COPYRIGHT x892 Bv WILLIAM NELSON The Passaic Falls are the most remarkable bit of natural scenery in New Jersey. In some respects they are unique. For more than two centuries they have been visited by travelers from all parts of the world. Their peculiar formation, and the strange rocks in the neighborhood, have excited the wonder and curiosity of all beholders, and have of ten suggested the thought, "How was this cataract formed? Why these peculiar 1·ocks and mountains?" In preparing a History of the City of Paterson-a city which was located at the Great Falls to take advantage of the water-power-the writer's attention was naturally di rected to the question which has arisen in the minds of all who have stood at the spot where the Passaic river takes its mad plunge over the precipice. In the following pages he has attempted an answer, by giving some account of the Geological History of the Passaic Falls. This paper is the first Chapter of the more extended History of Paterson mentioned. Only one hundred copies have been printed separately in this form. The writer will be pleased to receive suggestions and corrections from any who may receive a copy of this pamphlet. The references and notes have been made full, as a guide to those unfamiliar with the subject, who may wish to pursue it further. PATERSON, N. J., November 24, 1892. -

S017 1BJ. 8 9 * Sally Brown ([email protected], Telephone: +44(0)2380 594796). 10 11 Abstract: Building defences, such as groynes, on eroding soft cliff coastlines alters the 12 sediment budget, changing the shoreline configuration adjacent to defences. On the 13 down-drift side, the coastline is set-back. This is often believed to be caused by increased 14 erosion via the ‘terminal groyne effect’, resulting in rapid land loss. This paper examines 15 whether the terminal groyne effect always occurs down-drift post defence construction 16 (i.e. whether or not the retreat rate increases down-drift) through case study analysis. 17 18 Nine cases were analysed at Holderness and Christchurch Bay, England. Seven out of 19 nine sites experienced an increase in down-drift retreat rates. For the two remaining sites, 20 retreat rates remained constant after construction, probably as a sediment deficit already 21 existed prior to construction or as sediment movement was restricted further down-drift. 22 For these two sites, a set-back still evolved, leading to the erroneous perception that a 23 terminal groyne effect had developed. Additionally, seven of the nine sites developed a 24 set back up-drift of the initial groyne, leading to the defended sections of coast acting as 1 25 a hard headland, inhabiting long-shore drift. -

Under evaluation is a distinct coastal boulder bed (CBB) derived from banded rhyolite with boulders arrayed in a partial-ring configuration against one side of the headland on Ensenada Almeja (Clam Bay) north of Loreto. Preconditions related to the thickness of rhyolite flows and vertical fissures that intersect the flows at right angles along with the specific gravity of banded rhyolite delimit the size, shape and weight of boulders in the Almeja CBB. Mathematical formulae are applied to calculate the wave height generated by storm surge impacting the headland. The average weight of the 25 largest boulders from a transect nearest the bedrock source amounts to 1200 kg but only 30% of the sample is estimated to exceed a full metric ton in weight. -

THE LIBERATION OF OSLO AND COPENHAGEN: A MIDSHIPMAN'S MEMOIR C.B. Koester Introduction I joined HMS Devonshire, a County-class cruiser in the Home Fleet, on 16 September 1944. For the next nine months we operated out of Scapa Flow, the naval base in the Orkneys north of Scotland which had been home to Jellicoe's Grand Fleet during World War I and harboured the main units of the Home Fleet throughout the second conflict. It was a bleak, uninviting collection of seventy-three islands—at low water—twenty-nine of them inhabited, mainly by fishermen and shepherds. Winters were generally miserable and the opportunities for recreation ashore limited. There was boat-pulling and sailing, weather permitting; an occasional game of field hockey on the naval sports ground; and perhaps a Saturday afternoon concert in the fleet canteen or a "tea dance" at the Wrennery. Otherwise, we entertained ourselves aboard: singsongs in the Gunroom; a Sunday night film in the Wardroom; deck hockey in the Dog Watches; and endless games of "liar's dice." Our operations at sea were more harrowing, but only marginally more exciting, consisting mainly of attacks on German shore installations on the Norwegian coast. We rarely saw the coastline, however, for the strikes were carried out by aircraft flying from the escort carriers in the task force. At the same time, we had to be prepared for whatever counterattack the Germans might mount, and until Tirpitz was finally disabled on 12 November 1944, such a riposte might have been severe. That and the ever-present threat of submarines notwithstanding, for most of us these operations involved a large measure of boredom and discomfort.
