From the Editor

Welcome readers to the second quarter of Airflow. Since the last edition there has been great feedback regarding the article on the building of the “Red Zephyrs” with some readers making contact with various groups and progressing further with the art of scratch building from plans. It is great to see a resurgence in Old Timer Electric happening across the state. There are quite a few sources to obtain plans from: starcadplans.net, outerzone.co.uk, SAM (So- ciety of Antique Modellers), Boundy39.com and for those into foamies try parkjets.com or www. shkhighhobby.com. These are only a few that I had been told about. I am sure that there are plenty more if you wanted to search for them.

The down side is that building from plans is very time consuming and more expensive as opposed to almost ready to fly (ARF) but the list of benefits of scratch building will take up all of this page, but some are : pride in construction of a scratch built model, individual type models, not one is the same, gaining an understanding on structure, balsa hardness & selection to make a model that is light yet strong and gain experience in repairing broken models when a crash happens. I have known modellers who have retrieved smashed models from the bin and have faithfully re- built them, and others would buy an arf and completely strip the covering and start again. I would like to thank Malcolm Campbell for the Freeflight report at Narrandera this year, Mike Colston for the update on the National Electric Flight Rally held recently at Cootamundra in NSW. Bob Wigmore for his comprehensive history of modelling in the North, Bruce deChastel for the pylon racing from Japan, and John Bray for his contribution in the restoration of the Avian- great work.

TAA JET & WARBIRD EVENT MAY 18-19TH SUCCESS Hi to all involved with the event, the weather was against us and Sundays conditions were atrocious. Even with all the difficulties I am very pleased with the results. We will be donating $5000 to the charity which is excellent given the circumstances. I could not have achieved this without you all and I have special thanks to the following people- Veronika sold nearly 700 tickets which is no surprise. Mark Williamson for his constant assistance especially doing the jobs that were not expected. Steve Jones for the catering and the crew of volunteers. Ben Whitby for the fences and assistance over the 4 days and before the event Bart, Chilli, Peter Love, Peter Lambert and Steve Thomas for the preparation of the grounds and setting up. Robbo for the amazing donation of all the kits as well as his constant assistance and support for this event. Tammy Wilson from the hospital foundation made my life much easier with promotion and organising the event. And to you all for participating and making the event a specular show. A special mention should be made to Sean Chilcott(Chilli) for his sacrificing his model on Saturday for the safety of the crowd. Amazing stuff really and you all did an awesome job over the weekend. My sincerest thanks go out to you all and I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone. As a group we have raised over $9000 for 2013 and $29000 over the last 8 years. We look towards the future now and I hope to catch up with you all soon. Thanks.

AIRFLOW 5 ROBERT (Bob) WIGMORE TRACS AUS9832 1934 -

In his own words:

I am an old time modeller having started flying models at the age of 9. Since I was small, aero planes took my attention. When post WW2 balsa became available, I built some kits learning what works and what doesn’t. At that stage all flying was free flight with control line if one had enough cash for engines. During the next 10 years in England I flew with the Southern CrossAero Club. It was an excellent place to learn about planes and I built everything from indoor models to free flight power duration types. I spent two years in the RAF for my national service and then migrated to in 1958. During a subsequent holiday in the , I purchased a Keil-Kraft single channel “Grasshopper set” and when returning to Australia I joined TRACS. This was in 1972, just two years after the club’s formation. I have been a member ever since – these 41 years have been full of designing, building, flying, teaching, competing, administrating and enjoyment. It has been a significant part of my life. The single channel Kiel-Kraft unit brought back from England was always inadequate for what I wanted to do but money was also inadequate. Eventually in 1973, I bought a second hand Kraft “5 Channel set” and built an RCM trainer powered by an OS 30 motor with teaching from Henry Johnson AUS7668 {“Henry Eagle” as we all know him} and Peter Foxton. By this time I had gained some skills and established my particular liking for scale, but I would have a go at anything. The building part of scale was particularly challenging as I decided to do it from the full size drawings and make my own plans. My first efforts to build for RC were not very successful - Number 1 being a Travelair 5000 which did not fly. I learned a great deal from this. The biggest lesson was – “Don’t change wing incidences” without knowing why it was like that in the first place! Here are three of my scratch built scale planes - Stearman, Fokker and Mew Gull. My Stearman PT17: I won a PT 17 Sterling kit at a competition in the early 70’s. It was very nice to fly but had a number of weaknesses. My yellow Stearman in the picture is based on the Sterling outline which is very accurate but with my structure. This model was scratch built from the three view drawings supplied with the plans which came with the Sterling kit that I had won. It is finished to represent the PT17 hanging up at Duxford UK in the US Air Force hanger. There are many color schemes but that one was readily available to photograph. Mine is 1845mm (5ft 11.5inch) span and 1420mm (4ft 8inch) long and the structure mainly balsa. There are a few variations on this particular aircraft which include the mag wheels and the instructions on the fuselage.

AIRFLOW 6 The covering is bem silk doped and painted with auto acrylic and markings which are hand painted. The dummy motor is built of individual cylinders and heads and the exhaust collector ring was selected from Woolies plastic bowls – a place which I often use for cowls and the like. Power is an OS 120 which at about 5000RPM sounds about right and gives it a very credible airspeed. A few more RPM and all the justifiable aerobatics are available. This is a model that has very few bad habits and as long as landing skills are reasonable it will last a long time. There are a couple of things to remember when setting up this sort of model. Firstly, put some differential into the ailerons (more up than down) and secondly a little down thrust will help to overcome the tendency to climb under power and dive on low power. Learn to use the rudder on turns or put in a mix. This size PT17 is available as an ARF but it ain’t like mine! My Fokker E III series of planes: This was a long time scale project which consisted of three models, once again built from full size drawings and photos. The two smaller models were 7 ft span (4.13 to 1) and the final one was ¼ scale. They were built for competition and therefore control was warp and full flying stab and fin. I have seen models with ailerons and elevators. Establishing wing sections and incidences was a matter of research. I learned a number of things with these models. The radial cowling is open at the bottom but an upright motor will over heat and the wire bracing I used destroys 36 MHz signals. The first model was powered by an OS 60 FSR but prop diameter was a problem so an upgrade to 120 four stroke was the answer. I had some success with the Fokkers first at the Queensland Championships with a first in mammoth scale and then a third at the Nationals at Bundaberg. I am in the process of refurbishing the larger model which is still in good structural order.

AIRFLOW 7 My Percival Mew Gull: This was scratch built and represented the only one still existing at the Shuttleworth Museum in the UK. The model was ¼ scale and very quick for a standard 120 four stroke engine. The most difficult part for construction was the under carriage which is very tightly cowled. The picture shows the model in its first flight without the undercarriage cowls.

AIRFLOW 9 2013 ARMIDALE SAILPLANE COMPETITION

F3J flew 9 rounds of heats with 7 pilots to a heat during the Friday. Very testing conditions with strong winds and a few instances of light rain. After the heats they flew 3 Fly-off rounds commencing around 4:30pm. Conditions proved testing for the 7 pilots who made the fly-offs. At the end of the fly-offs only 1 pilot had made his flight times in all the rounds. The results were: 1. Carl Strautins 2. Jim Houdalakis 3. Karl Knack

Open Thermal got underway on Saturday morning after the electric guys decided to see if the weather would improve. They had just completed the first heat of round 7 when rain stopped flying around 3pm. Winds were again strong for most of the day and F3B planes were used by many competitors with most loaded to around 3kg. On Sunday morning the rain and wind had set in and the forecast predicted 40-80mm of rain with winds of 20 - 40 kmph increasing to 60 - 80 kmph in the afternoon. The forecast for Monday was even worse so it was decided to call the event and declare the results based on the 6 rounds already flown on the Saturday. The final results were

1. Carl Strautins 2. Clive Warman 3. Alan Mayhew

Congratulations to the winners.

The broken one was on launch.

AIRFLOW 10 AIRFLOW 11 Restored to its former glory- An Avro Avian built from Airborne Plans about 25 years ago. It was built by Brisbane modeller, Des Mckellar, and was flown by him in the Nationals at Bundaberg in 1993 and was often flown by Ron Cavanagh. Des sold it to Fred Manning (a Beaufighter pilot in WW2) Fred passed away a couple of years ago and it passed to Per Andresen. It was in storage in the corner of Per’s boat building shed for some time and was covered in dust etc. Per gave it to me, after about 3 months of TLC I have returned it to the condition in the pictures (that is me putting it together in the pics) It flew very well to complete its heavy model inspection, it is powered by a Saito 21cc 4 stroke petrol motor. I hope this is of interest to you as it must be one of the older models of one of your plans. I bought a set of new plans from you which was a great help in the restoration. John Bray

AIRFLOW 12 Japan Q40 race report from Japan. Cold, wet and windy, but still one of the best races we have attended for a long time. Bruce deChastel, Steve Taylor and Mark Giggins form Australia along with Roy Andrassy from attended the Annual Q40 race in Iga city Japan, just north of Osaka. Entry list of 23 pilots flew 10 rounds in the challenging conditions and in the end allowed only 1 Japanese pilot in the top 5 spots. A superb effort from Roy with his Supercat gave him a good win over Steve Taylor in Second also flying a Supercat. Bruce in 3rd only 1 second ahead of Host Kozo Ooi in 4th. Bruce raced both his GR7 and new AR6 but struggled with back pain, Kozo in 4th and Mark in 5th both flew Loki’s. Nelson in 1st, New DKT Thor in 2nd, DKT in 3rd, then Nelsons again in 4th and 5th. All came down to flying and calling in the end. Roy got in early in the week but had issues with missing baggage, Steve and Bruce both managed only 1 flight each before the race to set up and tune ( thanks to the severe wind on the Friday ). BUT !!!!!!!! The most important thing...... Great people, great organization, great food and abundant liquid refreshments . Worth the trip even if you leave the planes behind.

Hope next year we can get a few more over Transmitter Wanted to experience the fabulous event with us, Hi, I’m after a transmitter and I live in New pretty sure Steve is already planning his trip again. AIRFLOW 19 2013 NATIONAL ELECTRIC FLIGHT RALLY The National Electric Flight Rally (NEFR) was held over the Easter Weekend at the state field at Cootamundra recently. Most people arrived on Thursday, with a number of us camping at the field. Interest- ingly the tough campers were all old timers! The weather was unpleasant on the Thurs- day, wet and windy, and it did not bode well for the weekend, although the forecast prom- ised better things. As it turned out the weath- er was close to perfect all weekend with clear skies and light winds most of the time. The breeze generally strengthened in the after- noon making it hard work for the old timers but it was never enough to stop us flying.

Mike Colston with his 1/2a old timer Peter Henderson did a magnificent job as CD for the total of five EOT events that were held over the weekend. The events were run in a number of time slots which were at different times of day through the weekend testing pi- lots with conditions ranging from the still cold (no lift) mornings to the breezy afternoon slots. The events run were 1/2A Texaco, Tex- aco, Duration, Height Limited Old Timer and Nostalgia. There were seven to nine entrants in each of the first four events with just four in the new Nostalgia class. 1/2A Texaco and Texaco saw all contestants completing three perfect rounds so that the fourth round was run as a fly-off in each event in which everyone launched at the same time and the last one down won. After hard fought battles the place getters in these events were as follows:- *1/2A Texaco - 1st Place- Bob Wilson; 2nd Place- Allen Mayhew; and Peter Henderson with his Nostalgia model 3rd Place- Gary Ryan. *Texaco - 1st Place- Mal Pring; 2nd Place- Bob Wilson; and 3rd Place- Bob Hickman. Duration and HLOT proved harder events and at the end of three heats only two con- testants in each qualified for a fly-off with the other contestants competing for third place. In duration Gary Andrews skill and powerful model eventually overcame Allen Mayhew to take first place whilst in HLOT my own large Lanzo Airborn found the conditions just good enough to beat Rob Watson who, amazingly, was flying in his first EOT Competition, we will have to watch him in the future. The final placings in these events were as follows:- *Duration - 1st Place- Gary Andrews; 2nd Place- Allen Mayhew; and 3rd Place- Mike Colston. *HLOT- 1st Place- Mike Colston; Rob Watson with his Bomber AIRFLOW 20 2nd Place- Rob Watson; and 3rd Place- Mal Pring. Introducing Tahn Stowe - MAAA Vice President

I have been involved in building and flying model aeroplanes since the age of 7, and have proudly held my FAI licence (AUS 3184) for more Tahn 50 years. As a competition aeromodeller, I have competed in events, organised events and officiated in events, both nationally and internationally.

Over the last 35 years I have been the President, Vice President, Delegate, Secretary and am currently the Treasurer, of the NSW Free Flight Society Inc.

During that period I have participated in more Tahn 15 MAAA Tahn Stowe – MAAA Vice Council Conferences and was one of the original proponents of the President MAAA Field Purchase Bureau.

After living in the Blue Mountains for 33 years my wife and I have Executive Members “downsized” and moved into a small apartment at Coogee Beach. Producing my scratch built 1/8th scale Free Flight Hawker Hurricane has proved a challenge without a workshop, however it will be flying at the Richmond Free Flight Scale Rally in July.

Strongly held beliefs I believe the MAAA as the peak body, has an important role to play in the propagation, education and practice of model aeronautics as being a socially beneficial pursuit.

I have always believed that the MAAA should maintain strong links with ASAC and through them the FAI. The fact that the current MAAA Secretary is also on the executive of CIAM is evidence of our Kevin Dodd – MAAA Secretary high standing within the international sports aviation community. 16 Illidge Road Victoria Point

QLD 4165 Having pushed for the formation of the Field Purchase Bureau and Telephone 07 3207 9067 supported its funding over many years I am pleased to see that several States and individual clubs have been assisted with

purchasing and developing flying fields. Without this system, less populous states could never dream of owning a State Field. The future of model flying in Australia and elsewhere in the world is

under threat. Owning your own flying field is arguably the best defence.

Lastly, I believe that the MAAA has a responsibility to its affiliate members, past and present, to preserve and exhibit its history; to

honour its Champions and tireless volunteers; and to promote the many faceted hobby and sport that is model aviation. Brian Dowie – MAAA Treasurer

Incident Reports Propeller Strikes

Incident Reports continue to indicate a rise in serious injuries caused by propeller strikes to fingers, arms and legs from models with electric motors and propellers. These reports show that modellers can be ‘caught out’ by

electric powered models in ways that would not have been imagined with IC powered models.

All modellers operating any electric powered model are reminded to treat these models as ‘live’ until the batteries have been physically disconnected or

disarmed. The following page shows a suggested ‘Safety Tag System’ (courtesy of MASA) which can be easily adapted to any electric powered model and provides a visual indication that the electric system is not armed

and is safe to be handled.

Safety wire in helicopter rotor blades

Following a request from a State Association, the MAAA Executive investigated the situation regarding the wire from a helicopter blade exiting during operation. A member of the Helicopter Subcommittee provided the following information. ‘Although the consequence of this happening is high, the probability is very small. The risk is very small’.

It was suggested that responsible field management and regular maintenance would reduce the risk to a minimum. It is understood that the manufacturer of the rotor blades is aware of the problem and has initiated

steps to rectify the problem.

Giant Catalina Test Flight

On Wednesday 29 May 2013 two successful test flights were carried out on this 126kg Catalina. In 20-25kts gusty wind conditions, Steve Thomas (below centre), assisted by MAAA Giant Model Inspectors , Peter Love (left) and Paul Gordon -Brander (right), completed what has been a 3000 hour project. Steve commented after completing a fau ltless landing : “20 to 25 knot cross wind, a little hairy on landing but all good”.

Congratulations to all involved in the project.
