson’s published compositions and a performance and recording history of Emerson’s music performed by pianists other than the composer. The fourth chapter surveys thirteen compositions which appear as solo piano transcriptions in the fifth chapter. Works of Karl Marx 1850 The Class Struggles in France, 1848 to 1850 Written: by Marx, January - October 1850 for the Neue Rheinische Zeitung Revue; Published: as a booklet by Engels in 1895; Source: Selected Works, Volume 1, Progress Publishers, Moscow 1969; Proofed: and corrected by Matthew Carmody, 2009, Mark Harris 2010; Transcribed: by Louis Proyect. Great importance must be attached to one of the historical documents of the German labour movement: the Preface written by Fredrick Engels for the 1895 re-issue of Marx’s Class Struggles in France … looking back upon the year 1848, he showed that the belief that the socialist revolution was imminent had become obsolete … Engels demonstrated, as an expert in military science, that it was a pure illusion to believe that the workers could, in the existing state of military technique and of industry, and in view of the characteristics of the great towns of today, successfully bring about a revolution by street fighting. Rosa Luxemburg, 1918. Introduction to the 1895 Edition, Engels With the exception of only a few chapters, every important part of the revolutionary annals from 1848 to 1849 bear the heading: Defeat of the revolution! What succumbed in these defeats was not the revolution. It was the pre- revolutionary traditional appendages, results of social relationships which had not yet come to the point of sharp class antagonisms persons, illusions, conceptions, projects from which the revolutionary party before the February Revolution was not free, from which it could be freed not by the victory of February, but only by a series of defeats.

  • Cerebrum Erupts
Now rebooted and re-released, with Brain Salad Surgery, Emerson Lake & Palmer served up a unique blend of thinking man's rock that swept the globe. Here's how it all came together... Words: Mike Barnes rain Salad Surgery is the group at the pinnacle of its powers,” says drummer Carl Palmer of Emerson Lake & Palmer’s fifth album. “It’s very well recorded and it was definitely one of our most creative periods. If I had to choose one of our albums, that would be the one.” It’s a viewpoint echoed by his erstwhile bandmates. Keyboard player Keith Emerson sees it as a “step forward from the past”, which “represented the camaraderie of the band at the time”. Bass player and vocalist Greg Lake reckons that it was “the last original, unique ELP album”. The album was released in late 1973, by which time the group were, in Lake's words, “already huge”. One of the first so-called supergroups, formed from members of The Nice, King Crimson and Atomic Rooster, Emerson Lake & Palmer’s rapid rise to fame swept aside the old notion of ‘paying your dues’. Although all three musicians had endured times of schlepping up and down motorways in a transit van, the newly formed trio’s first gig was at the Plymouth Guildhall, followed by a second at the 197o Isle Of Wight Festival. From then on, superficially at least, it all seemed so easy. “It looked to Benchmark: the trio some like we were the sons of famous take a break while they fathers and didn’t have to work to get ran, London 1974.
