Accepted 22 May, 2012 Ruta graveolens is known as Rue. R. graveolens extracts and essential oil are important areas in drug development with numerous pharmacological activities in many countries. For a long time R. graveolens has been used in traditional medicines for the relief of pain, eye problems, rheumatism and dermatitis. R. graveolens has recently been shown to have antibacterial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and insecticidal activities. Rutin, quercetin, psoralen, methoxypsoralen, rutacridone, rutacridone epoxide and gravacridondiol are phytochemical compounds which are reported from this plant. α-Pinene, limonene and 1,8-cineole were identified as the main monoterpene constituents for R. graveolens essential oil. Due to the easy collection of the plant and being widespread and also remarkable biological activities, this plant has become medicine in many countries especially in Mediterranean region. This article presents comprehensive analyzed information on the botanical, chemical and pharmacological aspects of R. graveolens. Key words: Ruta graveolens, Rutaceae, pharmacology, phytochemistry. At the concentrations needed for this effect, it can cause the death of a pregnant woman. R. graveolens is rich in rutin which act as a venotonic and capillary protector. Rutin helps increase visual sharpness and benefits other visual problems, and it was used against edema, thrombo- genesis, inflammation, spasms, and hypertension (Miguel, 2003). The essential oil is spasmolytic, anti- inflammatory and antihistaminic and is a vermifuge (Mansour et al. 1989). R. graveolens can also be used as a rubefacient, applied in poultices for rheumatic pain, dislocations, tendon strains, varicose veins and skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. It has bitter eupeptic properties, so it is prescribed for stomach and intestinal disorders. If externally spread on moist skin Figure 1. The essential oil also has a depressing effect on the central nervous system. At high doses it works as a narcotic poison, provoking violent intestinal inflammation, tongue and larynx tumefaction, excitement, followed by fatigue, vertigo, mental confusion, trembling, nephritis with uterine swelling and abortion, liver damage, intestine damage, and eventually death (Miguel, 2003). A number of chemical constituents such as alkaloids, coumarins, volatile substances, terpenoids, flavonoids and furoquinolines have been isolated from different parts of the plant (kuzovkina et al., 2004). From current pharmaceutical studies, additional pharmaceutical applications of R. graveolens have revealed antioxidant, anti-inflammatory (Ratheesh and Helen, 2007), antidiabetic (Toserkani et al., 2011), Figure 2. R. graveolens leaves. antibacterial, antifungal (Meepagala et al., 2005), antiandrogenic(Khouri and El-Akawi, 2005), insecticide (Barbosa et al., 2011), effects among others. Since review and systemic analysis of chemistry, pharmacology and clinical properties of R. graveolens have not been reported, we prompted to provide the currently available information on traditional and local knowledge, ethno biological and ethno medicinal issues, identification of pharmacologically important molecules and pharmacological studies on this useful plant. The aim of this article is to introduce R. graveolens as a potent medicinal plant by highlighting its traditional applications as well as the recent findings for novel pharmacological and clinical applications. An experiment was conducted in this regard to assess the impact of farmyard manure (FYM), composted sugarcane pressmud (CPM) and sewage sludge biosolid (SSB) on volatile oil composition of Ruta graveolens L., an important aromatic medicinal herb used frequently in Unani system of medicine in India. Volatile oil in the aerial parts of the plant was isolated by hydro-distillation and analyzed by GC-MS. Hydro-distillation of untreated (control) plants yielded 0.32% essential oil on fresh weight basis. The predominant components in the essential oil were n-Hex-4-en-3-one (55.06%), n-Pent-3-one (28.17%), n-Hex-3-en-2-one (14.07%) and n-Hex-5-en-3-one (0.67%). Essential oil obtained from plants treated with FYM amounted to 0.36% of fresh weight and consisted mainly of n-Hex-4-en-3-one (53.64%), n-Pent-3-one (37.82%) and n-Hex-3-en-2-one (7.22%).

Since dental caries is one of the most common oral diseases and is considered a major public health problem, the present study evaluated in vitro antimicrobial potential of methanol extracts of Ruta chalepensis against the major etiologic agent of dental caries, Streptococcus mutans. The antimicrobial effect of R. chalepensis was evaluated in liquid medium by the dimethylthiazol-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) reduction colorimetric assay and in solid medium by the determination of colony forming units (CFU). We found that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 250 μg/mL (p <0.05) in liquid medium and 3.9 μg/mL (p <0.05) in solid medium.     Zurich Open Repository and Archive University of Zurich Main Library Strickhofstrasse 39 CH-8057 Zurich www.zora.uzh.ch Year: 2006 First steps towards a floral structural characterization of the major rosid subclades Endress, P K ; Matthews, M L Abstract: A survey of our own comparative studies on several larger clades of rosids and over 1400 original publications on rosid flowers shows that floral structural features support to various degrees the supraordinal relationships in rosids proposed by molecular phylogenetic studies. However, as many apparent relationships are not yet well resolved, the structural support also remains tentative. Some of the features that turned out to be of interest in the present study had not previously been considered in earlier supraordinal studies. The strongest floral structural support is for malvids (Brassicales, Malvales, Sapindales), which reflects the strong support of phylogenetic analyses. Somewhat less structurally supported are the COM (Celastrales, Oxalidales, Malpighiales) and the nitrogen-fixing (Cucurbitales, Fagales, Fabales, Rosales) clades of fabids, which are both also only weakly supported in phylogenetic analyses. The sister pairs, Cucurbitales plus Fagales, and Malvales plus Sapindales, are structurally only weakly supported, and for the entire fabids there is no clear support by the present floral structural data. However, an additional grouping, the COM clade plus malvids, shares some interesting features but does not appear as a clade in phylogenetic analyses. Thus it appears that the deepest split within eurosids- that between fabids and malvids - in molecular phylogenetic analyses (however weakly supported) is not matched by the present structural data. Features of ovules including thickness of integuments, thickness of nucellus, and degree of ovular curvature, appear to be especially interesting for higher level relationships and should be further explored.
