A.C.T. 2012 Essential Pro-Life VOTING GUIDE Family Life International Australia In this election the minority Labor government of Katy Gallagher is seeking a 4th term in office for Labor – at a time when the party has been suffering defeats and bad opinion polls across the nation. The ACT (along with QLD and the NT) has a single (unicameral) house with 17 seats. At the 2008 election, Labor won 7 seats, the Liberals won 6 and the Greens won 4 seats and gained the balance of power – supporting Labor to form government. The Labor-Greens alliance has declared its goal of full marriage rights for homosexuals after passing a Civil Unions Bill in August 2012. Labor MP and Attorney General, Simon Corbell stated that he now wants to push on towards full marriage rights. Family Life International has identified a number of other anti-life pieces of legislation that have passed through the ACT Parliament during the terms of some of the current sitting members – the Cloning and Embryo Research Amendment 2007, the Homosexual Parentage Bill 2003 and the Abortion Bill 2001. An amendment to the Abortion Bill was put forward in 2005 that would recognise as a crime the harming of an unborn child in the event of an assault upon a pregnant woman. The anti-life Gallagher/Corbell duo still refused to recognise the protection of the unborn in any instance. There has been consistent opposition to these bills from the Liberal MPs Vicki Dunne and Brendan Smyth. The Opposition leader Zed Seselja also has a few runs on the board. -

That is because we also have to know the number of Members who are in other holding areas. So, we will allow a few more members to come in and then we can make the final confirmation. Order Members, it is now confirmed that we have the required quorum and, therefore, business will begin. COMMUNICATION FROM THE CHAIR CHANGES IN THE MAJORITY PARTY LEADERSHIP Hon. Members, Standing Order 19(1) provides leeway for the largest party or coalition of parties in the National Assembly to elect a Member of the party or coalition of parties to serve as the Leader of the Majority Party. Further, Standing Order 19(3) outlines the procedure for removal of a Leader of the Majority Party. In this regard, Hon. Members, and pursuant to the provision of Standing Order 19(4), I wish to inform the House that I have received a letter from the Majority Party Chief Whip communicating that the Jubilee Coalition held a Parliamentary Group meeting on June 22nd, 2020 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). The letter also conveys that, the Meeting, which comprised of Members of the Coalition in the National Assembly and chaired by the Party Leader, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces – (i) removed Hon. -

When the Barisan Nasional did very badly in the March 2008 general elections, all the component parties except those in Sabah and Sarawak experienced losses as they had never done before. 2. In the aftermath of the elections, the component parties pointed accusing fingers at each other. Very quickly they were at each other's throats. 3. There were talks about leaving the BN. And now we are seeing the first party to do so and to become an independent party. 4. Where before all parties avoided raising sensitive issues in public, now in the name of democracy and liberalism sensitive issues are brought up in which the component parties of the BN make known the differences in their view. The result is to widen the divide separating the BN component parties. 5. When Ahmad Ismail made unpalatable remarks about the Chinese, it was made out that it was the view of UMNO itself. Far from denying it, the UMNO leadership accepted the blame and apologised. This solved nothing as the Chinese parties refused to accept the apology but demanded the culprit himself should apologise. 6. He refused and UMNO whose president heads the Government suspended Ahmad for three years. This may satisfy some Chinese but almost immediately the Government arrested a Chinese MP under ISA. The effects of Ahmad's suspension have been nullified. 7. Now the Malays are angry with the Chinese and the Chinese are angry with the Malays. Party-wise UMNO is angry with Gerakan and MCA and Gerakan/MCA are angry with UMNO. -

Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister Hon Kris Faafoi Hon Stuart Nash Hon Grant Robertson Hon Simon Bridges Hon Paul Goldsmith Hon Todd McClay Parliament Building Wellington, 6160 16 April 2020 Dear Prime Minister, Government Ministers and Opposition Members of Parliament COVID-19 effect on small business leases – call for urgent action to be taken to prevent business closures We refer to our previous letter to each of you dated 2 April 2020. In our letter we wrote: a) calling for urgent action to be taken to prevent business closures; and b) we implored you to address the critical issue of rent relief to all tenants of commercial leases – as many leases do not provide any rent relief. We have had no response from government or the Ministry for Business, Innovation & Employment to our letter and our views do not appear to have been considered in the recent package that was announced yesterday to supposedly assist small to medium-sized businesses. We find this very disappointing. As we said in our letter, we are the peak body representing franchising in NZ. Turnover of the franchising sector represents circa 11% of New Zealand’s GDP. As such franchising is a critical part of the New Zealand economy. And most of the circa 37,000 franchisees in NZ are small businesses – the very people that the government has said need more government support. In our letter we explained to you why rent relief is critical and why we believe urgent action needs to be taken to put cash in the hands of small to medium-sized business owners. -

Chapter 3 – Civil Liberties Australia Expanding freedom from the centre outwards As faster transport and near-instant communications began to overcome the “tyranny of distance” of Australia in the late-20th century, civil liberties in general was not moving far, or fast. In the Australian Capital Territory, a civil liberties group operated for 30 years from 4 June 1969. But as power centralised in the federal parliament, civil liberties in Canberra was down to its last person standing. The Council of Civil Liberties of the ACT formally died at the end of 2001, when the Registrar of Incorporated Associations cancelled its incorporation because the group had not lodged annual returns for three years. When the authors became aware in mid-2001 of the probable de- registration, they sought advice from then- ACT Chief Justice Terry Higgins (photo, with CLA President Dr Kristine Klugman), and were directed to Laurie O’Sullivan, a retired barrister who had run the organisation for all but the last five years of its existence. He bitterly related the tale of the ACT CCL’s death (see ACT Chapter). A nation’s capital obviously should have an active civil liberties watchdog, so the authors decided to incorporate a new body. To ensure it began life free of past political baggage (see ACT chapter), the name chosen was Civil Liberties Australia (ACT) Inc. As CLA was being born in the latter half of 2001, western life and liberty was collapsing. No-one knew when two aircraft crashed into New York’s Twin Towers (on ‘9/ll', or 11 September 2001) by how much or for how long. -

Imagining the Solution Kia ora, talofa lava, gidday – welcome to the second edition of the Tauiwi TOAH-NNEST newsletter “Imagining the Solution” which focuses on primary prevention strategies, activities and programmes to help build communities free of sexual violence. This edition coincides with Rape Awareness Week in Aotearoa New Zealand, from 1 – 7 May. We also want to remind you about the Ministry of Justice funding for sexual violence prevention activities within Tauiwi and th Bicultural communities, closing on May 11 . Finally, a heads up: the Stocktake of Prevention Services for Taui wi and Bicultural communities will be out soon. This survey aims to get a clear picture of what prevention activities are happening now, and what kinds of resources we need to do our prevention work as well as possible. It’s the start of capacity building for our prevention sector. Please take the time to fill it in when it arrives. And get in touch with queries or sexual violence prevention activities to share.
