Geophysical Fictions Traversing the Works of Tim Winton and Cormac Mccarthy University of Southampton Faculty of Humanities English Geophysical Fictions Traversing the works of Tim Winton and Cormac McCarthy By Joel Found Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2016 i Abstract This thesis responds to Ocean Studies’ dissatisfaction with how literary geography is read metaphorically. Positioned in relation to geocritical, geopoetic and ecocritical endeavours, the present study brings this concern back to land, and builds a method of reading literary geographies that treads a patient and geophysically informed path to comprehending their metaphorical value. To achieve this, the thesis proposes reading literary geographies as forms of heterotopia: fictional and inaccessible, yet tethered to real-world geography and its geophysical dynamics. To realise the potential of this proposal, the core of the thesis is a comparative reading of Tim Winton and Cormac McCarthy, two writers praised for their attention to place. Prompted by geophysical, environmental, anthropological, historical and philosophical ways of understanding geography, the thesis traverses the rivers, paths, deserts, and cities that emerge in Winton and McCarthy’s fiction. Reading these spaces geophysically reveals connections between the two writers that have not yet been enabled by transpacific or transnational frames, appreciating the host of materialities beyond the Pacific that connect them and their thinking. Studying the presence of the fluvial cycle, lines, dust, and concrete in these locations prompts a diversity of metaphorical, symbolic, and literal ways of reading that develop ideas of national identity, gender, community, and crisis within their fiction. Comparing both writers geographically enables a communication that expands our understanding of their individual literary works, oeuvres, and networks. Sylvia Plath, ‘Berck-Plage’1 Literary criticism has long tended to promote a metaphorical focus on literary landscapes. The moors of Wuthering Heights, Thoreau’s Walden Pond, and Wordsworth’s Lake District are seen as literary images: objects apparently too abstracted through intellectual and emotional reflection to require sustained geographical attention. The attraction to this approach is evident in W. H. Auden’s rousing The Enchafèd Flood (1950), in which the poet and critic aims to ‘understand the nature of Romanticism through an examination of its treatment of a single theme, the sea.’ 2 Auden treats the sea as a trope, painting its metaphorical moods and perceiving it primarily as ‘that state of barbaric vagueness and disorder out of which civilisation has emerged and into which, unless saved by the effort of gods and men, it is always liable to relapse.’3 Hester Blum criticises such approaches, claiming: ‘The sea is not a metaphor, figurative language has its place in analyses of the maritime world, certainly, but oceanic studies could be more invested in the uses, and problems, of what is literal in the face of the sea’s abyss of representation.’4 Perhaps Blum would think Auden more accurate had he considered the theme of Romanticism through the nature of the ocean. One of the most prominent causes for such reassessment was the growing dissatisfaction with nationally exceptionalist modes of thinking that attempted to herd literary influence within national borders. Much of the work that responded to this problem emerged from the field of transatlanticism. Studies like Robert Weisbuch’s Atlantic Double- Cross (1986) shift our attention away from the clear national boundaries of the land towards the sea in an attempt to discover how American literature had been influenced by its European ancestors and counterparts. This transatlantic turn was developed by critics like Paul Giles, whose study Transatlantic Insurrections (2001) acknowledges a more mutual trade of influence between the two continents, and more recently by critics such as Wai Chee Dimock, whose Shades of the Planet (2007) explores literature in a broader ‘transnational’ and global frame. The transnational turn has not yet supplanted a transoceanic method, with some scholars cautious of moving from an overly rigid national view of cultural influence to one which risks embracing reductive clichés about global culture in a move Graham Huggan pointedly calls ‘globaloney.’5 This scepticism has strengthened the diversity of transoceanic studies, with a transpacific frame becoming increasingly popular. In his 2011 survey of the field, Steven G. Yao notes that this geographical frame has been under construction for nearly as long as the transatlantic, but has focused mainly on East Asian and American interactions. 6 Recently, there has been a surge of interest in mutual Australian and American cultural influences. In their 2010 edited collection Reading Across the Pacific, Robert Dixon and Nicholas Birns complained that ‘The United States–Australian cultural relationship has often simply been assumed rather than theorised or empirically grounded’, responding by examining ‘the concrete interaction between the two nations.’7 Paul Giles’ extensive Antipodean America (2014) 5 Graham Huggan, Australian Literature: Postcolonialism, Racism, Transnationalism (Oxford: OUP, 2007), p. 10. 6 Steven G.     Suitability of remote sensing for Coastal Monitoring Proposed Project: Strategic coastal monitoring is essential in determining the long-term trends and changes in beach volume and morphology. However, restricted funding means that along low-risk coastlines, the frequencies of surveys are not high enough to directly link beach change to dynamic hydrodynamic conditions. Remote sensing technologies, including Lidar and satellite data products, are often suggested as alternative sources of data. The use of these technologies may allow higher temporal frequency, albeit at a lower spatial resolution. However, a systematic assessment of the data is required to determine its suitability. Aim: To assess whether remote sensing data are of sufficient resolution to allow calculation of beach volume or morphology to sufficient certainty that they be used in conjunction with CCO monitoring data to allow higher temporal resolution beach volume calculations. It is Australia imagined large and sprawling, but also in ordinary, intimate detail from a particular dot on the map: working class Perth, Western Australia, from the 1940s to the 1960s. Humorously, lyrically and poignantly, the novel probes questions of where and how to belong. Always already transient and haunted, belonging is a precious but fragile dream, in the midst of family, friends and neighbours. As the Pickles family move into the big, trembling house at number one Cloud Street, It's just them in this vast indoors . there's a war on and people are coming home with bits of them removed . women are walking buggered and beatenlooking with infants in the parks . [the Pickles] have no money and this great continent of a house doesn't belong to them. They're lost. (Winton p. 51) The novel is, of course, only one person's re-imagining of place and time, and for some critics there are omissions, blindnesses and flaws in this vision. However, the fact remains that Author Cloudstreet is a phenomenon; an astoundingly popular novel, made into a television Tim Winton mini-series, adapted to stage, and in 2012 voted the most popular Australian novel by viewers of the ABC's First Tuesday Book Club.

    Tim Winton’s Dirt Music: Sounding Country/Re-Siting Place STEPHEN HARRIS University of New England Noise is sound out of place as dirt is matter in the wrong place. (Adam Mars-Jones) We hear white noise as one sound; however, by further processing we create new sounds. But the importance of comparing white noise to traditional musical sounds is the realisation that through white noise we reach sounds inaudible to the human ear—part of which I intuitively call the ‘river of sound’. (Toru Takemitsu, quoted in Toop 147). In Tim Winton’s novel, Breath (2008), the narrator, Bruce Pike, gives voice to an idea Winton places at the centre of his earlier novel, Dirt Music: ‘I’ll talk if no one’s listening. It’s like blowing the didjeridu, cycling air through and through, doing little more than explaining yourself to your self while you’re still sane enough to do it’ (21). Having been kinked out of psychological alignment through youthful explorations of extreme states, Pike tells his story for the purpose of explanation, not exculpation—as he insists above, ‘blowing the didj’ is a form of recuperative self-communion equated with talking to one’s self. He has perhaps discovered nothing more than the fact that playing the instrument affords a rudimentary therapeutic function. In narrative terms, the reference to ‘blowing’ the didjeridu appears to carry little dramatic or symbolic weight. Yet, when it is revealed that he has learnt ‘to sustain the circular breathing necessary to keep up the low, growling drone you could send down the valley…’—‘I liked the way it sucked energy from me and drew hard feelings up the way only a good tantrum could when I was little…I blow until it burns…and the wind goes through me in cycles, hot and droning and defiant’ (152/9)—the act of ‘sounding’ the drone assumes a richer allusive resonance.

Predicted losses of 32 to 50% of current mudflat area with 50 to 90% conversion of salt ponds to tidal marsh in the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project could impact migratory shorebirds. Our goal was to evaluate communities of benthic invertebrates and shorebirds on the Alviso mudflat prior to breaching Pond A6 to serve as the baseline for future assessments of potential impacts. We sampled benthic cores at 36 locations in 3 regions of the Alviso shoals monthly from June to November 2010 to classify pre-restoration characteristics of invertebrate densities by region, distance from shore, and month.

I'm not going to wheel out a theoretical approach through which to interpret the text, as if the reading I could produce by that means were somehow more authoritative than any other. Instead, what I will do is situate Winton's career and this particular novel in what can be called the field of Australian literature. In using this term field, I mean to indicate the whole system involved in the production and reception of Australian literature. This is now a very broad spectrum of institutions, personnel, practices and values that is surprisingly complex and diverse. It is now so extensive that it isn't even confined to Australia. And academic literary criticism — in the sense of theoretically-driven textual analysis — is only one part of that field. Many would say that it's not even the most important part. This idea of a “field” derives from the work of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu.1 Much of Bourdieu's work was done on French art culture of the nineteenth century, but it has been widely used in recent years as a tool for thinking about how other culture industries work, including print culture, cinema and music.

    Tide 1 Tide The Bay of Fundy at Hall's Harbour, The Bay of Fundy at Hall's Harbour, Nova Scotia during high tide Nova Scotia during low tide Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the Sun and the rotation of the Earth. Most places in the ocean usually experience two high tides and two low tides each day (semidiurnal tide), but some locations experience only one high and one low tide each day (diurnal tide). The times and amplitude of the tides at the coast are influenced by the alignment of the Sun and Moon, by the pattern of tides in the deep ocean (see figure 4) and by the shape of the coastline and near-shore bathymetry.[1] [2] [3] Most coastal areas experience two high and two low tides per day. The gravitational effect of the Moon on the surface of the Earth is the same when it is directly overhead as when it is directly underfoot. The Moon orbits the Earth in the same direction the Earth rotates on its axis, so it takes slightly more than a day—about 24 hours and 50 minutes—for the Moon to return to the same location in the sky. During this time, it has passed overhead once and underfoot once, so in many places the period of strongest tidal forcing is 12 hours and 25 minutes. The high tides do not necessarily occur when the Moon is overhead or underfoot, but the period of the forcing still determines the time between high tides.

Abstract Lahars and other mass flows are highly hazardous phenomena that can pose great risk to areas in their path. Due to their often unpredictable onsets, scientific observations are limited. In addition, the erosive capabilities of a lahar mean that the most com- monly used monitoring and sampling methods, such as load cells and bedload traps, are often damaged early in the flow. The cost of repair and maintenance of these instru- mentation prohibits comprehensive coverage of each channel that might be at risk from lahars. The development of seismic sensors as an alternative monitoring method could prove effective as they do not require contact with a flow and are therefore less at risk from damage.
